Tombstone is an old west tabletop skirmish game for 2 players. We're releasing the book, available in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian (printed version only in English) plus over 110 new 32mm resin miniatures!
This Kickstarter is to put the project in action and to give us exact numbers of the book and miniatures ordered to aid in printing and production logistics.
Most of the work is done and ready to see below! The rules, translations (except Italian) and miniatures are all complete. All that's to be done is the final graphics layout of the book and miniature production.
Below you will find all the information you need in the following areas:
The Book: An overview of what's inside and some previews.
The Miniatures: Previews of all the miniatures and their various factions.
The Game: A look at the mechanics of the game itself.
The Campaign: Details of the actual campaign, pledging information, shipping, add ons, offers and how best to select what you want.
About us: Who we are, who worked on the project, our history.
You'll also find a FAQ section plus updates and comments where you can communicate and ask questions.
- The Book.
The book contains over 120 pages. The rules are done but we are still working on the final touches of the layout and some extra content, hence we don’t have an exact page count yet. The book contains everything you need to know to play the game. From introduction to basic gameplay rules, scenarios and encounters and perhaps most importantly the campaign section where you can build your posse and infamy over time. In this way games follow on from each other and gang members can be injured or die, gain new skills or weapons and new members can be recruited. At the back there’s a resource section. This contains all the extras you need to play such as tokens, roster sheets and markers. these will also be made available online. There’s also a quick reference section to help gameplay with essential charts and reminders.
The book contains stunning art throughout, catalogue pages of all the miniatures and loads of cool extras such as a building signs page, interior comic, newspaper, wanted posters and maps, scenic shots of gameplay to give you inspiration and idea for your gaming table and more.
The book is available in printed format in English and in PDF format in English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. All the translations have been done by native translators who are also gamers.
For the Kickstarter we’ve arranged the miniatures into their various factions. This consists of a leader (mounted and unmounted version) deputy, and three packs of 4 models. Of course which models you use as what in your gang is completely up to you! Any model can be mounted in Tombstone, of course its not practical to make mounted versions of every miniature so we’ve started with the leader which would be the most natural to give a horse. We will make the horses available as a separate pack allowing for conversions (these are also useful for gameplay as sometimes your model will unmount his horse). As an extra we’ll also add a mounted ‘conversion pack’. This will consist of a kit to make converting a model to mounted easier. We’ll also make a weapons sprue available too with sculpted on hands! (something people always ask for!)
What’s more the miniatures are very interchangeable. E.g many of the Lawmen miniatures could be used as Outlaws, equally there’s nothing to stop you using miniatures from any faction as part of yours, an Outlaw gang may very easily have a Mexican gang member, or Lawmen have someone from the 7th Cavalry. We even make an entire group of female gunslingers! These don’t form their own faction in the book (though they can if you want) but can be used as gang members in other factions. In other words the options and possibilities are endless, we are releasing over 110 new models in addition to the large existing range we have online.
What are they made of?
All the miniatures will be cast in resin using the same high quality method we use for all our models, cast in house by us. The sculptures are hand made, there are no digital renders here and the casting you see in the pictures is the same method and material as the ones you buy. (no cheaper alternatives made overseas).
Nearly all the miniatures are one piece castings (with the odd exception) meaning they just need attaching to the base!
For the purposes of the Kickstarter we've kept the titles of the various packs simple, e.g Leader, Deputy, pack 1 etc... In the book of course they have more appropriate titles.
Female Gunslingers: (Don't have their own faction in the book but can be added as you please)
Plus Tombstone dice set! These are the dice you will need to play sold in a handy set if you don't have already have them. Add £3.00 to your pledge to add the set.
Tombstone is an old west skirmish game for two players. Typically you will start with around 6-8 models in your posse, this will increase as you earn more funds and recruit more members. You can of course play one off games and start with as many or as few models as you like. The game is designed for our 32mm miniatures but any models from 25-40mm would work fine. We suggest playing on a 48”x 48” (4x4’) table, again this is a guide and you can play on any size you prefer.
As you choose which faction you will pay with (there are six: Lawmen, Outlaws, Mexicans, Natives, 7th Cavalry and Undead) you select different gang types and weapons within the starting money you have available. In this way you can tailor your gang from the start to suit your style. A small and well armed gang? Or lots of less skilful members? Each faction has different attributes and skills meaning they all play slightly differently.
The game works on an action point system (for those that played our Pirate game Cutlass! you will be familiar, but we have made many changes and improvements) There are no strict player turns as such. Each player has an equal number of points, how and when they are used forms a large part of the strategy of the game. They can also be used to ‘react’ and try and interfere with your opponent's actions.
Typical actions include; movement, shooting, re-loading, standing ready and special actions which are often specific to the scenario you are playing. Shooting forms a large part of the game as you can imagine! Many guns can ‘hip-shoot’ (fire more than one shot) and models can even fire more than one gun at a time! All this comes at the risk of using too many action points with less accuracy and also running out of ammo.. re-loading also takes action points and those are precious, being out of points while your opponent has lots will leave you open to the slaughter!
Once all actions are used there’s a special ‘recovery phase’ after which a new action total is rolled and play starts again. The winner of the game is determined by the specific encounter you are playing and the objectives within it. There are eight different encounters in the book but we encourage you to come up with your own scenarios and ideas.
