At its core, Kickstarted is about more than the creation of a crowdfunded economy. It’s about the passionate, driven and dedicated people who are forging the future of creativity and entrepreneurship. These dreamers have put everything on the line – their futures, reputations, social equity, even their souls – hoping that the crowd will believe in them and their ideas.

Update: We're adding new interviews to our schedule everyday. In the next few months we plan on interviewing Erik Dahlman of Albino Dragon, Antony Evans of Glowing Plant, The O'Neals from Brotherwise Games, Jeremy Snead from Video Game: the Movie, Gabe Durham of Boss Fight Books, Jamey Stegmaier of Euphoria and many, many more.
In this film, we follow a few of these creators’ remarkable stories from start to finish as they rally their communities, raise funds and then face the unparalleled pressure of delivering something that lives up to their own, and the crowd’s, expectations. As these inspiring journeys unfold, the film will feature exclusive interviews and insights from crowdfunding leaders and experts to help paint the big picture of this crowd-powered movement. Of course, it will also explore our own crowdfunding story as we ask you to help us achieve our dream: to make a documentary film about the creative revolution.
Kickstarted is not affiliated with or endorsed by Kickstarter. It is an independent documentary about crowdfunding and the creators using it. Our goal is to tell the personal stories of crowdfunding and to present an unbiased look at the future of this exciting new model.
Join Our Community and Allow Us To Finish The First Film About, For and By The Crowd
Kickstarted has been in production for over a year. We have spent countless hours researching, developing and filming with crowdfunding newsmakers like Zach Braff, Amanda Palmer, Maxwell Salzberg, Lisa Fetterman, John Vanderslice, Brian Fargo and many more. We’ve taken this film as far as we can with our own resources and now need your help to complete it. In making a documentary about crowdfunding, we are going to harness the power of the crowd in every way we can. That includes:
Crowdfunding the film. Our Kickstarter campaign is the first step. Your contributions today will help us fund the remaining production of the film and release it early next year.
Crowdsourcing our team. We are going to invite the community to join our production team and contribute music, graphics and even video. We can’t tell this story alone.
Crowdsourcing our talent. Kickstarted will feature the best crowdfunding stories, and we want our backers to help us discover them. We will have an open forum for our backers to share their own projects – or just ones they love – for potential inclusion in the movie.
Our Kickstarter goal of $85,000 will allow us to finish filming and help cover our expenses including pay for our crew, equipment rentals, editing, music and graphics. Below is a breakdown of how the pledge money will be spent.
Remember: Kickstarter is all or nothing, so if we don't meet our goal we get nothing and your pledges won’t go through.
Of course, $85,000 is the bare minimum. Every penny raised beyond that goal will go back into the film and be used to create more content. With additional funding we can dramatically expand our scope, film in more locations, with more people, license more music, add animation, better graphics and much more.
Finally, in success, we want to give back to the crowdfunding community. We are a participating member in Kicking It Forward and pledge to give 5% of any profits back to other crowdfunding projects.
We have awesome rewards lined up to help spread the Kickstarted love including a downloadable copy of the film (our most popular reward at $25), a collector’s edition DVD complete with hours of extra features, tickets to our premiere party and producer’s credits. We also have cool crowdfunding swag to show off your status as a key part of this exciting cultural and economic revolution.
Each person that contributes – even if it’s just a couple of dollars – joins our growing community of crowdfunding enthusiasts. Every contributor will have exclusive access to the production blog and our Digital Backer Kit. Throughout production and beyond, we will update the kit to provide information and content about the world of crowdfunding. It will include a white paper on how best to launch your own crowdfunding campaign, advice from prominent crowdfunding creators and experts, and exclusive news about upcoming projects. We will also curate a series of live Q&As with crowdfunding experts and creators.
Backers will also get first access to complete copies of all of our crowdfunding interviews and extra content. You can check out the videos below and our YouTube page here to see a few we’ve already posted.
Our goal is to submit the final version of the feature into festivals early in 2014, as well as to screen it at relevant events. Our backers will get the digital download and DVD versions of the film around the same time. From there, we will look to distribute the movie theatrically and through digital download.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PLEDGE.
Please pass on the trailer and tell your friends about the project. We hope to get a lot of people to see this film, hear these stories and learn more about the crowdfunding revolution. Many thanks!

Risks and challenges
We face the same challenges as any film currently in production, which include expensive equipment losses, data destruction or worse. Still, we’ve been at this for many months already and have a ton of footage in the can. We just need to take those last few steps. Barring a catastrophe or the end of the world, we will make this film.
The real 'risk' is that the scope, tone or projected timeline of the project could change. That's the nature of documentary filmmaking. We don't have a set opinion on crowdfunding that we are out to prove (which would be easy). We have hypotheses that we want to explore, and that might evolve. More importantly, we can't say for certain where the personal stories of our crowdfunding subjects will take us. That's the exciting part, and we can't wait to share that with the world.
Regarding our rewards, it is our intention to deliver all the physical rewards (except the DVD) out to backers sometime over the summer. PLEASE NOTE: the final designs of the posters and tote bag are subject to change, although we will try to keep them similar. After that, our goal will be finish the film for January 2014 and release it to our backers. The premiere party and final delivery dates are subject to our production schedule, which may shift over the course of the next few months.
A little fine print:
For the consultations and the interview reward levels: we will do our best to do these in person but can make no guarantee. We will be filming throughout the summer, mostly in LA and hopefully beyond (think NYC, SF, Austin, Chicago). We will do our best to make our schedules align, but things are subject to change. We cannot cover any related travel costs.
If we do interview you, it will only be distributed if you sign the proper release forms. We will also have final cut on what is sent out to our backers and included in the film.
Making a documentary is a hard, complicated process. However, we are already in great shape and are all in to make an incredible film about this incredible movement. It's going to be an awesome journey, and we thank you in advance for helping to make it possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
