The way independent films are financed, created and released is changing.
It's a revolution.
"This Last Lonely Place" was conceived with you in mind.
We want you to be part of it. We need you to be part of it.
Be part of the process.
Join the revolution.
What is Kickstarter?
Kickstarter is a website where you can support and nurture great creative projects. Here you can contribute money, in exchange for amazing rewards, and help finance our film. It turns the old way upside down. It used to be that once we finished a film, you'd show support by going out a see the movie or buying the DVD. At Kickstarter, you simply support us in advance. When the movie is finished, we bring it directly to you.
We've come up with some amazing rewards (which you can read to the right) but more importantly, with your contribution you get to participate and collaborate with Mudflap Films' amazing team to produce and finance this film. Everyone who gives $15 or more will get a supporter credit on the film.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE: We need to reach our stated goal of $75,000 in the allotted time, or we get nothing. So every dollar helps!
"This Last Lonely Place" is a noir-drenched thriller that is set largely in a dark taxi ride around the great colorful city of Los Angeles. (synopsis below.) Compelling characters, with twists and double crosses. Yes, there will be blood. There will be sex. Inspired by what they called B-movies back in the golden age of Hollywood, the film will be shot on a ultra-low budget, with a small, incredibly talented crew and a short schedule. Inspired by the past, but looking forward towards the future.
But the future is now. You are the future.
What's the film about?
"This Last Lonely Place"
Veteran Sam Taylor has returned from the war nearly deaf. He lives in a rundown downtown hotel and drives a yellow cab. One dark night in Beverly Hills, investment banker Frank Devore, slides into the taxi's back seat. Throwing $500 cash over the seat, Frank says "turn off the meter and just drive." Needing the money, Sam does as he's told. Nervous, and fueled by too much whiskey, Frank complains about his wife and confesses to a shady investment scheme. He's on the run, headed for a private jet. They pick up his beautiful and scheming mistress - the high-end escort Faye Gardner. She has a gun. An unspeakable crime has been committed. Something has gone horribly wrong, and Sam is now at their mercy. As this long and bloody evening progresses - through the lonely streets and back alleys of Los Angeles - the dark layers of deceit come to light. This night might never end.
Want to know more? Want read the script?
We're so confident that we have a great story to tell, that we've decided to make the script available for anyone to read. Now, of course, there will be spoilers, so if you'd prefer to experience the twists in the tale, you can just wait for the film itself. But we want to be open about this, so if you'd like to read the script first before you decide whether you'd like to donate, please feel to download it. We're happy for you to read, discuss and post your honest opinions, but please be respectful. Also, it will be Rated R.

Now, we have amazing people already involved on the film.
Support this film and you'll be directly supporting an amazing team of artists making it. The level of talent is almost unheard of on a Kickstarter project.
Writer/Producer/Director: Steve Anderson: Peabody Award winner and Chief Honcho at Mudflap Films. Steve wrote and directed Jon Favreau, Daryl Hannah, Sean Bean and Kelsey Grammer in "The Big Empty." A few years later, he produced and directed the insightful, and hilarious, documentary "Fuck." The film included the last filmed interview with Hunter S. Thompson, and holds the dubiously cool honor of featuring more f-words than any film ever produced.
Director of Photography - Chris Manley of "Mad Men." - Unfortunately, due to family issues, Chris has had to withdraw from actively shooting our film. He will however, stay on board and consult, so we look forward to his input and friendship. We're currently interviewing some amazing DP candidates.
Production Designer - Aaron Osborne: An Emmy Award winner. Currently working on Adam Sandler's newest film shooting in Boston, Aaron was also the PD of the seminal neo-noir "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" starring Robert Downey Jr.
Casting Directors - Rebecca Mangieri and Wendy Weidman: Emmy Award winners. Currently casting the new ABC network series "Last Resort," Wendy and Rebecca recently cast HBO's "Luck" with Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte. and have cast dozens of feature films and network shows. They are two of the best in the business.
Now, how is this going to happen?
"This Last Lonely Place" will be completely self-financed - using Mudflap's own money (Steve's selling his car!) and your Kickstarter contribution. There will be no traditional investors to pay back. We'll use non-traditional distribution techniques - putting the film directly into the audience's hands. We won't need to pay any traditional distribution fees. Perhaps a short festival run, then directly available to be downloaded or streaming using iTunes, Netflix and other great resources. We'll market the film using the ever expanding world of social media - Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Tumblr, YouTube and get the word out faster and farther than any newspaper ad could. We'll keep you updated all along the way and be transparent about it.
$75,000 is an incredibly low budget for any feature film. But it's still a lot of money to you and Mudflap Films. The only way this can be done right is to plan for it from the very start. Steve had the inspiration for a compelling genre story that could be created, from page one of the script, to be done at a very low budget, but still be an incredibly entertaining, visceral and visual film. Every dollar in the Kickstarter campaign we raise will go directly to the budget of making and delivering this movie. Your dollars will end up on screen.
Honestly, the times are a changin' for filmmakers. This time for the better. Crowd-sourcing sites like Kickstarter and always expanding social media platforms are revolutionizing the independent film world. New game-changing ways of financing, producing and distribution put the control back in the artist's hands. Creative artists can now harness the tremendous power of the internet, the tremendous power of you, and bring their creative works directly to the audience.
There have been some recent successes on Kickstarter. Read about The Canyons, Fat Kid Rules the World, or the amazing story of The Pebble Watch . Great (and financially successful!) films by filmmaker/actor Ed Burns (Nice Guy Johnny, Newlyweds) and The Polish Brothers (For Lovers Only) have led the way, and proven this plan can work.
From the bottom of our filmmaker hearts we thank you for your interest and support. One of the most inspiring things about this process is that we'll be able to maintain a direct connection with the people that most appreciate our work. There often seems to be a disconnect between the people that make movies, and the people that watch them. Kickstarter changes that and we're thrilled that you can join us and participate in pushing this new completely new paradigm for making films.
We'll be back soon with some exciting updates!
