Are you a board game enthusiast, but don’t have friends interested in rolling some dice? Are you sick of luring people to your house with food just so you’ll have a game group to play with? Well lure no more, Board Buddies is here!
Board Buddies was born out of a desire to create a free and interactive web app for iOS and Android that would allow users to host and join in on board gaming events in their community. As avid board game lovers, we always found it a challenge to find local people playing our favorite board games, or that wanted to try new ones that interested us. With the Board Buddies app, you’ll be able to search for upcoming board game events in your city, create your own event with a game of your choosing, or ask to join an ongoing game event and become a regular player in their crew.
Our team can't make this dream a reality without your help. If you love board games as much as we do and want to become a buddy, please pledge your support so we can bring this project to life.
To use our app, first you would create a profile, by logging in through you Facebook or Google account, then type in the name of the board game that you want to play. You can find already created events in the “Search” tab of the app and from there further refine the events by filtering by date and location. Of course, all of your favourite game variations, expansions, rule sets, and versions will all be represented in the app as well.
After this, you’ll be presented with a list of events near you who are still searching for players for that particular game. You’ll be able to see who the host is, and how many attendees have RSVP’d. With our app, it’s super easy to join games and make new friends in your community!
This app is completely free and will be available to everyone online once launched. The expected launch date is May 2018 for Android, with iOS following shortly after, based on the apple certification process.
Risks and challenges
Every Kickstarter project assumes a measure of risks and challenges, and we would be lying if we said there were no potential pitfalls in our way.
As students, we recognize that building this project requires a steep learning curve.
This is the first real-world application that we’ve ever built together, and there are a few new technologies that we need to work out in order to meet these specific requirements:
Databases to hold user and board game data
Building for Android and Web App, with future plans for iOS
Scalable code on the app to allow for a quick expansion and feature additions.
Some other technical issues we’ve thought about are:
- The app population being too spread out geographically to form groups. However, if we implement a “matchmaking” feature to play board games online, this would help counter this issue.
- App optimization and load times for the web app. One of our stretch goals is to build a native app to solve this.
- Slow internet connections would be an issue as there are a lot of database queries. This would not be an issue on Wifi, or if a native app is created.
Despite these technical challenges, our team is committed to pulling together and seeing this project through. We believe the tools we’ve chosen are the right choice for this project, and we don’t plan on letting a few roadblocks stop us. Each of us is there to help each other move forward.
Finally, as with any Kickstarter project, there are always business issues to think about (ex. what to do if the company scales in the event that our kickstarter campaign succeeds, or not having enough money to continue updating the app after it has launched). Luckily, we have an incredible team of experienced instructors in our school who have guided us and will continue to point us in the right direction.
