WHO ARE WE?
We are a group of film makers in South GA. My name is Joseph Lavender and I created "Blackflight Studios" as a production company to produce horror feature films from. I shot a feature zombie film two years ago called "EXIT 101" that will be getting a world wide DVD and VOD distribution in major markets this year. We are dedicated to making quality films based around telling an interesting story.
WHAT'S THE FILM ABOUT?
The film is based off of a real local urban legend, and a real location (don't go trying to find where it is, the cops will GET YOU!) in Cordele GA. The location has many different stories tied to it by those who were brave enough to travel to its location. Our film is meant to give a more detailed account of the legend and give it a more entertaining spin. This area is rich with history and old ghost stories making it the perfect setting for this kind of film. The story follows a young girl by the name of Mattie who has been bothered by a paranormal experience she had as a child, who seeks the help of new guy in town Zeke, who happens to be a member of a rag tag group of paranormal investigators called "G.H.O.S.T". Mattie convinces him and his team to set up camp at the location where she had her experience, which just so happens to be the spot where a church was built back during the civil war period. According to the locals, an indian slave named "Maggie" was brutally murdered there, with 3 of her toes being severed by her attackers leaving her with only 7. The locals dubbed her "Seven Toe Maggie" and claim her spirit still haunts the land. The film follows Mattie and her new friends as they try to unravel the secret behind Seven Toe Maggie.
WHAT'S FUNDING GOING TOWARDS?
One of the things that's common amongst low budget and indie films is lack of compensation for talent. If your an actor you know what I'm talking about. Many projects are "copy/credit/meals" in terms of payment. This is fine if you are just starting out, because everyone starts somewhere. But there comes a point where you have to draw the line. Film making and acting are two very tough fields to work in. Because you almost always spend more money than what you get in return. I want my talent to feel respected and feel like they are worth my time, and to do that I would like to be able to compensate them for busting their tails on set for obscene amounts of time. Many productions fall apart before filming completes, many actors never even get that copy/credit and I want to be one of those projects where actors enjoy working with us and will want to work with us again. These low budget projects are a crap shoot for any actor, and many of them have no idea what they are getting into when they agree to work for free. Help me pay my actors! We do not get funded unless we raise the minimum amount by the deadline!
WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU DONE?
I produced, wrote and acted in a feature called EXIT 101. You can see the trailer below..
IS THIS BEING SHOT ON FILM? BETA? HI-8? SUPER 16MM?
This film is being shot on a Panasonic GH-2 hybrid DSLR using prime lenses, and a Canon T3i as B cam. The GH2 has the unique ability of being able to mount Cinema PL mount glass that is usually restricted to Hollywood film cameras.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FILM?
I got into film after getting burned by a director on an indie horror film that never made it past youtube. I worked on several hollywood films as an extra "The Crazies" and "The Blindside" being two examples. After that I got the buzz to shoot my own movie, and started learning everything I could about film making. Here we are, one feature film later!
I THOUGHT MOVIE DIRECTORS WERE RICH?
If your name is Steven Spielberg or James Cameron. Most people don't know that Robert Rodriguez got his start when he made a feature film for just 7000.00. Movies aren't cheap to make, but everyone has to start somewhere!
WHATS SO SPECIAL ABOUT YOU GUYS VS. THESE OTHER GUYS?
There are tons of people in bigger places doing this. But we are in the middle of nowhere shooting feature films. We are also passionate about what we do, and put tons of time and effort into our projects. We want to share our work with the world, and continue to make movies in the future. Technology has advanced so much now that the power to create emotional cinematic experiences is in the palm of our hands!
HAVE YOU STARTED FILMING YET?
No, right now we are casting. But, you can see a teaser scene we did to test our camera/lighting. Please be aware that the content of this video has no bearing on the story and is merely a glorified lighting and camera test. We intend to have casting completed by the end of February with principal photography starting in late Feb. early March. We will shoot for 10-15 days. Only on weekends.
