What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

These photos and videos provide a detailed look at this project’s development.

We have built a prototype ARM based controller with a pin super set of the now 20+ year old Parallax BASIC stamp.

It is downloadable via micro USB connection, and runs 700 times or more faster.  It has tool support for BASIC, GCC C and C++, and mBed tools.

In the final version we will add an optional JTAG/SW connection.  That connection can be either as a debugger or device under test.  With that it will also be programmable with Keil, IAR and other Eclipse based tools.

Risks and challenges

We have built an initial prototype and it does what we want. We are going to move the JTAG connector to the top of the PCB and swap some components to make it easier to built yourself. It is an open source hardware design so it is easy to do that. So other than layout error, the initial build should go smoothly.
