What we are about:
Sleepy Owl Brewery is dedicated to consistently providing the highest quality, full-flavored, handcrafted, American and European style malted beverages to the community of Kingsport, TN and areas of the Tri-Cities in Northeast Tennessee. We will focus solely on the community, providing beer lovers the freshest, highest quality beer, beer that the community wants to drink and call their own. We will always retain friendly relationships with other regional breweries, distributors and restaurants. We will only create our hand crafted beer with the highest quality of ingredients, much of which come from our neighbors in North Carolina and much of which are organic. We promise a friendly, safe, and enjoyable environment to sit back and enjoy the great nectar of malted concoctions.
Progress, and where we are now:
Up until now we have paid for everything with cash, and have a great nano brewery that is ready for licensing. We have a 1 barrel brew system, 4 barrels worth of serving tanks and fermenters, and a cozy tasting room to enjoy our libations. We have renovated the end of 151 East Main Street, the old train depot, and have turned it in to a warm, rustic venue to hang out in, listen to live music, and dine on local food brought in by restaurants and food trucks.
Raising $25,000 will let us expand the interior space, doubling our size, purchase larger vessels to provide a continuous flow of beer, purchase kegs to begin distributing quicker, and finish building out our tasting room with furniture. We really want Sleepy Owl Brewery to be a great place for friends, families, and kids.
One thing that will set us apart from other breweries will be to offer old fashioned, hand made root beer, perfect for the youngster in all of us. We also look to partner with local restaurants to offer food on premises, along with food trucks.

Dara’s Pale Ale:

Dara’s Pale Ale is an easy drinking pale ale, pleasantly hopped with a balance of sweet citrus aroma. The name Dara derives from my late mother, Brenda Dara. Much like Dara’s Pale Ale, my mother was a pale skinned, red headed, Irish lady who was a lot stronger than she looked. At 5.5%, Dara’s will quickly go get a switch from a hickory tree and wear you out. Non hop-heads can consider Dara’s to be a “Gateway to IPA”.
Mayford’s Appalachian Imperial IPA:

Mayford’s Appalachian India Pale Ale (IPA) is a bold statement from a mustache clad Irishman. Named after my late father, Larry Mayford, this brew will sneak up on you with a 2×4 and smack you in the jaw. Heavily hopped, wonderfully malted with local WNC grains, and an aroma that will make you want to stand on the South Holston River and pull in rainbows all day long.

- Hops: Crystal, East Kent Goldings, Liberty, & Willamette
- Malt: Riverbend (WNC) Heritage, Maris Otter Pale, White Wheat, Chocolate, Black Patent, & Caramel Malt
To date the most popular beer that I have is the Hickory Tree American Brown Ale. An a-typical American Brown that is darker, smokier, smoother, and keg emptier than all other brews. Perfectly balanced with WNC malt with a touch of Maris Otter for bread, and Chocolate + Black Patent for that grab you by the neck flavor. A thick head that sticks to the pint glass, disappearing as you pour another. Named after an area in Northeast Tennessee where my family settled long ago and where my father is buried in a small graveyard over looking the South Holston River and Mountains. Much like the people of Hickory Tree, this ABA will treat you well, as long as you respect it.
Heathereen’s Foreign Extra Stout:
- ABV: 6.0%
- ABW: 4.7%
- IBU: 42.7
- OG: 1.065
- SRM: 40.7
- Hops: Fuggles
- Malt: Maris Otter Pale, Chocolate, Roasted Barley, Caramel Malt, & Special Roast.
Back in the early 90′s when I started dating the mrs, my dad quickly began picking on her. It didn’t take long for her to start biting back, throwing out terms like Mayforoni, the Telerific Treat…referring to dad’s middle name, Mayford, which he despised and him being Post Master of Telford, TN. In retaliation he called her “Heathereen”, after what was then his favorite song, “Glycerine”, by Bush. He would even sing “Heathereen” to the tune of “Glycerine”. Battles continued for years over hats, cassette tapes of Fleetwood Mac and Heather making fun of his loving Wynonna Judd, as awful as that sounds. Either way, Heathereen is a term that will stay with us forever.
About the team:
Brian Connatser: Born and raised in Northeast Tennessee, Brian is a lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities. Born in 1974, to Larry (US Navy and Vietnam War Veteran) and Brenda Connatser, Brian grew up in Blountville, TN before moving to Bristol, TN in 1986. Brian attended Blountville Elementary, Blountville Middle, and is a 1992 graduate of Sullivan Central High School. Brian was a leader early, earning the Arrow of Light from Cub Scout Pack 215 and Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 215 of Blountville, TN.
After high school Brian attended East Tennessee State University (ETSU), graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Engineering in 1999 and a Masters of Science in Engineering in 2000, also earning Dean’s List with a 4.0 during his graduate studies. From 1999 to 2000 Brian worked as a Graduate student, full time as a Software Engineer and part time as an Adjunct Professor at ETSU. Since college Brian has worked as a Senior Software Engineer for clients such as Disney, Victorinox, Eastman Chemical Company, Proctor and Gamble, Shure, Lear, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital and more. Brian’s technical background, process oriented attitude and experience in delivering an incredibly polished product proves he can make Sleepy Owl Brewery a success.
Heather Connatser: Born in Bristol, TN to Gary and Vicki Hopkins, Heather attended Akard Elementary, Blountville Middle and is a 1995 graduate of Sullivan Central High School. Heather also attended East Tennessee State University and worked as the Head Teller for Highlands Union Bank from 1999 to 2005, leaving to start life as a homemaker after the birth of their first son, Brady. Since then Heather has been a stay at home mom of two boys, Brady and Dylan, keeping them on track with homeschooling since 2010.
Heather’s ability to homeschool, be a homemaker and years of banking experience proves that she can also make Sleepy Owl Brewery a success.

Any person that donates to this project can remain anonymous about the amount invested. Before releasing any information about winners, VIP lists, etc., we will notify each and every supporter to ask if it is ok for us to list your name outside of Kickstarter. Kickstarter does not have a policy in place to protect names, but your amount will not be shown.
Risks and challenges
Based on the fact that we already have a location, a 1 BBL brew system in place, and awesome support from friends, family, and a large fan base, risk is minimal. The funding that we are seeking is to expand our existing presence, increase our barrel capacity, purchase more kegs, and expand our tasting room to allow us to have more foot traffic and a dedicated area for live music.
