This is why we launch the Domino.IO project – with everything you need to build Wi-Fi products and full life-cycle services to support your projects.
If you want just a Domino Core and here is a simple way to make it work. We will send a free bare PCB adapter plate to you to simply power up the Core. The plate features footprint of a 1117 power regulator and PCB antenna. The following diagram demonstrate the layout. It is not yet finished. So if you have any suggestions for this plate, please let us know asap. We will send the PCB plate for free and you can get multiple plates if you backed multiple Domino Core separately.
WHAT IS DOMINO.IO
Domino.IO is a low-cost, high-performance 802.11 bgn WiFi hardware platform, with a modular design architecture, unlimited extension capabilities and Arduino compatibility. It is suitable for mass production, enhanced with full life-cycle services for makers.
THE HARDWARE KIT
Domino.IO features a modular design architecture.
At the heart of all boards is the Domino Core, which is a low-cost, high-performance 802.11n WiFi module based on Qualcomm/Atheros AR9331 WiSoC. Domino Core is completed by Domino Pi and Domino Qi.
Domino Pi breaks out all the pins of the Domino Core to easy 2.54mm pitch headers, integrates an USB-UART bridge, +5V/2A DC/DC power supply, power and wireless LEDs and a PCB Antenna. Domino Pi can be further extended with the 7 already available tile boards. It is a small Linux computer that you can customize yourself.
Domino Qi extends the Domino Core with an ATMega32U4 MCU, and is fully compatible with the Arduino Yun, but crammed into a tiny form factor. Plug the Domino Qi Mini board onto the Domino Qi baseboard to turn it into a board fully compatible with the ubiquitous Arduino Shield form factor and benefit from hundreds of already existing shields for rapid prototyping. Domini Qi Mini can also be extended using 4 tile boards if equipped with female headers.
Domino Core is the heart of Domino.IO. It is designed for makers to easily build their own products based on it. It is compact, only 1.6 square inches with 60 castellated pins (2mm pitch), 3xEthernet, USB2.0, serial port, SPI, I2S, SLIC, SPDIF, JTAG, 9xLEDs and 29 GPIOs. Each Domino Core is calibrated using a dedicated machine.
Domino Pi (Dev board and kit)
Domino Pi is designed both as a Domino Core development board and as an extension. You can develop your own board based on the Domino Pi. See the pinout diagram below. We have seven useful tile boards available, providing easy to use building blocks, enabling you to extend the Pi board as you wish.
Domino Qi (Arduino Compatible)
Domino Qi Mini is a small board that is a fully compatible derivative of the original Arduino Yùn, crammed into a tiny form factor. It is a low-cost, compact OpenWRT-based 802.11 bgn WiFi board based on Qualcomm/Atheros AR9331 WiSoC and on the Atmel ATMega32U4 MCU. Communication between the two chips is achieved using Arduino Yùn-compatible Bridge hardware and software library.

Playing with Linux and OpenWRT
Domino core comes pre-installed with an open-source OpenWRT Linux system, allowing you to install more than 3,000 ready to use software packages from our repository. You can also rebuild the whole distro from scratch and customize it to your own needs.

Programing using Python, Node.js and npm, PhP, git, Lua, SSH
Using Domino, you are not tied to any particular framework or language: pick up the one you are already efficient with and create server or client applications faster! Use the built-in ACE web editor to edit your code directly.
Build a wireless music player
We provide an open-source I2S audio codec and player that you can use to play music from your USB disks or directly from an Internet audio stream. It never has been so easy to build a wireless music player, add audio/music to your home automation and pet care.
Control an R/C car using your smartphone
Developing a small WiFi receiver to control a radio-controller car is never made so easy. The board has Domino Core on one side and a microcontroller on the other side, almost the same size as Domino core. Check this video of how to set it up.
Just like the original Arduino Yùn board, the Domino Qi is loaded with Linino OS, which is a fork of OpenWRT AA1209. You can explore the functionality of LininoOS to completely control the board and all the attached devices.
Domino Qi Mini is compatible with the Arduino Yùn board, but with a smaller form factor. Along with the Domino Qi baseboard, you get a full-size Arduino Yùn compatible board. You can thus use all your existing Arduino source code and program the Domino Qi directly using the standard Arduino IDE.
We don't want to trap you into any particular cloud service. We leave you the choice, and depending on your requirements, you have several nice options:
Sparkfun data stream: Want an open source cloud service for simple logging? Try phant from data.sparkfun.com. It is free, robust and open source. You can also install phant on your own server. On Domino, you can use Node.js for example to push data to phant.
ThingSpeak: Want nice charts, and also be able to send commands and tweets to your Domino? Try ThingSpeak, it is also free, robust and open source, although more sophisticated.
Weaved: Want a stable, commercial but proprietary cloud service? Try Weaved. We negotiated with Weaved to provide a free cloud connection service for Domino users. We took our time to design Domino and to make sure that all our prototypes work perfectly before launching our Kickstarter campaign. Now, we have everything ready and will be able to launch production and ship all orders quickly.
Risks and challenges
We have made great efforts developing the boards, making them stable and otherwise performing well. However, in order to meet the expectations of DIY makers, we will have to keep the cost as low as possible while still providing high quality products, which can only be achieved through mass production. In this regard, we need to raise a considerable amount of funds in order to cover component sourcing cost for these large quantities.
There is a total of 11 boards that we will launch concurrently with this Kickstarter compaign. We need to manage the production, quality control, packing and delivery for all of them, which is a tough work.
We need to finish full CE/FCC/IC certification for all the boards, which is also time-consuming and costly.
Besides the boards themselves, providing life-cycle services for makers is a big challenge on its own, as each project has unique features. We need to fully understand each maker's requirements and provide a full technical solution in hardware engineering appropriately. We started by customizing mini smart routers for our customers and we have now a good experience in doing ODM/OEM projects.
