About this project
In June 2013 we shot a movie based on the novel Happy Baby. We raised more than half the budget through kickstarter.
We were told it would cost more than a $1,000,000 to make Happy Baby, to tell such a complicated story, but we felt we could create something beautiful outside of the Hollywood system. Now we've almost finished Happy Baby, but we spent all our money making a great movie. Cross the finish line with us!
Holy #*^% we met our goal in nine days!
We set our goal intentionally low because Kickstarter is all or nothing. We still need to raise at least $10,000 to finish the movie (especially with Kickstarter and Amazon taking a nut). So we hope people will continue to contribute. But also, thank you everyone who has already decided to support Happy Baby!
"One of my favorite books of the decade." - Maud Newton
"Happy Baby is surely the most intelligent and beautiful book ever written about juvenile detention centers, sadomasochism, and drugs," Curtis Sittenfeld, The New York Times Book Review
"Told anti-linearly, this book illuminates darker corners of the sadomasochistic mind in a more thoughtful and sensitive fashion than I expected. It is about the marriage of sexuality and violence. Brave, sparse and lovely. Plus Stephen Elliott is super nice---I met him (and bought this book) at a Sex Worker's Art Show; he showed us his scars." - Alexandra, Good Reads
We've kept our budget extremely tight through this entire process. We couldn't have made the movie without community funding and great volunteers. Now we just need to finish post production so we can premier the movie and screen it for all our backers.

Risks and challenges
We're hoping to raise $15,000, the absolute minimum for sound mix, music composition, and color correction. But so far our lowest music cost is $7,500 and color correction is coming in at at least $8,500. We'll probably need to raise closer to $30,000 to finish the movie. What we don't raise on kickstarter we'll have to raise in investment, loans, and grants.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
