Stretch Goal #1 - $20k - Full Kitchen Hood System
UPDATE: STRETCH GOAL REACHED!
Our current kitchen setup is great for making awesome sandwiches, salads, and some fun fried apps, but we lack the full hood system we need to really broaden our kitchen's capabilities. We want the Boards & Brews menu to be first class, and hitting $20k will get us to a point where we can put in the hood we need to do so.
Stretch Goal #2 - $25k - Custom Settlers Table!
You may have spotted the awesome custom Game of Thrones board game table featured in our project video. Here's a photo to jog your memory:
We hand routed and painted this beautiful table for one of our favorite games over the summer, and can't wait for all of you to enjoy it at the cafe. We want to keep creating awesome tabletops like this one so you can have truly unique gaming experiences at Boards & Brews.
If you help us reach our new $25k goal, we'll make another table custom built for Settlers of Catan, available for all to play at the cafe!
Stretch Goal #3 - $30k - +1 Privileges for Lifetime Memberships!
We've had way more support at the yearly and lifetime backer level than we anticipated, and we're thrilled so many people want to become members. One concern several people have had is that significant others will still have to pay the $5 gaming fee to play at Boards & Brews. We want to encourage couples to play games together, not discourage it, so if we hit $30k all yearly and lifetime memberships will come with free +1 privileges for spouses. (Bear in mind, this is not meant as a free guest pass for whoever may be joining you at the cafe at the time. It is intended for significant others and will be enforced as such.)
New Hampshire's First Board Game Cafe
Boards & Brews, New Hampshire’s first board game cafe, is coming to downtown Manchester! Our goal is to provide a friendly place for casual and experienced gamers to gather, eat, drink, and - of course - play games! The cafe will host a massive, ever-growing library of 600+ games, friendly staff to recommend and teach games, and delicious food, coffee, beer, and cocktails to enjoy while you play!
What Is A Board Game Cafe?
A board game cafe is a place for people to come together, eat, drink, and play games! Like most cafes, we will offer coffee, tea, salads, sandwiches, and other food. We'll even have a bar with rotating craft beer and cocktails. What really distinguishes us from typical cafes, however, is our extensive board game library and a staff of friendly and passionate gamers eager to help you find the perfect game.
Boards & Brews will be your place to play your favorite games with old friends, meet new people, and learn new and exciting games you may not encounter at your typical game night. To play games it will be five dollars a person. Conversely, not playing games means no game fee. The memberships cost after this Kickstarter has not been decided. We will most likely still offer them. Each month of any membership comes with a free guest pass.
Where is Boards & Brews?
Boards & Brews will be located at 941 Elm St. in the heart of downtown Manchester. Our location is ideal for students and professionals working downtown and the perfect stop for anyone looking to try something new while enjoying a night on Elm.
We were born and raised in Manchester and want to do something awesome in the city we love. Downtown Manchester is a vibrant place with lots of great dining options, but we aim to create something unlike anything it currently has to offer. Our goal is to create a friendly, welcoming gaming community on Elm that adds a whole new dimension to recreation and nightlife in the city.
The millyard's emergence as NH's tech hub, the city's large, growing student population, and the underserved population of tabletop gamers we play with at conventions and meetups throughout the state make it obvious that Manchester is ready for its own board game cafe.
What About Events?
Of course there will be events! Boards & Brews will always be a place where gamers of all experience levels can drop by, grab a game, and dive in. In addition, we plan to host a variety of weekly events to keep our community engaged and excited. Ideas for events include:
- Game Tournament Nights - Knock-out style tournaments where gamers can test their skills playing modern classics like Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Settlers of Catan, 7 Wonders, and more.
- Open Gaming Nights - Nights where guests will be especially encouraged to learn new games and meet new people. These will resemble your typical board game meetup night where people show up, find a group, and dive into a great game!
- Party Game Nights - Similar to our open gaming nights but for larger scale party games. Think 20-person games of Werewolf and other fun social games like The Resistance and Mafia.
- Game Release Parties - As game nerds, we’re going to do everything we can to get the latest and greatest games (“The New Hotness”, if you will) into the cafe. We’ll keep the community posted when exciting new games are added to our library and encourage everyone to come see what the hype is all about.
