Featuring four saxes, drums and bass, a cleverly anti-catatonic cantilever across the world's musical spectrum!
We aim to promote the release of our fourth studio CD Chance Episodes (on Cuneiform Records) with live performances in several cities in the eastern U.S. The success of this Kickstarter campaign will dictate whether we can extend the touring to beyond those points already on the itinerary.
All money raised goes toward defraying the following costs: van rental, fuel and insurance, lodging, publicity, postage, rental fees, artist fees and per diems. But this campaign also is about bringing more visibility to the project... so no donation is too little, especially if accompanied by your sharing the link with 10 close friends on social networks or - gasp - word of mouth. Enjoy the video, and also check out our pages on Facebook, Reverb Nation and deadcatbounce.org - Like us, join the mail list, and help book us in a city near you by asking for us at your favorite venue! Promoters can also find us on Sonicbids and Gig Maven.
More details are posted on these sites, but our current itinerary includes:
Ryles - Cambridge MA 10.4.11
Bela Dubby - Cleveland OH 10.20.11
Edgefest at Kerrytown Concert House - Ann Arbor MI 10.21.11
Heaven Gallery - Chicago IL 10.22.11
Audio for the Arts - Madison WI 10.23.11
U. Northern Iowa - Cedar Falls IA 10.25.11
The Sugar Maple - Milwaukee WI 10.27.11
The Stone - NYC 11.25.11
While we are keeping our fundraising goal to a minimum to "hedge our bets" and attain some goal, however modest, that doesn't mean we couldn't use four times that amount (a tour even like the abbreviated one above can easily run $5K or more). The dates scheduled will happen but we need a more sustainable income stream rather than simply borrowing and mortgaging our futures, and Kickstarter is a great interface toward making that possible. So if you see us near our goal and are on the fence, just know that going way past it still will not make us rich - just on the road toward more sustainability.
Presciently stripped from the headlines, the term dead cat bounce denotes a small, brief recovery in the price of a declining stock. To the artists in Dead Cat Bounce, it signifies one’s dedication to creative rebirth and renewal even as times, traditions and masters move on.
Several band members proudly co-habitate with the feline species and are staunch advocates of animal rights. We feel sometimes that art can be an art-ful play on words that transcends its literal meaning. Engage Dead Cat Powers!
To our knowledge there is at least one current and one now defunct rock band publicly out there with the same name - and an Irish comedy troupe. If it helps you decide - we were the first of these, dating back to 1998... but a lack of funds and a decidedly anti-litigious attitude prevented us from trademarking the name. We also settled for a .org URL because .com and .net were taken (the latter, inexplicably, owned by a Christian missionary). Perhaps .biz is better?
At any rate, we think this all points to our indifference to Western corporatism and competition, yet our simultaneous dependence on it in order to survive. All these Dead Cat Bounces CAN co-exist (we borrowed the term after all), and you are free to choose all of them to suit your daily needs!
We didn't go deep into the economics in the video - so not to bore the mainstream with the petty details of the non-profitability of the industry model for music such as ours - but suffice it to say it's not easy getting our six guys out on the road... but not for lack of desire! Even if there's a fan base or media outlet in some small market out west supporting DCB, that may not mean there's a promoter/venue willing to take us on - and vice-versa. And the travel costs in recent years have skyrocketed.... van rental, insurance, lodging, artist fees, per diems and publicity - not to mention the already swallowed costs of producing the album itself - have proven formidable deterrents to a healthy touring lifestyle.
But we're excited for this short run in October and the Kickstarter campaign is precisely to enable us to do more... in fact, with not only your support but also your feedback, we may better gauge what towns/markets we should target next. Ultimately we still feel our biggest connection with audiences occurs on the live stage, and we appreciate all your support in helping make that a reality.
Four saxes pitted against drums and bass, with no guitar or keys? Sounds pretty top-heavy, don't it? Give the music a chance, you'll find a lot of versatility in what all those voices can do, independently and in consort. There's enough there to be harmonically interesting, but the sound space can easily open up and players play freely without constant chord pounding. Each sax player has a unique tone and voice, a few double on flutes/clarinets and such, and Bill and Dave hold down the rhythm with enough fire to "occasionally make you forget that all the music comes from these same six guys." (Neil Tesser, Chicago Reader - Critic's Choice)
I (Matt) personally love to sing, and do so in other projects, but not this one - except for one encore number that's more of a Mingus-invoking stomp-shout. Ultimately the saxes ARE the voices in DCB, and we feel that - given a chance - the abstraction of the notes themselves, disembodied from words, can provide succor and escape to those suffering in these hard economic times.
