The Quick Stop™ Bike Lock: A Faster Way To Get Around  

Traditional bike locks are heavy, bulky, get in your way, need a post for attachment and can be easily broken.  It only takes seconds.  I wanted a something to augment those locks to make my bike even more secure.  What I got was an added layer of security that also provided me with a good level of protection for quick stops when I didn't have my U-Lock.

Quick Stop was designed to fit the modern lifestyle—installed onto your bike, lightweight, and app-connected. As opposed to weighing you down, it’s fixed right to your steering tube, freeing you to stop anywhere, anytime along the way.

Simply unlock and your handlebars are disconnected from the wheels.  Your bike cannot be ridden away even if the lock is broken. And since it’s app-interfaced, you’ll know immediately if someone tries.

How many times have you taken an impromptu bike ride with no plans to stop, leaving your lock behind? Without a lock, your only option is to run in for that quick bathroom break, snack at the convenience mart, or warm baguette to go with dinner—hoping your bike is still there when you return.

It’s no wonder 50% of cyclists have had their bike stolen. And bike replacement can exceed $1,000. As more of us cycle to stay healthy and cut carbon emissions, we need the freedom to stop anywhere, anytime—as we would in a car. Furthermore, we need a solution that alerts us if anyone attempts to ride our bike away, so we can return to check on it. But there are no options on the market offering this level of convenience and connectivity.

As a cyclist and an engineer, I wanted to design a simple solution that would install right on your bike to deter the opportunistic thief. Not only does Quick Stop solve the problem, it’s even more secure for quick stops than most traditional bike locks--since it buys you time to stop a thief.

I often go on bike rides with no plans to stop, not carrying a lock.  I kept running into times when I wanted to stop for a minute - bathroom break, run in a convenience mart, or just pick up that one item at the store. My solution - run in and hope my bike was still there when I returned.

How It Works

Quick Stop is a simple solution that becomes an integral part of your bike. Lock it and the bike functions as usual. Unlock it and your handlebars disengage from the front wheel.  Simply put, your bike cannot be ridden.

If your bike is touched while you’re away, Quick Stop's Integrated Tamper Detector also sends a signal to your cell phone. So you can return with a friendly "like my bike?" before they even know what happened.

Our Story

 I’m a serial entrepreneur, an electrical engineer, and a long-time marketing executive. I've always been interested in new products and technologies. But once I bought a $1,300 bike to improve my personal health and cut carbon emissions, I quickly grew motivated to build a different kind of bike lock.  

To build Quick Stop, I drew on a number of resources and developed a few new skills along the way. Here’s the story of Quick Stop.

After determining the design approach and desired functionality for Quick Stop, I conducted a marketing survey and asked a range of cyclists their thoughts on the concept. Only after I received enthusiastic responses from bicyclists did I begin the design process.

I initially designed a 3D printed prototype using TinkerCAD 3-D, printing in plastic through the online printing service, Shapeways -- a phenomenal online resource for 3D modeling.

The prototype turned out great,  so I proceeded to create a machined (CNC) functional aluminum model. I needed to re-build my design files for CNC manufacturing. I chose Siemens’ SolidEdge design software, which is powerful though difficult and time-consuming to learn, yet once mastered, I found that the system offered amazing functionality.

Once new design files were complete, they were sent to a machine shop in California. All parts turned out great but required some tough tight tolerances, which were unexpected.

Revision Two: Plastic Models

Next, I contracted a senior mechanical engineer in Dallas, Texas, and we worked in tandem to refine the design and resolve remaining tolerance issues. The model was again rendered on a 3D printer in plastic and checked for fit and functionality.

Revision Two: Functional Prototypes

I let the design out for worldwide bidding on MFG.com  By far, the best bids came back from China and the people were eager and easy to work with.  I selected Shanxi Fuding of Taiyuan, Shanxi, China.  They have been an extremely responsive and reputable manufacturer.  Together we built 100 Quick Stop sets.

The initial functional prototypes were amazing. Units were sent to a Colorado test lab for stress testing while others were installed on bikes for functional testing. Functional testing revealed a cold welding issue solved by adding a thin brass ring -- problem solved.

One Final Adjustment

Quick Stop was conceived as a theft deterrent for short stops, with the rider near the bike. Designed to deter an opportunistic thief from riding away. Extensive field testing revealed a nagging apprehension of the bike being picked up and carried away.  The solution: an integrated tamper sensor.

The tamper sensor fits inside Quick Lock to sense bike movement and send a signal to the owner’s cell phone in real time. It uses a new class of internet of things (IoT) tools and protocols, a Nordic Semiconductor Bluetooth BLE5 low power module, with an AMD processor. Nordic, a leader in low-energy Bluetooth-enabled processors, has an extensive support network that makes it an ideal partner. The knock sensor hardware is a high-performance multi-axis shock sensor by Sensor Quest.

All code is written in C++ running on a Segger real-time operating system. 
The phone application is built using EVOThings Studio, providing a rich environment to develop IOS and Android applications. 

Finally, the circuit card is designed using PCB123 and manufactured by Sunstone Circuits. The integrated tamper sensor fits nicely inside the Quick Lock shell and can be removed to replace the battery.

What's Next

Quick Stop is 100 percent functional and simply needs to be cost-reduced by moving from a machined aluminum to cast aluminum design. Its printed circuit card will also need to be moved to an automated production line. All of this requires some planning and final testing.

Risks and challenges

Quick Stop is a fully functional design with hundreds of miles of real road testing already performed.

It’s a straightforward process to move parts from machining to casting. But it does introduce one issue, that of keeping tolerances in order. To address this, we’ve planned for secondary machining operations for critical tolerance surfaces, as required.

The product is also required to pass FCC and CE certification testing. While it’s possible that it may not pass, leading to minor redesign, those risks have been minimized by employing a pre-certified Bluetooth module with no high-frequency signals used outside of the module.

Product sourcing from China remains a minor risk in today's climate of tariff escalation. However production could be moved from China to another country if necessary as a worst-case scenario.
