This opera, which I composed in collaboration with my mother, Dr Bernice Johnson Reagon lives in an unprecedented intersection of science fiction, opera, African-American art & spirituality, feminism, and climate activism.
It features a cast of 15 amazing singers of singular talent and diversity, and a 5 member orchestra which includes my band BigLovely, and a striking set design and visual installation, and a dream team of designers and creatives.
We are asking that you join us, and support us as we finish the creation of this ambitious project and bring it to communities around the country and the world.

My mom Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon introduced me to Octavia’s work. Toni Morrison put us in the amazing position of teaching it at Princeton. During that class, we arc’ed the story with our music -- from spirituals, rock, folk, funk -- and realized that we could sing the book.
For my mother and me, the essential thing in our pieces is the singing. To us, when you are taken from your land and stripped of rights, your name, your people, your religion, and assaulted relentlessly–your home is the sound your body can make.
Theater and music are great ways to communicate difficult things and to inspire people to actually look at them and to face them.
To make change we must imagine change, and ground-breaking art is one of our most promising tools for reconfiguring the public imagination.
Everywhere we have gone we have had an incredible response. We know that people are hungry for the work and the conversation. Read more about our journey in Chapel Hill, Abu Dhabi and Williams College and here.
We have an amazing team of collaborators and artists including Eric Ting (Director), Meiyin Wang (Producer), Millicent Johnnie (Choreographer), Arnulfo Maldonado (Scenic Design), Abigail Deville (Installation), Chris Kuhl (Lights), John Kemp (Audio Systems), Dede Ayite (Costumes). Risks and challenges
We have already shown the piece in Abu Dhabi and North Carolina, and working to book other venues who have already expressed their interest. It is a large company to go on tour, and we want to make sure that we are creating a piece that will be able to travel to communities who might not otherwise be able to afford to host us. We want to also create a touring fund so that we might be able to support those visits if needed.
