About

From the time of Morris Brown's walk out of the white Methodist Church in Charleston in the early 1800s, the AME Church has been a force to be reckoned with in South Carolina. Since its inception, it has been an institution deeply concerned about issues of social justice in the world we live in. South Carolina has produced more bishops in the life of the AME Church than any other state, including 2 of the 4 Horsemen.

This documentary will tell in gripping detail the life of African Methodism in South Carolina during the Antebellum, the Reconstruction, resistance to Jim Crow, leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and beyond. It will also tell the proud story of its prized institutions such as Mother Emmanuel and Allen University. Time will also be devoted to the rise of preaching women in the ranks of clergy, the Women's Missionary Society, the Lay Organization, the Sons of Allen, and the Young People's Department.

Your contribution will help tell this story that needs to be more widely known not only in the AME Church, but in all of American history classes!

Risks and challenges

A challenge that we will face upon being funded will be coordinating with the archives in South Carolina for imagery digitization, rights and reproduction. To address this, we plan on working with someone who is specialized and based out of Charleston to be the liaison.
