About

Name Dropping is a trivia game for movie lovers.

Players go head-to-head with their friends and family to guess the titles of Hollywood's biggest films using clues like actors' names, movie quotes and fun facts.

With 300 movie trivia cards in the base game alone, Name Dropping gives you countless hours of fast-paced fun. Plus, our team took care to fine-tune every piece of trivia to make the game as much fun for a movie buff as for a casual player.

All you need is a group of people and a set of Name Dropping cards to start having an unforgettable, frustratingly fun night.

Each Name Dropping movie card contains six clues about a famous movie. They also come with a True Genre. This is a quick description of the movie and helps even the playing field for those who need an extra bit of help.

There are three types of clues on every Name Dropping movie card:

Playing Name Dropping is easy. We should know  — we spent a lot of time and effort making it that way. All you need for an unforgettable night is a few movie cards and an even number of players.

But if your group has an odd number of people, don't worry. It's just as fun to watch the game and bite your tongue when your friend doesn't know whose mama always said "life was like a box of chocolates."

Here are the rules:

There is nothing unnecessary in Name Dropping. The game doesn't need dice, timers, pencils or notepads. We wanted to make sure nothing would distract you from the star of the game: the movie cards.

Our team carefully crafted the trivia on each card for maximum effect.

  • We hand-picked actors from each movie to give the game the right balance.
  • We researched each film extensively to find the most accurate and interesting facts
  • We chose the most famous and helpful quotes from each movie.
  • We created descriptive True Genres to help balance the field between casual players and movie buffs.

Finally, to throw a mix strategy into the game, we arranged the clues on each card from hardest to easiest to make passing more risky.

The result is the Name Dropping movie card:

To make sure Name Dropping gives you as much value as possible, we're including 300 movie cards in the base game (plus more in the expansion packs). This means you could easily play an average of 30 to 40 games without ever having to repeat a card!

Plus, we've worked tirelessly — or maybe "obsessively" is more accurate  —  to make our base pack as diverse and well rounded as possible. No matter what kind of movies you like, Name Dropping will have trivia on plenty of them.

Check out a few of the movies we're featuring in the base pack:

Not only are we offering a base game with a whopping 300 movie cards, but we're also including three separate expansion packs in this Kickstarter campaign:

  • A Totally Tubular '80s pack (33 extra cards)
  • An Oh-the-Horror! pack (33 extra cards)
  • A special printable PDF pack (24 extra cards)

We have plenty of ideas for more expansions (Cult Classic pack, anyone?), but these three were our favorites, and we think you'll love them too. They're all Kickstarter exclusives, so you can only get them here.

Kickstarter only allows you to order one reward tier each time you support our game. This means that even though you can pledge as much as you want for any of the rewards, there's no place in the checkout process where you can choose a quantity.

However, after looking at other projects, we've found a way that you can order as many games as you want. Just follow these easy steps:

1. Click on the reward tier you want to access.

2. Multiply the original pledge amount by the number of units you want, and write the new number in the pledge amount box.

3. Go through the regular checkout process.

For example, if you wanted 3 of the Sophie's Choice tier, which is normally $25, you would click on the reward and write $75 in the pledge amount box. This is because $25 x 3 = $75.

We'll take care of sending you the correct number of base games and expansion packs that match your pledge amount.

If you have any questions about this process, just let us know and we'll be happy to work with you. Thanks!

Name Dropping started out pretty small.

The game's creator, Jesus Reyna, first came up with the idea during a road trip. This was before the era of smartphones and video streaming, when people had to find creative ways to keep from going crazy on long car rides. Jesus was always a movie buff, so to entertain his family during these long trips, he would use his movie knowledge to play a little game.

He would choose a movie off the top of his head and start naming actors who were in it. The first person to guess the name of the movie won. When that got too easy, he started throwing in quotes and fun facts about the movie to help spice things up. Little did he know that many years later this casual car game would turn into Name Dropping.

When he first got the idea to bring the game to Kickstarter, Jesus put together a small team, and soon they were on their way to figuring out exactly what it took to design a game. He expected some work, maybe a late night here or there.

