Hello and welcome to d20, Hertfordshire’s first board game cafe!
Our quest is to create the perfect environment for gamers, where you can stop by for a drink, visit for some great food and stay for the amazing games. Come in and browse from our expansive library of board games, where our team will be on hand to not only recommend the ideal game to play, but take the time to teach it to you too. We will be hosting regular events, including tournaments and themed evenings, as well as team building and social events, to create a friendly gaming community residing in the heart of Watford town centre.
How will it work?
Like other coffee shops, you can simply come in to relax and enjoy our selection of food, coffee and alcohol. If you’d like to use our board game library, there will be a cover charge of £5 (reduced to £3.50 with a food/drink order, or concessions). Only want to play board games? That’s OK too, you can just pay £5 for use of our library. We will also offer Kickstarter memberships to reduce the cost of food, drink and board game play!
What kind of things can I eat / drink / play?
Our menu will include a range of made-to-order sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes, salads, and locally sourced pastries and cakes. We will have plenty of food options available, with choices suitable for all dietary needs. There will be a selection of gourmet coffees, teas and soft drinks, as well as selected beers, ciders and wines. With regards to board games – we hope to have all the board games you can think of! With a starting library of at least 400 board games, there will be a game for everyone. From old classics, family favourites, heavy strategy and new releases, the hard part is deciding which game to play first!
What stage is d20 at and why does it need Kickstarter?
Planning for d20 started in early January 2016. We have consulted with business advisors, applied for and received loans, attended courses for food hygiene, first aid and alcohol licences, searched for suppliers and most importantly, found our location. Our plan is to open by early 2017. We want d20 to be the best board game cafe there is and need your support for complete renovation. We want our cafe to look and feel good, and to make your stay as comfortable and as fun as possible. Through Kickstarter we not only hope to get funded, but also hope to create a community of customers before we open our doors, whilst giving our fans updates and rewards for their support.
Where will d20 be?
d20 will be opening in Watford, Hertfordshire, 11 minutes from the M25 (J21a) and 8 minutes from the M1 (J5). The location boasts numerous parking options and easy public transport accessibility. We are less than a 10 minute walk from either Watford High Street or Watford Junction stations, the latter being only a 20 minute train ride from Euston, London.
Meet The Team
In addition to the pledge levels, we are also able to offer add-ons. If you'd like to sponsor a small card game, a medium/large board game, or purchase a t-shirt in addition to your pledge, simply add the amount to your total pledge.
Merchandise is available to pick up on your first visit to the cafe. If you'd like anything to be shipped instead, please add the P&P cost to your pledge (£4 for UK, £6 international).
At this stage you do not need to select which add-on you want; when the project has finished we will send out a survey asking what you pledged for, and for any shipping details.
For example, if you pledged to "Name a Table" worth £55 but you also want to purchase an adult T-shirt, and have the T-shirt posted within the UK, add up all the totals (£55 + £15 + £4 = £74) and pledge the total amount of £74.
Risks and challenges
As with any starting business, risks and challenges are a part of the adventure. Delays are always a risk from a variety of sources such as suppliers and renovations, all of which we aim to mitigate their effect on our project. Should the worst happen and the opening date is pushed back, we will notify all of our backers personally with regular updates, where you can also follow the renovation process.
Collectively, team d20 have food industry experience and have run a small business, but admittedly nothing quite to this scale. We have thoroughly planned everything to the last detail with the help of business advisors, to try and ensure we plug any gaps in knowledge and experience. We are positive our passion for the board game and food industry will drive us to succeed in our business venture.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
