The story behind
Improving as a climber requires training and dedication, and it can be really hard to tell how the body actually responds to the training. Climbing grades can be used as an indicator, or you can count how long you can hang on to a grip, or how many pull ups you can do - but are there more specific ways to measure performance?
When professional climber Magnus Midtbø invited us to team up with him to solve this problem, we immediately took the challenge. And a number of prototypes later we are getting there!
The progressor is a wireless load sensor that can be used with any free hanging training grip and a smartphone to get accurate load readings.
The idea behind the progressor is to use a grip that is so tiny that the user is not able to lift the body off the ground with one arm. In this way we can measure the applied load.
It can e.g. be used to measure endurance, peak force or rate of force development. Or if you wonder how far you are from doing that one arm pull up, you can use the Progressor to measure how much help you need from the supporting arm. By testing your strength on a regular basis you can see how you progress.
Proof of concept video
The progressor is based on Nordic nRF52832 chip, a powerful, highly flexible ultra-low power multiprotocol SoC ideally suited for Bluetooth® low energy. The firmware of the microcontroller can easily be upgraded as we add new features to the Progressor.
Before the Progressor can be sold it will be CE and FCC certified. Since the bluetooth module we use is pre-certified, laboratory testing is not required to get the approvals.
Current version of the app for the progressor is written for Android. However if the project is successfully funded we will develop a similar app for iOS. The current version of the app is developed mainly to test the integration between software and hardware. For the final version we will work on the design of the interface and add more features.
Compact and lightweight, yet versatile! The V-Rings™ have a variety of holds, covering most of the grips you need to train your fingers and upper body strength. The rings are perfect to use for warm up on the crag or for sling training. We designed the V-Rings™ to be a supplement to the Progressor, and by using the deepest pocket you can compare your strength against other Progressor users
Mounting hardware is not included in any of the rewards.
Product development is for us an iterative process and covers everything from improving the functionality of the product in itself to the manufacturing process of the product.
From our first kickstarter we have learnt a lot when it comes to manufacturing of plywood products. The electronics and software side, however, adds a new dimension to the product development process. The first prototypes were made using Arduinos, and low end bluetooth modules, while we switches to high end bluetooth chips and micro controller for the latest iterations.
Producing locally allows us to be hands on in the manufacturing process, and in that way we can ensure to deliver the premium quality we want our customers to receive.
At some point we realized that the capacity of our home-built CNC-machine is limited when it comes to making larger volumes. Recently we have ordered two new CNC-machines; one ATC router and one laser cutter.
For assembly of the electronics for the progressor, we hope to be able to manufacture volumes in a range that makes it reasonable to use pick-and-place machines to assemble the electronics.

Manufacturing strategy, production volume, raw material costs and distribution strategy are all variables that decide the final price point for the product. Based on estimates of these variables we have calculated the price we need to be able to manufacture and sell the product. We also think you deserve to get more value back when you are backing us. All the rewards are therefore 15 % lower than the expected retail price after the Kickstarter campaign.
We will start preparing for manufacturing as soon as we reach the funding goal. All deliveries will be shipped before end of April 2018.

Risks and challenges
The process of designing, building and testing has been repeated to a level where the product is ready to be manufactured as soon as this campaign ends. Our new CNC-router is under delivery, and it should be up and running by the end of January so that we are ready to start production of the Progressor and the V-rings as soon as this campaign ends. Even though we have it all sorted out when it comes to manufacturing there is always the risk of delays if a machine fails, or delivery of materials are delayed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
