A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
In 2012, my business parter, Mr. Dave Clark and I decided to pursue an idea to protect business travelers and tourists from pickpockets and electronic identification theft. Hence, Wellspring Ideas, LLC was established. We are currently based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.
It took us a year or so before we have the design finalized and production started. The patent was issued to us in March 3, 2015. Our first product is the Travel Pocket, oriented toward the business traveler. A full description of this product can be accessed by clicking onto the link to our website. Every year our sales have been steadily growing and we expect it to continue in light of the growing number of pickpockets and electronic identity theft.
While marketing Travel Pocket, it was brought to my attention that the concept for a travel pocket is perfect for cyclists. This idea was validated after I presented this to Mr. Brent Emery, a silver medalist in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in cycling. As an avid cyclist and business owner, he saw the marketability of the product as it addresses the problem regarding finding the best way to carry the essentials mentioned earlier.
So here's a brief introduction about our second product, aptly called the Bicycle Travel Pocket.
The Bicycle Travel Pocket is an essential gear for any cyclist as well as runners, hikers, skiers and active lifestyles. Whether its a weekend trail or a trip on the road, you'll have immediate access to your essentials, such as ID, medical supplies, phone, wallet, etc.
No more contorting your arm to get into a rear jersey pocket. No more dropping things by accident on the way out, or while trying to put it back in. No more wondering how secure they are while on the bike or in a crowd. The Bicycle Travel Pocket works perfectly for running, hiking, skiing and other active sports and activities.
It securely and conveniently encases the bare necessities. It is also the perfect way to bring an emergency bar, inhaler, or other medication along with you for your ride. These items are crucial to have on you always particularly for longer rides and emergency situations.
Bicycle Travel Pocket is worn under the arm, using elastic straps to ensure a fit that is comfortable, yet secure to the torso. The pouch and straps were designed with mobility in mind, so they won't hinder your movement when traversing the open road or the weekend trail.
Regardless of where you ride, you don't have to worry about leaving the essentials at home. The Bicycle Travel Pocket goes where you go and keeps your items close and secure. It eliminates bulky pouches, packs or bags.
The pocket is made up of black urethane 400 denier nylon. There are two pockets, the outside pocket is lined with an RFID blocking material (EMI/RFI Shielding) plated with Nickel/Copper for superior corrosion resistance) ideal for credit cards to prevent electronic identity theft. The inside pocket is for a cell phone, not lined with the RFID blocking material to allow a phone signal. Both pockets are secured with a hook and loop enclosure (velcro) to ensure they stay in during the most active movements!
The straps are made of polypropylene webbing. A plastic buckle and slip locks are carefully placed to ensure ample adjustments to fit most body types. Left handed people will have no difficulty using the product. It is gender friendly so good for both men and women.
Pocket approximate size is 8.5 X 6.75 inches and weighs 1.6 oz.
You may notice a slight difference in the design between the Travel Pocket and the Bicycle Travel Pocket. The latter has only one shoulder strap, this was designed specifically to enable the user multiple adjustments to fit his/her body type.
This slight modification is still covered by the patent assigned to us by the US Patent Office.
Risks and challenges
The Bicycle-Travel Pocket is a new and innovative product designed not just for cyclists of every type, but also for walkers/joggers/runners, snow boarding, skiing and hiking etc.
When we showed the Bicycle Travel Pocket to Brent Emery, an Olympic Silver Medalist cyclist in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, he immediately said "This is perfect for cyclists and active people". " It's a smart way to carry the essentials, cleverly designed and very light weight. You don't know you're wearing it"
Product development and testing has been a great experience. We've gone through a number of versions, changing strap placement, and compartment angle. The fabric has been changed a few tines and the final version selected for best comfort and durability. The strap adjustment is very easy.
The inside of the bag is lined with RFID blocking material. This keeps your phone and credit card identities safe from those pesky criminals with scanners.
The Bicycle Travel Pocket fits men and women equally well, as well as the vast majority of body sizes. One size fits all from X-SM through XXL!
With the funds raised from our Kickstarter campaign, cyclists, runners, as well as winter sports, will be enjoying the benefits of immediate access and security to the essentials they want and need to have with them.
