About this project
Outlaws and Dance Halls (Living History of Texas Music), is truly a living creation. Great music has always been about much more than an equation of notes and verses in an acceptable arrangement that is pleasing to the ear. This is especially true when you are referring to the folk, roots, and country music of the Lone Star State. It is about the emotion, the story, truly the mystical interaction between the music, singer, song and listener.
It is for this reason that Outlaws and Dance Halls absolutely must itself ,be a living thing and interactive experience. It must truly be an epic journey into the heart and soul of the music, as well as the listener. It is in the heart and soul where the magic takes place.
The journey begins very simply as a series of articles, interviews, and photo-essays published in a weekly online blog. Some weeks it will feature people and places, while other times it will examine a particular song or body of work by a particular songwriter or artist. At other times it will explore the magic of an era, and truly listen for a forgotten heartbeat. At all times we will solicit and use feedback from you, the fellow traveler, so that every turn in the road is guided by a collective soul of the people who truly love the music. The goal of this project is to travel through the emotion, the thought, time, and virtual experience as if we all somehow shared the same heartbeat. In a sense, we do.
On a quarterly basis, the best of the weekly stories, along with new features will be published as an e-book, so that you will be able to more readily access past experiences shared with us on the road.
One of the most exciting aspects of Outlaws and Dance Halls is the method we have chosen to promote it. While our initial funding must begin here with your generous support which will enable the first miles on the road; our ongoing support to enable us to expand the goal and vision will come through a series of music events. These events will all be in the spirit of discovering and reviving the musical roots. For example, a cowboy campfire acoustic session under the stars; a song swap session with a stage full of singer/songwriters influenced by the outlaw movement; an authentic old roots dance in a hill country German dance hall; a full blown Western Swing boot scootin' in one of the old surviving honkytonks; a songwriter showcase, open to all folk, country, and roots styles. As you can see, the creative possibilities are endless. How much better can it be than to celebrate and pay homage to such a great part of our heritage and culture, while at the same time helping to keep it growing and prospering through creative opportunities?
Consider yourself invited to travel with us, where few have had the privilege of going. Its going to be an amazing ride!
Risks and challenges
Challenges that we face in this project mostly lie further down the road as we endeavor to achieve higher and higher planes of goal achievement. Since we are beginning in a simple and low expense format, then our risks and challenges are minimal up through and including publication of the e-book. As you see though, our goals, hopes, and dreams for this project are much greater.
Once we take our promotional tour on the road, then things get much more interesting and challenges become a constant companion. It is at this point where issues such as booking acts, venue selection/procurement, sound, lighting, permits, insurance, ticket sales, media promotion, etc. become constant companions. It is our plan to kick off the promotional phase with small events, and events which involve less complicated logistics and minimal expense. gradually stepping up the level as we are able to create a cooperative effort, and keep excitement and momentum alive. Any additional support we receive from our backers beyond our minimum required, will no doubt expedite greater and earlier high level promotion. All of our promotional events will be designed in such a way that venues and performers will share greatly in the exposure, economic reward, and promotional benefit. This will be a key factor in higher level promotion at a greatly reduced cost.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
