Über dieses Projekt

In 2003, an estimated 15 million Americans were playing fantasy football, an online competition created by drafting “dream teams” to compete against friends. By the 2015 NFL season, that number had nearly quadrupled to an estimated 56.8 million Americans registered to a league. When these leagues were starting, it was kind of hard to imagine the success they have achieved. Once aimed squarely at football aficionados, fantasy football has become a facet of American pop culture, extensively discussed in magazines, on television programming and all across the internet. Daily Infographic reports that during this past NFL season, the fantasy football industry is valued at nearly $18.6 billion dollars. That’s right, billion with a b. The success of fantasy football was quickly adapted to accommodate just about every other sport. Sports fans can now compete against their friends in everything from basketball and hockey all the way down to golf and NASCAR.

Fantasy football leagues really boomed in popularity when the fantasy sites became so accommodating that one doesn’t even need to watch a game in order to play. Fantasy sites like ESPN and Yahoo allow the user to make all the decisions and set rosters well before the ref flips the coin. This feature helped all fantasy leagues boom in popularity but none took off quite like fantasy football, a reflection of the sport’s popularity among American pop culture. There are many people who don’t watch any games, but still compete in multiple leagues because they enjoy playing with their friends (I’ve been one of them). We created a game that appealed to this competitive nature in people, but based around another pop culture obsession: Hollywood releases.

The challenge in making a movie league that can be compared to the sports leagues is creating a level of difficulty. Our original game was based solely off the accumulation of points scored from weekend box office grosses. The issue we found is that this formula does not really contain an element of surprise. For an example, I’ll use the recent release of Warner Bros’ Batman v Superman. The movie was announced in 2013 at San Diego Comic Con. In the following three years, Warner Bros. spent an estimated $165 million on advertising, making sure every person who watches television, surfs the web or drives past billboards was aware of the movie. This move was a success for the studio because Batman v Superman zoomed past records with a haul of $166.00 million during its first three days. That is a haul larger than most movies ever dream of making and one that would certainly win any competition based off of box office grosses.

After a couple years of tinkering, we believe we have developed a league that is comparable to the sports leagues, is easy for the average player to comprehend and play along, and has a genuine element of competitiveness. This is done by factoring a film’s critical evaluation into its score. There are a variety of websites that aggregate critical reaction to movies, we’ll keep ours limited to Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes is the most popular website that collects critical reviews of movies and gives them a score of 0%-100%. 0% means the film didn’t garner any positive press, while 100% means the film was a hit with critics. The way a film earns a score is by taking their weekend gross at the box office and multiplying it by the percentage the film has on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the huge crowds that turned out to see Batman v Superman over Easter weekend, word of mouth quickly spread that the film isn’t very good. The film currently holds a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, which gave it a score of 43.16 ($166 x 29% = 43.16). Earlier this year, Deadpool shattered predictions by pulling in $132.43 million, based largely on positive word of mouth from audiences and critics alike. Despite earning $33.57 million less than Batman v Superman, it scored 66.75 more points because it sustained an 83% on the website ($132.43 x 83% = 109.91).

Here is a list of the ten highest box office weekends from 2015 followed by their score using our system.

10. Spectre $70.40 x 64% = 45.06

9. Fifty Shades of Grey $85.17 x 25% = 21.29

8. American Sniper $89.27 x 72% = 64.27

7. Inside Out $90.44 x 98% = 88.63

6. Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 $102.67 x 70% = 71.87

5. Minions $115.72 x 55% = 63.64

4. Furious 7 $147.19 x 81% = 119.22

3. Avengers: Age of Ultron $191.27 x 75% = 143.45

2. Jurassic World $208.81 x 72% = 150.34

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $247.97 x 92% = 228.13

While the tent pole studio releases still score massive numbers, it becomes apparent that films with more modest box office receipts and a high Rotten Tomatoes score can compete with the bigger releases. When a player has a number of these well received smaller releases, their scores quickly become compatible with someone who used their first pick to gamble on Batman v Superman.

Like most fantasy leagues, most of the action takes place in the draft. Using our system, players are challenged with different objectives. They need to assess a film’s buzz and determine if it will be a hit both financially and critically. Success of past franchise entries, the talent involved in the film, media marketing and the release date are just some of the variable a player needs to juggle when determining which movies to draft.

Feedback to our idea has been tremendous from fantasy sports fan, movie buffs and even people just looking for a new game to play with their friends. We have developed this Kickstarter as a means to regain some of the money we spent on the site and to raise funds for future advancements.

There are a variety of ways we aim to expand after our initial exposure. We want to create a Live Draft Window, so you can chat with your friends while you draft.  We also intend to eventually send out personalized emails recapping your team's weekend performance.  The end goal is a mobile app that lets users update their teams through their phone without having to visit the website.

Our first goal is creating a "premium" version of our game. Players can create leagues of varying lengths (up to a year), leagues will have a playoff setting, and users will be able to draft a second, third or fourth weekend of a film.  Allowing multiple weeks of a film is a feature that keep the scores from skewing to the few massive tent pole releases. Basically this prevents the person who drafts Star Wars from automatically winning the league.  If we are successful in raising our funds, we should be able to have premium leagues available by 2017.  We currently play a version of a premium league using an Excel Spreadsheet and can assure you the competition is much fiercer and scores are closer.

For now we are offering gift incentives to donors, but pledges of $100 or more will be invited to beta-test premium leagues as soon as they are ready.  Thank you checking us out and we greatly appreciate your time.  Please feel free to contact us regarding anything!

Risiken und Herausforderungen

There are a variety of elements that can delay production of a website but we believe we have found a developer that is able to produce a result that would be compatible to Yahoo or ESPN. This is our first Kickstarter production and we're still getting the hang of how things work around here. We believe we should have a functioning website for donors to utilize developed within half a year of completed donations.