Models use a specific dice as their stats in Tombstone and these can increase or decrease. These dice are then rolled against the opponents using the relevant chart in the game to determine the outcome of any action. For example one model might have a D4 as his shooting stat and another a D12, this means each player would roll that dice when resolving the action. Obviously this gives the player with the D12 a significant advantage but also allows for luck to play a part and the underdog to come out on top now and again. Various skills and weapons can also help and effect these rolls by giving you either bonus dice (roll extra and pick highest) or stat increase for that roll (e.g a player with D6 would roll a D8). The difficulty of what you’re doing also effects them, e.g firing lots of shots from a pistol at a target far away will reduce your dice roll in a significant way, where as a single shot from a rifle will have a higher chance of hitting. Again this forms part of the strategy of the game, the balance between less shots but more accuracy and wildly firing all your ammo and hoping for the best!
The campaign system is really the heart of Tombstone. Depending on the specific scenario and how your posse and gang members performed they can improve post game. This may involve a stat increase or new skill. Equally you can earn money to buy new weapons/equipment and recruits, in this way your gang grows and becomes more powerful making each new encounter more dramatic. On the flip side your gang members can also sustain injuries or die! Models may sustain permanent injuries resulting in stat decreases. There are also rules for models being captured and even quickdraw draw rules for one on one gunfights.
Tombstone is a fun game with endless possibilities!
We've tried to keep the pledge options and packs as simple as possible along with having options to get exactly which packs you want.
You'll see each pack photo has a simple title and price, this is useful if you're adding certain packs to a pledge or having a mix of packs.
On the right you'll see the various pledge options, you can only select one of these but you can add to your pledge amount accordingly to add extras should you wish. After the campaign a survey (or similar) will be sent out to find out exactly what you want. Of course these pledge options also make it easy if you want something simple like a complete faction or just the book.
Note all shipping is added at checkout/end of campaign, do not add it to your pledge amount (if applicable).
Mix and match: Use this if you're getting a mix of different packs from different factions. Just add up the total and enter that amount (shipping= £6 UK £10 ROW) E.g If you want a Native leader, Mexican deputy and the printed book = £35.

Printed Book £25. For the printed book in English. You can increase the pledge amount to add miniatures or add £25 to another pledge option to add the book. (shipping= £6 UK £10 ROW)
Complete faction £45: Use this for any complete faction. (equals: leader, mounted leader, deputy, and 3x four model packs). Yes you can choose from different factions as long as the make up is as above (as this option offers a small saving). Increase your pledge as needed to add more packs or the book etc..Entitles you to a free copy of the PDF book AND and free single miniature of your choice! (shipping= £6 UK £10 ROW)

You also get a free vulture miniature only available with this pledge and two free miniature options of your choice (2x any single model or mounted or pack of 4 models included)... and FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE! increase the pledge amount to add the book or extra packs or add ons. (Free shipping).
Adding to pledges: The various pledge options are good starting points as they offer a saving on buying separately, the higher the pledge the more the saving. You can of course add any pack or model by simply increasing your pledge. What's more you can take advantage of those offers when increasing your pledge. E.g If you wanted the 2 faction+book combo twice (i.e 4 factions/2 books) you would enter £210 total (£105 x 2). NOTE: with all pledges you only get the applicable free miniature/ pack offer once.
We try to keep things simple so shipping has two categories and flat rates regardless, meaning you'll know exactly what your shipping costs are!
Also note the highest pledge goes post free worldwide!
We are shipping from the United Kingdom. Therefor this project is EU friendly.
We've put December 2017 as the delivery date, in truth we hope to start shipping the first orders within a couple of months. If the project is very successful we've given this as a buffer to get everything out. Obviously once the campaign is over we will have a more accurate idea of this.
Offers and Add ons!
Below are some offers available and the various options that can be unlocked if certain funding levels are met.
The blacked out models mean those are characters in the book that will be sculpted and available if the relevant funding level is achieved.
Black Scorpion miniatures has been operational for over 11 years. We design, sculpt and produce our own miniatures. The company is run by miniatures sculptor Adam Clarke. Tombstone is our second book/game. The first, Cutlass! for our Pirate range was done with Tombstone in mind as a follow up. Well known designer Gav Thorpe wrote the mechanics for us with both systems in mind.
This project is the result of the work of many people:
Adam Clarke, Gav Thorpe, Africa Mir, Billy Toufexis, Craig Petersen, Matt Dixon, Georgie Harman, Tammy Nichols, Marcos Garcia, Samuel David, Simon Chiassai.
Risks and challenges
We produce all the miniatures in house and have over 11 years of successfully sending out orders all over the world. The book is complete, barring final layout touches. The translations are complete except Italian, these translations will require new layouts but I don't foresee those causing any delays. All the models are sculpted (except for a few possible add ons) and as we don't contract out to any outside sources for production we are in control of everything giving very low risk. We have even stockpiled large quantities of production materials for casting to mitigate any possible delays through suppliers. This is our second printed publication, meaning we have experience of bringing a printed book to market and dealing with printers.
Possible delays could come if the project achieves an extremely high level of funding. But as we know the rate at which we can produce miniatures an accurate estimate of any possible delays could be given.
Overall the risks are low and I have a very high confidence of successfully sending out all the pledges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
