Growing the sustainable food movement through innovation, education, advocacy, and fresh local hydroponic food production!
Living in the city has its advantages – access to shows, festivals, various events, and unique cultural activities. However, access to fresh, local, sustainably grown produce is non-existent. Urban Hydro was created to fill this void.
Urban Hydro Project is an urban hydroponic farm that provides fresh, local food YEAR ROUND to people in the Nashville community. We grow lettuces, tomatoes, herbs, and other leafy greens. Here's the catch...we're currently only using a quarter of our grow room.
In order to maximize the growth potential of the room and increase our production capabilities, we're going to need to invest in some new equipment. This will easily allow us to more than quadruple our current production level. Indoor hydroponic farming requires us to monitor and control a wide variety of environmental factors to achieve optimal growth potential of our plants. The funding we receive through this campaign will help us to purchase the necessary devices to more accurately control these factors and grow more plants more efficiently, while allowing us to serve even more people in our community.
I have been a hobby hydroponic grower for years now, fascinated and inspired by the idea of being able to grow my own food in my downtown windows. I’ve built several of my own 'window farms' and recently purchased a manufactured window farm through another Kickstarter campaign.
The Grow Room:
Over the past several months, I've expanded this passion for producing fresh, local and sustainably grown food to a 135 SF utility room on the roof of my downtown Nashville condominium. This space was unused and underutilized. After many hours of sweat equity, a friend and I were able to create a 12' tall frame in the room for hanging lights, trellising plants and future vertical shelving.
Why We Need Your Help:
In order to grow more produce so that we can reach out to more members of our community, we need to buy more equipment to expand our grow room. By contributing to Urban Hydro, you will help us more tha quadruple our production and ensure that many more Nashvillians have access to fresh, local produce!
Thank you so much for supporting our efforts to spread the sustainable food movement and provide more people with fresh, local food year round!!!!!!
Our rewards will make GREAT Christmas presents. We will email you a print out that you can wrap and give with information about Urban Hydro Project and a description of the award you purchased as a gift. If you would like to give a reward as a gift, please email us after you donate so that we can email you the voucher in a timely manner!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Running a 135 SF grow room is tricky! There are so many factors that must be controlled, and learning what to adjust is critical to ensuring that plants mature on time and at premium quality for our customers.
The past several years of hydroponic experience have given me the knowledge of how to handle these challenges. However, every grow room behaves differently, and adding more plants to the equation changes the entire ecosystem.
I'm excited about the challenge of creating the perfect ecosystem as the grow room expands, thanks to your help!
