WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?

We opened our 700 square-foot workshop in City Park West just over a year ago. Our original goal was to create an inviting space where we could work and host the occasional wooden bow workshop and artists'  market. Delanie missed teaching and quickly began offering drop-in workshops and camps for kids based on the idea that children are much more capable than we give them credit for. Each Saturday, kids drop in at the shop to tinker with wood, scraps, and cardboard. It's not uncommon to see a child of five or six using a hammer, saw, or drill. We teach cooperation, thoughtful risk-taking, and problem solving in a safe, caring environment. These same goals hold true for our adult workshops as well.

We believe that the best learning takes place in a beautiful environment with people who have great relationships. The workshop is a physical representation of a teaching and learning cycle that runs on community engagement. Knowing our makers and the children in our community is key to our success. At the shop, we are happy to provide a venue for established and up-and-coming artisans to showcase their talents both as teachers and makers.

We also noticed that children were missing from the maker's movement here in Denver. We know that children have less and less time for creative pursuits but we also know that creative endeavors where one creates something tangible with their hands is good for the brain and the soul. It is our goal to make the programming we are so proud of more accessible to children living near the shop who may not have the financial means to attend.

Our shop is small and we want to do more. We have the opportunity to expand into a storefront two doors down from where our shop is currently located. This space has the same floor plan as our current shop but also has a basement space in which we plan to build our tool and material storage as well as our production faculties. This will free up the top floors of both locations for learning and gallery space. The new location will house our workshop classroom where most of our woodworking, and craft based workshops will be held. In what is our current space, we will be able to showcase the work of our teachers and other artisans in a  co-op retail and gallery concept. We will also be able to use our current space to host our workshops that are not so messy, including, herbal education, community meet ups, writing, Shop Talk, meditation, and more. With this expansion, comes costs.

We have a super amazing network of folks that make up our workshop community and we couldn't be more proud of where we've come in such a short time. We have, so far, been able to start and run the shop without taking on any debt or asking our community for financial help. In order for us to continue to refine our practice & offer better programming, we are asking for that financial help now. Saying thank you cannot express how grateful we are that we are able to do this work. Thank you for helping us to grow.

WHO WE ARE

Delanie Holton-Fessler is a former art teacher and content integration specialist in highly impacted schools throughout the Denver area. During her time as a teacher, Delanie saw that the act of creating has a profound effect on children.  When a child is allowed to try and fail in a supportive environment, they develop lifelong skills of problem solving and self efficacy. She has lectured and published research on the effects of art education on at-risk youth; Delanie has a BFA in Sculpture from Metro State where she helped run the sculpture lab, and she holds a Master's in Education from Regis University. Delanie has shown her artwork regularly for the past 12 years and continues to create work out of the Craftsman and Apprentice shop space. During a sabbatical while her youngest was an infant, she produced 100 paintings in 100 days and wrote an accompanying blog all about living creatively with children.

Jonathan Fessler is a master stone mason, beginning his career as a stonemason in Pennsylvania almost 20 years ago. After moving to Colorado permanently in 2001, Jonathan apprenticed under a master stone mason for five years. Since that time, he's launched and run Fessler Masonry and honed his craft building fireplaces and stone hardscapes throughout the Front Range. While he's not breaking stones, Jonathan is busy teaching his boys the way of the craftsman.

OUR COMMUNITY

Craftsman & Apprentice bridges art and community, encouraging creativity and imagination throughout all ages.

We’ve lived in the neighborhood where the shop is located for close to fifteen years. We’re invested in creating a space where all are welcome, regardless of income. On Saturdays, it’s not uncommon to see kids who live close to the shop drop-in on programs without charge. We also help our community members by repairing furniture and lending tools as often as we can. One of the goals of this campaign is to set aside funds to be able to offer scholarships and free programing for children and adults living near the shop who otherwise would not be able to afford programming fees. City Park West and Whittier is our home, and the workshop represents a community meeting space in which to grow and share ideas.

Risks and challenges

Our risks and challenges include issues with building infrastructure, including outdated electrical systems. Other challenges include building our audience to a sustainable level to support the overhead costs of two shop facilities.
