About

'The Age of No Retirement?'

We hear constantly about the demographic time bomb, the baby boomers who stole the nation’s prosperity, and the unsustainable cost of paying for retirement in the future. But there’s another side to this. A really positive side.

35% of the UK population is over 50, and we are healthier, more skilled, better educated and more dynamic than ever before. So why are the over-50s in the UK not playing a more central role in the economy, in society?

With your support of this campaign, Trading Times and our partners will bring together for the first time Britain's key thinkers, influencers and innovators to re-model how we live and work in the age of no retirement.

We will bring together more than 100 leaders from all sectors of society for a series of live-streamed debates on a wide range of topics. Artists will convert the discoveries and ideas into an interactive public exhibition that will capture an even broader range of insights. The resultant impact will change the way we think; the way we behave.

What we're doing hasn't been done before

For one week, under one roof in Central London we are going to bring together in a creative forum: the young, the old, the employers, the employed, the policy makers, the artists, the innovators, the inspired, the rational.

We will address one of the most pressing issues of our time: how to seize the opportunities inherent in a society in which people are living much longer.

The general public will feed in their thoughts, responses and ideas directly over the week and our creative forum will be documented live on TV, Twitter, Facebook, through Google, Radio, Tabloids, in the Broadsheets, and in communities and in schools across the country.

We must break new ground. We will re-imagine new futures and generate new insights. We will do this collaboratively.

But without your help this will not happen

Your donations are vitally important. Not only will you make 'The Age of No Retirement?' possible and help change the shape of modern society, but you will also help create our Kickstarter success which will enable us to attract more people, more employers and more media and deliver a much greater impact.

'The Age of No Retirement?' event will require £35,000 to cover the essential ingredients for a resonant event that has a real and lasting impact.

'The Age of No Retirement?' will achieve 3 main objectives:

  • By attracting extensive media coverage and generating high volumes of social media discourse, we will raise awareness of the demographic and socio-economic trends and issues that will shape society of tomorrow, and in so doing we will...
  • ...begin to meaningfully overcome the many misperceptions by employers, politicians and leaders about the valuable role people continue to play throughout their lives.
  • Through the process of robust debate across all aspects of a population that is living longer, we will discover new ideas and gain widespread support for new initiatives that will make positive tangible improvements to society and communities across the UK.

Over the course of the first 2 days, more than one hundred VIP debaters in groups of six will grapple with 7 fundamental themes:

  • Work & employment
  • Ageism & prejudice
  • Health & well-being
  • Technology & communication
  • The plus-50 consumer
  • Self, family & society
  • Knowledge & education.

Each debate will have its own facilitator and its own artist who together will ensure a high level of productivity and the capture of insights and ideas in visually captivating ways.

On day 3 we will be hard at work behind closed doors, converting all the insights, outputs, discoveries and ideas into visual images.

But then we will reopen with a 3-day interactive public exhibition that will enable everyone to contribute to the discussions and build consensus around key ideas and initiatives that need to be taken forward and given louder voice.

Stretch goals

Every £10,000 raised over the £35,000 target will enable us to host another 'The Age of No Retirement?' event in another major UK city - helping us continue and build the momentum for awareness and positive change generated at the London event.

We want to run 4 similar events across the UK in the 12 months following 'The Age of No Retirement?' event in London - 2 in the North, 1 in the Midlands and 1 in the West.

And we've assembled the most awesome team to ensure we exceed all expectations

A bit about Trading Times, the host of 'The Age of No Retirement?'

Trading Times is two things.

Trading Times (www.tradingtimes.org.uk) is an award-winning online social enterprise that matches the skills and experience of over 50s with the flexible resource needs of local businesses.

Trading Times is also a dynamic force for positive social change. We are taking centre stage in one of the most exciting social, cultural and economic shifts of our time – to ensure that across the UK we take full advantage of a society in which people live longer, healthier and more productive lives than ever before.

‘The Age of No Retirement?’ is a landmark event that will bring together for the first time employers, policy makers, corporations (big and small), designers, artists, academics, inventors and social commentators to explore the social and economic opportunities of a Britain in which the average person now lives 10 years longer than was expected just 40 years ago.

Risks and challenges

Risk: Not achieving representation from all sectors of society and industry to ensure that the debates include and reflect the broadest range of perspectives, ideas and insights.
Solution: The team is already engaged with key stakeholder groups, thought leaders, government policy makers, large corporates and SMEs and has achieved, even at this early stage, sufficient committed buy-in and participation to ensure a successful 'Age of No Retirement?' event. As word is spreading about the event so are target organisations and individuals approaching us directly to become involved!
