I'm writing a book.
Why? Because I think this book can help you. After six years of blogging about how to make your life better (and numerous folks asking for a book), I finally have the time to write a book, design it, print it, and get it into your hands. All I need now is the money to make this project happen.
Many of you are familiar with my work at Words With Lisbeth. I write about life, love, exercise, and how we all can become better people. I'm constantly searching for the light in what sometimes can be a dark world, and I can help you find it too. That's how I came to write posts like these:
- "How to Become an Overnight Success"
- "Don't Wait"
- "One Woman's Request"
- "For Those Who Think All is Lost"
- "Perfection is Not Reality"
"The World of What Could Be"
- "Never Beg"
- "There Will Come a Day"
- "Be Brave"
This isn't a how-to book as much as it's an inspirational book that will help you get yourself to where you need to go. Life isn't always easy, but if you get your head in the right space, it can be easier than you've been making it. Life can be glorious and you can be a success. But it all starts with effort—and with choices, like I outlined in "Happiness is a Choice"—and with understanding, like the understanding we need to have with our special kids, whom I wrote about in "Homework."
Why am I the best person to write this book?
Because I know how you feel. Thousands of startled readers have written to me, asking, "How could you possibly have known how I felt?" I know because I have the same feelings and I've been around this old world a time or two. (Check out my bio.) The only difference between you and me is that I have a gift to tell our stories in clear and beautiful language. I've been studying and refining this skill my entire life. (Hornblowing alert: I studied English at Vassar and have a Master's Degree in the Humanities.) I want to use my skills so that we all can lead better lives. That's why I'm calling this book "Be Better": because I want you to be better. And I can help get you there.
What's in this book?
25 of my best essays over the years plus 25 new and exclusive-to-this-project essays.
This will be a book that you can put on your nightstand, toss into your gym bag, or place on your coffee table. You'll be able to give it to a friend who needs some encouragement, or to a loved one who just doesn't understand why you do what you do. And you'll find yourself underlining special passages and dog-earing favorite pages because these words mean something to you. When the world goes dark, this book can help you find your light.
Because that's what it's going to take to get this project off the ground: to compile the book, get it designed and uploaded, then printed and shipped to all of you. (Keep in mind that Kickstarter and Amazon fees will take 8-10% of funding right off the top.) But, the truth is that I'm not looking to make money off this project as much as I am looking to get these words into your hands. I want to help you get better now, not later.
What happens if we surpass the project goal?
If we're lucky enough to pass the goals and head into the stretch goals, that means I can hire a photographer, and then a designer, maybe even add some original artwork by a real artist. More donations mean better quality, pure and simple. And if we reach pie-in-the-sky levels, I might be able to start on the next book right away. I'd love for this Be Better book to grow into a larger Big Better Project that changes even more lives. This is the start. Join me. And thank you.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges to completing this project are few. Some of the essays are already written, and I'm in the process of writing the remainder of them. Then, it's a matter of selecting photography and establishing the design of the book, then laying it out and getting it to the printer. My goal is to get books in hand for the Christmas season, so you're all ready to start 2015 with energy and heart!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Sadly, no book is published. Everyone gets their money back. That's just the way Kickstarter works. It's an all or nothing deal. But there's good news! We're over 35% funded. So we can reach our goal and get this project funded! How so? With your help.
Tell everyone you know. And I mean everyone. Share this link. Share a post from Words With Lisbeth AND this link. Tell your friends, tell your cousin, tell your gym buddies. Tell them all twice, or until they start making you do burpees. You can tell your dog too (I tell mine everything) but don't expect them to contribute. Until dogs get poseable thumbs, they have a hard time navigating through Kickstarter and over to Amazon. Well, actually, that's incorrect. I should have said until dogs have a good credit history, they have a hard time buying things on the internet. I mean, nobody knows you're a dog on the internet, but they do know if your credit card is not valid.
This might be a stupid question, but you used to work for CrossFit HQ. Can I get in trouble with them for supporting you?
1.) It's not a stupid question, and I'm happy to answer it!
2.) I left CrossFit HQ on good terms. You won't hear me say anything bad about CFHQ, and you should never hear them say anything bad about me. So, feel super-free to back my project! They really don't care if you do or you don't. But I care -- a LOT! We're all busy working on our own stuff. Live and let live, you know?
Yes! Stay tuned over the next 8 days as we add a few special new levels. And, remember, it's easy to change your reward choice if you wish to do so. Just log in and click "Manage My Pledge." Thanks!
Let me explain!
1.) This book is going to be self-published. That means I need the money to write, edit, format the book, hire a photographer, and physically publish the book at a printing company. It will look just like a regular book you buy in the bookstore (or on Amazon) but instead of a publishing house in NYC making that happen, I AM going to make it all happen, with the help of other experts.
2.) That's where Kickstarter comes in. By backing this project (pledging support) then I will have the funding to publish this book. And, in return, you get the reward level you choose -- whether it's the softcover or the hardcover version, a deck of motivational postcards, coffee with me, etc.
3.) Does that make sense? Thanks for reading! If you have any other questions, please ask!
