A computer designed, laser cut, welded safe for your vehicle.
There are some things you don’t want to leave in your car, but sometimes it’s the best place you have. Every year more than 9 million property crimes take place in the USA. That’s 1 every 3.5 seconds. I’ve been on that list myself. I wanted to do more just shake my head at another statistic. So, I’m developing this safe. Right now only one exists but we’re hoping to change that.
This project transforms your spare tire into a locking safe. As shown, It provides a 4” x 12” round space for your valuables. I designed it around a spare tire because it already has unused space and it is "out of sight, out of mind". It also gives more function to an item which is normally only used in emergencies. Please see "Risks and Challenges" For a legal note.
As I went about the prototype I thought a lot about the qualities of a good design. I began to notice circular shapes more often. You’d be surprised how often a circle shows up in design. Whether it’s a volume knob, drinking glass, or power steering pump, it’s just a few of the many places you’ll find one. Keeping that in mind helped me along the way.
Why we need you.
There are a lot of design points we need to test and finalize. Your opinion matters to us. Right now this is where we're at. As this project moves along we’ll ask you what you think. We’ll take your input and make design changes to accommodate our backer’s general preference. Every complete prototype has a cost and we expect to go through a few before we're finished. Additionally, to keep the cost reasonable, we must have a minimum order of 50 units.
Here are a few items we need feedback on.
- Different sizes.
- Different trunk mounting methods.
- Coatings (paint, powder coat, rubberized coating).
- Flush mounting the lock.
- Handle design.
- Material thickness.
- Summer heat.
- Quiet operation.
Who we are.
At the beginning of 2013 I thought up the Fish Bone Knotless Gear tie. Together with my brother Eldrick and the support of our backers the idea went from a wire coat hanger to a computer engineered, laser cut reality. You can check out the projects we did by clicking on my profile. What an experience!
Since then Eldrick and I have created Out-Tek. Out-Tek is the beginnings of an outdoor goods company. Our goal is to continue developing equipment that goes on the move with you. So whether you’re on your way to the gym or going to Yosemite, we’ll have something for you.
Risks and challenges
Your opinion matters to us. As this project moves along we’ll ask you what you think. We’ll take your input and make design changes to accommodate our backer’s general preference. That being said we won’t be able to please everyone 100% of the time. There won’t be any radical changes, but it’s very possible the final product will have modifications when all is said and done. For example what the final handle looks like is up in the air. Any changes we make are intended to improve what arrives at your doorstep based on your feedback.
Doing major production runs involve working with manufacturers that are not open to the general public. There are lead times to getting large amounts of materials on top of waiting in line for production. We've taken this into consideration. We hope to ship everything sooner but delays are possible with material availability, production lead times, and getting the product right. Getting the product right is a major factor. Every iteration requires time for redesign, fabrication, shipping, and testing.
This is our project schedule though we hope to ship sooner. We'll keep you updated every step of they way.
2 weeks: Processing and Funds transfer.
12 weeks: Product development.
8 weeks: Production.
4 weeks: Shipping.
Due to the size, weight, and cost of this item we are only able to ship once per backer (USPS). We will be including "Signature Required" service for domestic pledges & insurance on international pledges. Please make sure you provide a correct and reliable address for shipping. We will provide you a tracking number to follow your package.
Legal Note: There are jurisdictions which have hidden compartment laws. Often the deciding factor is your intent with the compartment. All law enforcement officers are trained in vehicle searches. Locating this would be routine for them. If you use this or any compartment to conceal a controlled substance (even empty a K-9 will alert on it) you may be the winner of an extra felony charge. You are responsible for complying with your local laws. For an example please see California Health and Safety Code Section 11366.8Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
