Xenonauts V19 Stable Release!

It's time for another update from the team busily working on Xenonauts! We have recently released V19 Stable of the game and have finished the process of porting the updates over to Mac and Linux uploading the game to Steam / Desura / Humble Store. These are all uploaded and should be authorised in the next 24 hours if they are not already available for download.

V19 Stable is basically three months of changes to the game rolled into a single large patch that has had much more testing than our usual updates, and should therefore be fairly stable (though it is still in beta and will not be completely bug-free).

This is a brief summary of the improvements made in V19 over V18:

  • Vastly improved game balance
  • Dramatically improved AI
  • Alien Base missions fully functional
  • All research descriptions written and edited
  • Various visual updates like a new world map, many more painted ground tiles, etc
  • Lots and lots of bugfixes

That only covers the changes at a very high level; the full changelog can be found here in a (very long) forum post. Things like balance and the AI are still being worked on, and there are still missing art assets that have not yet been completed.

However V19 was the first time someone sat down and worked on balance for several weeks and the result is something that feels much more like a "game" than it has before. It's still a bit rough around the edges, perhaps, but you can see the final shape starting to emerge.

We are presently working on V20. We are planning this to be the last update to the game that will include new features, and will be where we integrate the new interface, add all the maps, finish the AI, fix some problems with the game accuracy model etc. If all goes to plan, anything after V20 will simply be bugfixing and final balancing on the existing systems.

We are hoping to get the game by the end of the year. This is by no means a firm commitment, but it is the internal deadline we're working towards. The game has come together well over the past three months and if progress continues at this pace then completing the game in another three months is feasible provided nothing major goes wrong.

Regarding your Kickstarter rewards: we haven't forgotten about them and I apologise for the delay. The DVDs can be burned as soon as the game goes gold and we are currently working on the art book too. The latter has proved to be more work than anticipated and we're already pretty busy with the game itself, but we have promised it and so we will deliver.

Finally, I just wanted to say that the money raised from Kickstarter has been an immense help to the team. At the time I was confident we'd be able to finish the game even if our Kickstarter had failed, but the volume of work required in finishing the game has been mind-boggling. I strongly suspect we'd have had to cut some corners without the funding that you guys made available to us, so thanks once again to all that donated!

Most Golden of Hawks: Fantastic news, thanks! I'm definitely keen to play, and as a Linux guy, I'm really happy to have the game on Desura (most of my games library is there since they supported Linux years before Valve). So, thanks for that as well.

@SD - Hopefully everything will be authorised on Desura soon. It's all uploaded and we've sent them a reminder to do it.

I think V19 uses a proper wrapped but I don't know offhand. It's certainly something we'll be looking at for release anyway.

@Mike - our Paypal account is having a few issues so sadly not at the moment. Ask again when we do some more updates about the rewards and hopefully you'll be able to do so.

      @Alec - glad you're enjoying the game!

Congratulations, and thanks for the update!! I'm still plenty excited about the final game. :-D

First, I have one curiousity regarding Linux downloads on Desura... just checked the Desura standalone downloads list, and only the Windows version appears for me (no Mac or Linux versions are there for some reason). Am I doing something wrong?

Secondly, I recall that the Linux version was supposed to use an in-built wrapper (rather than requiring anybody's arbitrary local Wine version), but the last time I tried, back around ~V16, the launcher tried to run the game using a system installation of Wine (which I did not have installed). Will V19 use the in-built wrapper (so that everyone runs the same Wine which is tested to work properly) or will that come with V20?

This game is the only thing i play at the moment... I miss playing Starcraft 2, but this is just better. IN BETA! So thank you! And keep them updates coming. This is the true sequel to the best game ever made!

In the future i would be more than happy to support a Kickstarter for DLC, so we can get some more of the original stretch goals into the game, but first when the final game is out and has had a bit of shelf-time. Also a TFTD inspired expansion or sequel would be much loved :)

Going to enjoy this game quite a bit when it's finished, I'm sure. Thanks again for creating it and staying true to the inspirational materials.

Is there a possibility to bump up my pledge amount so that I can get the DVD?

Makes you appreciate what work Julian Gollop and his team did in olden times.

Woha! I almoust forgot about your game. Play it in september, met some bugs and deside to play later. Good job in any case!

If anyone is wondering whether the Mac / Linux versions are available on Steam - no, not yet. Until release arrives, please download Mac / Linux versions from either Desura or the Humble Store.

If anyone has any major issues with their game or donation, please send me a private message instead of posting it in the comments - I get email notification for a PM, but not if people post a comment on an update.!
