About

Most gamers would agree that having a dedicated gaming table is a greatly desired luxury. However, wanting a nice place to play board games and having the space and money for a dedicated game table are two very separate things. This table topper solves the issue of space and affordability by combining the portability of a card table with the important features of a full sized game table, all while keeping costs down at an affordable level.

When I got into gaming I tried several different table tops. First I played, probably like most people, at the kitchen table. This worked okay for a while but had its issues. 1. It's Too Big - People don't want to have to stand up and lean over the table to reach the board just in order to make a move. 2. It's Already Being Used -  A kitchen table is often used for other things, like eating. :) This means that if you set up a game before a meal you must then take it all down in order to use the table, or risk eating at one side of it and hoping that nobody spills anything that will damage the game on the other side. 3. It's too distracting - A kitchen table is quite often in the middle of all the action and noise of a house. I've got small children so if I'm going to try to concentrate on a game it is best if I can do so in another room where there are fewer distractions.

After the kitchen table I tried a simple card table in another room. - Too Small - This works fine for CARD games but not so fine for large sprawling games, of which I am most inclined to play. I soon found out that this was not enough space.

Then I tried a fold out table that reached maybe 4.5 feet in length but wasn't very wide. - Close but not Perfect - It worked okay for a while but where the seam was in the middle bulged a bit and caused some issues with certain games. Also, because of the way the legs and supports were attached, there was only just enough room for 4 people to squeeze in-between the legs and definitely no room at all for people on the ends of the table.

Since I  1. didn't have the money for a full sized game table, 2. didn't have the space for another table in the house, and 3. already owned a card table, I decided to simply build a new table top that would sit directly on my existing card table.

Success!  1. - Much Cheaper -  I was able to do it at a fraction of the cost of buying or even building a full table.  2. - Stores Flat - I am able to store it flat against the wall or under a bed when not in use.

3. - Leaves the Card Table Available -  I still have use of my card table for other occasions when I'm not gaming, which is why I own one in the first place.

Because this table top was so well received with my gaming group, and because I am confident that I can build as many as needed, I have decided to bring it to kickstarter to give other gamers the opportunity to have a bit of gaming luxury at a cost the average gamer can afford.

Materials

Fabric - In order to make the top look and feel as nice as the high end gaming tables out there, I am covering the main side with Bella Velvet fabric. This material is very durable and soft to the touch, perfect for a good gaming table. According to the manufacture it is described as follows:

A luxurious velvet using the latest innovation using microfiber technology. Bella is made with 100% pure micro denier polyester fiber, therefore having the durability and cleaning characteristics inherent with microfiber. Perfect for high traffic homes or commercial use.

Features:

Developed for easy spot cleaning and wash ability. Engineered for abrasion resistance. Passes 100,000 durable rubs on the Wyzenbeek test.

Of course there are other cheaper options out there for fabric but I feel that if I'm going to sell a product to someone else then I want it to be something that will last a very long time and will give no cause for concern. On my prototype table that we've been using for a while now, I used a common velveteen as I had read that it makes a good gaming surface. The truth is that it does work well, but I can see issues with wear in the not too distant future. It just isn't made to hold up as well so I couldn't put it out there for others to use.

Plywood - The plywood I used to ensure a good flat surface for playing on is 1/2" thick Baltic Birch. This material is often used in drawer construction as it is a higher grade of plywood than normal construction ply. There are no voids in it that would cause dips or soft spots like you may find in a cheap plywood. Also, the back side of it is finished with a very hard and durable finish made primarily for the inside of drawers and cabinets. Because of this it is a very smooth and excellent surface to play flicking style dexterity games on.

Hardwood - The perimeter of the table is surrounded in 1.5 inch thick solid Poplar hardwood. It is 3 inches wide and is contoured to slope down toward your lap in order to leave a comfortable ledge to rest your forearms on. Too many tables I see out there have a 90 degree outside corner and a flat top that over time starts to cause discomfort to the arms. I did not want a table edge that made me uncomfortable when playing at it for long periods of time.

Details

Dimensions - Overall, the outside dimensions are, 64.5"x43.5"x1.5".   The inside playing dimensions are 58.5"x37.5". This allows either a standard 34" card table or a larger 37" table to be used as the base.

This large play surface makes it possible to enjoy your favorite board game with the whole group...

One question I've been asked regarding the size is "but does it move around, or will it tip?"

The answer is simply No and Not easily. Even though it is light enough to pick up and move around at 37 lbs it is heavy enough to stay put when placed on a standard vinyl topped card table. The main sides of it where two people are sitting, only overhangs a few inches so there is almost no way to get it to tip on those edges. Also because there is a lip underneath, you can butt it directly up to the table edge so that one side is firm (useful if you have someone at the table who pushes against it a lot.) The ends of the table overhang approximately 15" from the edge of a card table but even with this there is still another  almost 50" of table left so it doesn't tip easily. It will support an average person leaning against it with both arms.  In our use of it on a weekly basis, we've never encountered any problems with movement.

Depth - Each side has a different depth.   What I would call the top, the fabric side, has a depth of 1/4". This keeps the game components from getting accidentally slid off the table while keeping the game comfortably level.

The smooth side of the table has a depth of 1/2" This extra depth helps to keep pieces flicked across the table from flying off the sides of the table and mysteriously disappearing on the floor somewhere.

I figured if I was building a flat table top, I might as well give it use on both sides. Why waste the perfect opportunity to build in a great functioning surface for dexterity games.

Weight - Overall this table top only weighs in at 37 lbs.  which means it is easy to move around either with the help of a friend, or by yourself.

Options

Because I am trying to keep costs and weight as low as possible, I am not offering any options for wood choices at this time. What I can offer is your choice of three different colors of Bella Velvet.

Just let me know once you've placed your order which color you would like on your table surface and I'll build it accordingly.

Shipping

Shipping will be $150 and will  be delivered via  UPS ground or FedEx ground. Both options are around 1 week delivery time to most places in the country. I am not currently offering shipping to Alaska or Hawaii but if you are interested in what that cost may be please let me know and I'll look into it for you.

If you live in the Southern California area and would like to pick it up locally here in Temecula, you can save the money in shipping and do just that.

Confidence

So why should you trust that I can deliver what I've promised.

1. I'm a licensed cabinet contractor here in California. This means that I've got plenty of experience delivering on what I've promised my customers. My company is built on word of mouth recommendations meaning if I don't deliver the best possible product in the time frame that I've promised I don't get more work, simple as that.

2. Since woodworking is literally my business, I've already got all the tools and know how to build and deliver this product as I've laid it out. I won't be hindered by one supplier or another. I won't be sourcing the work from overseas. It will all be built in house using materials that I source and on my own timeline. Most difficulties with kickstarter campaigns come from outside suppliers delaying projects or changing materials. I don't have any of those drawbacks.

3. I've already built it. I'm not selling you on an idea or just a sketch of what it could be. I have one already in use and it works great.

Risks and challenges

Of course with every project there are challenges. If I were to predict one for this project it would be the number of orders received. If I greatly exceed my initial goal I would need to hire on another helper to help me meet my deadline for shipping. Fortunately I've hired on people for various jobs in the past that I could call in to help if needed.
