About this project
These Piranhas are friendly.
The knotless design began one day last December as a doodle on my iPad. I wasn't sure it would even work, but all I had to lose was a coat hanger. So with the help of a screw driver and pair of pliers I made the very first prototype. It worked better than I hoped and it was then I realized it looked like a fish bone. This doodle eventually became my first project the "Fish Bone Knotless Gear Tie." I even made a larger bottle opening version, "Snapper". You can see that project, with all the comments and updates, under our bio.
For Piranha I went back to the drawing board; good old fashioned pencil and paper. The difference this time around was that I had all the great feed back from our backers. Once this new design was ready I traced it onto aluminum flat bar and carefully cut it out.
Nature has its hand in my work. I drew inspiration from the actual skeleton of a Red Eye Piranha. It took plenty of paper and aluminum before I reached what you see here. It was then I approached a metal shop to create the first production sample.
And so, Piranha is our 2.0. It combines the best features of both the original Fish Bone and Snapper. It's strong, compact, awesome with paracord, and opens bottles. We didn't stop there though. Minor modifications turn Piranha into a can opener, carabiner, wire stripper, or polished accessory.
You'll be surprised how many things you can do with this little fish. "in loop", "quick release", and "splice" are just a few of the ways to tie it.
With your feedback and support, Eldrick and I will continue making Piranha better. We'll work with metal fabricators to get them cut and finished. Then we'll send them off to you and your adventures!
Fish are good luck. Piranha is cool!
Note: Not for climbing or load bearing applications where failure would cause damage or injury.
What were funding. First and foremost we want Piranha to become a reality. Your support connects us with ways to improve what arrives at your front door. Whether it's making it out of titanium, using high tech testing, or placing fancy etching, we want you to be part of it all.
All my work has come to life completely by hand (I could really use a new set of hobby files). I'm at a point where I could take a pencil drawing to a legitamate prototype without using a third party. That is, if I had the proper equipment. It's what I'm crossing my fingers for; a way to update how I go about research and development. I hope to fund equipment such a hobby laser cutter or even a CNC Milling machine. That would be fantastic. In any case, I'd be very greatful for new set of files.
We hope you like what we're doing. Thank You for all you support in making this a reality. Brent and Eldrick.
Risks and challenges
Your opinion matters to us. As this project moves along we’ll ask you what you think. We’ll take your input and make minor design changes to accommodate our backer’s general preference. That being said we won’t be able to please everyone 100% of the time. There won’t be any radical changes, but it’s very possible that the final product will have slight modifications when all is said and done. For example in our last project (Fish Bone Knotless Gear Tie) we increased the thickness of a failure point by 1/16” to increase strength. Any changes we make are intended to improve what arrives at your doorstep based on your feedback.
Doing major production runs involve working with manufacturers that are not open to the general public. There are lead times to getting large amounts of materials on top of waiting in line for production. We’ve taken this into consideration. We hope to ship everything sooner but delays are possible with material availability, production lead times, and getting the product right.
This is the project schedule based on the what we learned from our first rodeo. Assuming all goes well.
2 weeks: Processing and Funds transfer.
6-8 weeks: Production for Piranha and Paracord.
6 weeks: Shipping.
We're working on getting reasonable pricing for a titanium version. At this thickness we would need to get this waterjet cut. This triples the production cost on top of it already being an expensive material. Wish us luck!
Piranha is a keychain version that combines what Fish Bone and Snapper does. It is bigger and stronger than Fish Bone but smaller/compact to the Snapper.
