SCOUT'S OATH is a short documentary film that examines the Boy Scouts of America’s (BSA) existing anti-gay policy towards the organization’s one million adult volunteers in the wake of the BSA’s decision to permit participation by gay youth.
The film will focus on the story of Len Lanzi, a former Boy Scouts of America (BSA) official who served as the executive director of the Los Padres Council of the Boy Scouts of America. During his tenure, he oversaw 300 scouting units on the West Coast. In October 2000, after coming out as gay in a public speech, Lanzi was fired from the organization.
The film will mostly take the form of a personal exposé piece set against the backdrop of the much larger sociocultural issues of gay rights and social equality in 21st century America. This short documentary is unique because it presents the story of an adult BSA official who was excommunicated from the organization because of his sexual orientation.
Len Lanzi’s story and the film will appeal to people of all ages, and my hope is that audience members walk away thinking about issues related to social equality, gay rights in America, and the profound impact the Boy Scouts have had on young people in this country as well as the formulation of national perceptions regarding sexuality, identity, and notions of normalcy in American society.
RYAN RAMBACH AND HIS CREW are students in the Media Arts and Culture film production program at Occidental College in Los Angeles, and Scout's Oath is Ryan's senior thesis film. Upon completion, we will be entering the project into several film festivals. The entire crew is donating their talents for free but we need a little more support to take us to the finish line.
ALL DONATIONS go towards equipment rentals, transportation costs, production supplies, and archival footage licensing fees. Any donation you can make is greatly appreciated and crucial to the success of this project. Any money that exceeds our goal will go to film festival entry fees.

Risks and challenges
Certainly, making a single subject documentary film comes with some challenges in ensuring the piece is both thoughtful and engaging. However, audience members will find Len Lanzi a fascinating, outspoken, and sympathetic character, and I am confident that I will be able to apply my extensive experience as a documentary filmmaker to produce my most compelling film project yet.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