- Playtesting Nights/Game Designer Meetups - Monthly events for game designers to share their games, get feedback, and network with other designers
The recent explosion of tabletop gaming and the success of board cafes around the world have proven the demand for our concept, but starting a cafe is expensive! We are investing a significant amount of our own money to make our concept a reality, but we still need to raise more from the community in order to transform our location into the fun and exciting experience Manchester deserves.
Creating a vibrant community is incredibly important to us and will be vital to our success. We want the local Manchester community and the NH gaming community at large to feel like a real part of the cafe and to know that your feedback and support is invaluable. Kickstarter is the perfect way to create a business with community at its core and we invite all of you to hold us true to this mission.
Where Will Your Money Go?
We've been working hard for months to turn our Elm St. location into the perfect place to relax and play games with friends. That said, there's still a lot of work to be done. As a backer, your money will help us to finish transforming the cafe into a place we know you'll love. Specifically, your money will help us:
- Finish Renovations - Complete renovations at our Elm St. location and build a ramp that will make the cafe ADA compliant and accessible to all gamers
- Add Furniture - Purchase additional tables, chairs, and other furniture needed to make Boards & Brews a comfortable place to play games
- Install Draft Lines - Install 6-8 draft lines at our bar to make Boards & Brews an exciting place to enjoy a rotating, curated selection of local craft beer
- Improve our Kitchen - Expand the capabilities of our kitchen so we can bring you the best possible food and explore more creative menu offerings

Who Are We?
Keating Tufts - Owner/Operator
After attaining his associates degree in Organizational Leadership from Southern New Hampshire University, Keating Tufts began working for moving company Get It Gone, where he worked directly with the owner and gained firsthand experience running a small business. Keating's penchant for helping others, though, soon steered him away from the moving business and into a role as a home care provider for individuals with disabilities. In this role, Keating learned to use board games as a tool to bring his clients and friends together around the table.
As a 12-year partner and coach in NH’s Special Olympics program, Keating has extensive leadership experience he'll use to bring a strong sense of accountability and direction to Boards & Brews. He has traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada visiting board game cafes and is excited to bring the best parts of these cafes to Manchester.
Dave Casinghino - Owner/Operator
Dave Casinghino holds a degree from the Carroll School of Management at Boston College with concentrations in Computer Science, Information Systems, and Marketing. Since graduating, he has worked as a freelance web developer and as a software engineer at two startups in Manchester - Adored and Minim, Inc. He is excited to use his technology and marketing background to create a thriving online community for Boards & Brews.
Dave is also the cafe's resident beer and cocktail enthusiast and is determined to create a first-class bar at Boards & Brews.
First and foremost though, Dave is a passionate about board gaming, the Manchester community, and working to create a new and exciting space for gamers in the city.
Sam Friend - Kitchen Lead
Sam Friend joined the team to lead the Boards & Brews kitchen and coffee operations, ensuring our guests are well-fed and caffeinated! Sam is a foodie, advocate for sustainable food, and lover of all things coffee. She is especially passionate about accommodating special dietary restrictions, and is working hard to create a menu that is friendly to all types of diets and lifestyles. Sam's many years working at Whole Foods Market as a culinary demo specialist and coffee bar supervisor have helped her develop the skills, techniques, and knowledge that make her a valuable addition to the Boards & Brews squad!
Risks and challenges
Starting a small business, especially a restaurant, is risky. While we’ve been involved in a number of small businesses and startups in the past, we have no direct restaurant industry experience. To compensate for this, we've turned to our large network of friends in the Manchester restaurant industry and have utilized their advice and guidance in every stage of Boards & Brews’ development.
In addition to guidance from local industry professionals, we have extensively researched the board game cafe movement around the world and visited a number of these cafes throughout the U.S. and Canada. We've developed valuable relationships with several cafe owners generous enough to share lessons learned from their experiences launching and running board game cafes from the ground up. This mentorship and our passion for gaming make us confident in the Boards & Brews concept, our business plan, and our ability to execute on this plan to build a robust gaming community space in Manchester.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