In the end, it took a few years' time, talent and money (not to mention several focus groups) before Name Dropping was even ready for the design.

For the game's look, the group took inspiration from their love of movies and tried for a design that was sleek, elegant and   —  well, cost effective.

The first draft of the game featured "Slate cards," which gave players a chance to roll for more clues (yes, we also had a pair of dice). But after testing that aspect of the game, we decided to scratch the slate cards and the dice. We also got rid of the score pad, pencil and timer (yes, we had those too).

But something still wasn't working. The game needed to pop, so we went in a different direction. For our next look, the designer took the names of actors and splattered them all over the cover (literally dropping names).

Here's where the game box and cards lost the white. Instead of the muted design, they got a fresh coat of Oscar gold to go with the black. Here is where we really  started to experiment with color. We even considered losing the film reel look altogether in favor of a rainbow color scheme.

One of the things that anyone who has played Name Dropping will tell you is that the tagline "The Frustratingly Fun Movie Card Game" is an accurate description of how it feels to play the game. Our previous designs never really conveyed that, so we wanted to go out of left field and see how we could make the design reflect the essence of the game itself.

The best way of doing that? With emojis, of course!

Just kidding.

We won't bore you with all the details of what we vetoed. For our final and official design, we partnered with Cimetta Design and asked ourselves why it was important to make this game to begin with. The answer was pretty simple: We love movies and wanted to get people talking about them in ways they never had before.

After all the hard work, we've succeeded.

Our last few focus groups couldn't have been any more different than our first ones when we began this journey. Those who played the game didn't want to stop, and after they played, they talked about wanting to see the movies on the cards.

So the plan was to come up with a design that was simple, looked sleek and put the game first. The designers at Cimetta Design came up with a clean look and added a slate that also serves as a dialog box. What better way to visually say, "Let's talk about movies"?

By using a Hollywood Hills movie font in the tagline, we were able to add some fun to the title. Now add the new tagline of "Teams of  two. Set of clues. Who Knows Who?" to describe the gameplay, and eureka! We got it.

When we first started working on Name Dropping, we couldn't have known how rewarding, grueling, intense and electrifying the road ahead would be.

We've put our hearts and souls into Name Dropping. We've done our absolute best to make it the most authentic, well-rounded and impactful game it can be.

And we think you'll love it as much as we do.

I’ll admit that when I started this venture, I had no experience whatsoever making games — none, zilch, zero.

I did, however, have a great deal of experience playing them. I also have a wealth of knowledge about movies, everything from the actors who starred in them to stories about what happened behind the scenes to famous quotes and more.

But it wasn’t until 2013 that I had the idea to turn my passion for movies into a game. I shared the idea with my business partner Deana, and what you see before you is the outcome of that conversation.

After many revisions and time spent toiling with the rules, the looks and the materials — not to mention the focus groups — we've arrived at the official Kickstarter launch of Name Dropping: The Frustratingly Fun Movie Card Game

Not wanting to rush anything, we took our time to ensure we had the best version of the game to offer to you. We think you’ll love playing it as much as we loved putting it together. It'll be the most maddening, frustratingly fun game you’ll ever play.

Risks and challenges

The gameplay and aesthetics of Name Dropping were our biggest challenge, and that’s now behind us. To help us with the printing, packaging and delivery, we've hired AdMagic, the company that manufactured Cards Against Humanity. They have extensive experience with the manufacturing of tabletop games, and we have been working very closely with them to ensure that all of our backers will have Name Dropping in their homes as soon as possible.

We purposefully chose not to offer too many perks to avoid any complications with the manufacturing. The only real risk we would encounter would be delays in shipping, which would arise if we went far beyond our campaign goal. However, it should be noted that due to the simplicity of the game’s packaging, we don’t foresee any real complications regarding the manufacturing and delivery of Name Dropping.

Finally, we encourage everyone who thinks they might like to play Name Dropping to please support us on Kickstarter. The success of this campaign will give us the funds we need for the game's manufacturing. Therefore, it will ultimately determine whether or not the game will be available online and in stores. We need this campaign to be a success so that we can continue to create further editions and expansion packs so that everyone can enjoy more frustratingly fun times.
