Gypsy Horizon Belly Dance is excited to announce our first out of state performance at the March 2013 Cues & Tattoos Festival in Seattle, WA! Gypsy Horizon has been granted a performance slot in one of three shows to be held throughout the weekend. We are also proud to announce that we will be dancing to original music by The Gypsy Underground Band of Chickaloon, Alaska.
Gypsy Horizon is Anchorage, Alaska's only troupe dedicated to performing pure American Tribal Style ® belly dance. Troupe members include director Carrie Jenkins, Kate Brown, Marla Carter, Amy Locke, and Fauna Reynvaan.
So, what is American Tribal Style ® belly dance?
American Tribal Style ®, also known as ATS ®, was created by Carolena Nericcio and is associated with the formation of her troupe FatChanceBellyDance ® in 1987. ATS ® is an improvisational belly dance style where dancers learn non-verbal cues and moves that can be led or followed in a group. This allows dancers to group improvise while giving the audience the appearance of a choregraphed number. Even though ATS ® is a modern style of belly dance and costuming, Carolena's influences include classic and folkloric dances of Eqypt, India, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.
Why are we raising money and how will your donation help?
As anyone who has lived in Alaska or has visited knows, it is expensive to leave this beautiful state. While we love to spend our time dancing, at this time we are unable to support our art on paid performances alone.
In addition to our performance at the festival, Gypsy Horizon will also be using this opportunity to attend a variety of dance technique workshops taught by instructors from around the world. Your donation will help us meet our fundraising goal of $4,100 and will go towards lodging, airfare, and a portion of our workshop fees. Any additional money made over our goal will be spent to fully fund our workshops. This will be Gypsy Horizon's 5-year anniversary dancing together so help us make it a year to remember!
What will you get for supporting us?
Our eternal love and gratitude!!!
You will also receive Gypsy Horizon gifts based on your donation as our way of saying "Thank You!" for your support. This project will give us the opportunity to bring refined technique and dynamic performances to our Alaskan audiences.
Thank you! See you in Seattle!
Risks and challenges
After we have met our kickstarter goal and funds are secure, we will begin looking for flights that will get us to Seattle the cheapest as well as during the necessary dates. Most of the ladies of Gypsy Horizon have work and/or family obligations that require specific flight times. While we have tried to calculate the exact amount of money needed for airfare, lodging, and partial workshops, we run the chance of having miscalculated the amount we need to get all five Gypsy Horizon troupe members to and from Seattle. The price of flights can change in a day or even hours. If additional funds are needed, we will have to find other fundraising or performance opportunities. We all intend to make this trip and fulfill the goals outlined in our project barring unforeseen dancer injury/health issues, weather/natural disaster complications, change of location or dates for the festival and flight cancellations beyond our control.
Gypsy Horizon hopes, and expects, this experience will be something really great that we can learn and grow from. Being fully funded will allow us to focus on our dance technique and ideas to put on a really great show for the audience in Seattle.
