The Aurora Shanty will bring the magic of the night sky and marvel of the aurora borealis to the 2016 Art Shanty project on White Bear Lake. Come share a solar-powered, interactive, light experience in a cozy shanty on a freezing lake in February in Minnesota.
Who are these people? We are a ragtag group that just wants to make something fun for others to enjoy. Our group includes Alan Palazzolo, Kristen Murray, Rox Johnson, Leah Puffer, Kristina Durivage, Bill Bushey, Sam Thompson, and Caitlin Hargarten.
Don't you get a stipend? We sure do, but given the technical needs of such an electrical experience, our budget is a bit more than that. The stipend from the Art Shanty project helps us cover most of the material costs, but we are hoping you can get us all the way there. And keep in mind, all of us are still volunteering our time to make the shanty a reality even with material costs being covered.
What is this Art Shanty thing? Some say the Art Shanty project is like Burning Man but on ice. That's probably a bit of a stretch. Maybe it's like a tiny Burning Man on ice, and no one sets anything on fire because that would be crazy on ice, and oh yeah, its really, damn cold. The Art Shanties are an amazing, very Minnesotan event that celebrates our beloved tundra and creativity in a harsh environment. Seriously, regardless of whether you support us or not, come out and see the shanties; it's very worth it.
How are you gonna make the northern lights in a shack? Well, it involves some combination of ghosts, whales, and magnets. We actually don't want to spoil the fun for you, so just come out to the ice and we'll tell you all about our shanty and the aurora.
Generous in-kind donations have already been provided by the following. In Plain Sight art, a collaborative artists studio in NE Minneapolis, and artists Amy Baur and Brian Boldon donated studio space and equipment that has been critical to our success. The wonderful folks at squawk helped make the amazing video happen. The Guthrie also provided some materials.
Risks and challenges
There's actually no risk in funding this project. We are gonna do it either way and the Art Shanty event is totally free. We do hope you help out so that we aren't as financially drained from the project otherwise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
