Replacement screws are in

Posted by Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail (Creator)

Hi everyone,

Replacement screws arrived in Chicago today. Our warehouse will need a few of days to reassemble the Portholes and prepare them for shipment. The final wave of Black Portholes is scheduled to ship on Wednesday, September 18. If you pledged at one of the Black Porthole levels and are still waiting for your rewards, your Porthole(s) will be in this shipment. A tracking notice will be sent by UPS once the shipments have been processed.

If you pledged for White Portholes or added on to your initial pledge after the original Kickstarter campaign ended, your rewards kits will ship at the end of September. We will send an address survey closer to the shipping date.

If you are a backer with a shipping address outside of the continental United States and have not received your Porthole(s), please send an email to

For last minute address changes, please send me a message here on Kickstarter. To check which address you provided, your survey response link is highlighted under your pledge level on the right hand side of the screen.

Thank you,

Martin Kastner and the Crucial Detail team

I finally got my porthole in the mail.
I eventually got around to try it out a few weeks later. It does look good, it would be better if it did not leak indeed. i tried many times to reassemble and do what the instructions and what is written on these comments....but good luck everyone don't think this is a very easy thing to do.
Somehow every time a new area starts to leak when i try to pour liquid.....
Now i wish I never even had seen this kickstarter and I am stuck with five portholes....

@JML You were supposed to receive the complete kits. We'll reach out directly to correct it. I'm sorry about the error.

I received my 5 extra portholes and there weren't glasses or tea samples in them. Is that right?

      Hi Martin,

I backed on august 19 of 2012 but still haven't received my porthole are shipments still going out?

I received my first Porthole order and it is absolutely fantastic. Build quality is through the roof and opening the package was more delightful than opening up a new Apple product. Just received UPS notice that my first add-on order has shipped. Can't wait to use them for my annual Feast of the Seven Fishes meal. Thanks so much Martin!

Dear Martin & Crucial Detail Team...
All I can say is WOW...WOW...WOW! I received my five Portholes last week and immediately had to go out of town, so I haven't been able to play with them yet. The packaging was absolutely stunning and everything was safe and sound. I can't wait to give the ones allocated for gifts to my friends. As soon as I get to play with it, I'll report back. Totally worth the wait...the little tumblers are adorable! Thanks for making sure we only got the very best!

My porthole arrived intact with all parts. Looking forward to experimenting. It's beautiful and seems very well made. Thanks

@Kelly Can you locate a black triangular box inside the box containing the Porthole? That is the accessory box. Please send me a message if it's empty or missing and we'll send out a replacement set.

I received my porthole today in the mail. It had the assembled porthole but did not contain the hex key, screws, or extra screens. Obviously I need the hex key to properly assemble the porthole. Any help with getting these pieces would be appreciated.

Mine arrived tonite! So happy. is kind of damaged..... seems the corners are dented some, plus "seams" and sides were ripped up when openeing and then it was shrink wrapped over it. Not going to have time to check everything out this evening, but is the ripping of the box due to having to reopen and check the boxes one by one? It's a shame, cuz the packaging itself is lovely.... Will advise if there are issues with content. Did others get their box in the same shape?

@Denise I'm sorry about the broken tumblers. Please send an email to for replacements and include images of the broken glasses.

Hooray! I received my two black portholes & tumblers! It was indeed worth the wait! The packaging/styling is beautiful and will make an amazing gift (just not sure who the lucky loved one will be!?!) I of course will be keeping the other and I can't wait to start infusing. I practiced opening and closing the porthole and just adding plain water a few times to get the hang of putting it together without any leaking....Fourth time was the charm and now it works perfectly or should I say, I finally followed the directions word for word :) Patience is a virtue and I wish I had been a little more patient...I am so excited and happy to own this lovely product! Thank you!

Hi, Martin! I was thrilled to unbox my two Portholes I received today from the friendly UPS guy. Everything seems to be in order, except that two of the tumblers arrived broken and in many pieces. Is there any way I can get a replacement set?

Also, I must say that it was worth the wait. CONGRATS on bringing such a great item to market. Can't wait to show it off in whatever hut I manage to scrape together while job hunting. LOL

Yay!!!! n' what not!!! just got my two portholes(Black). They look great. I love it. It came with more than I expected. A bag of tea, 4 recipes and two very sexy looking tumblers. One will be a gift for this Christmas and the other... I'm keeping!!! Hopefully a lot of lessons were learned throughout all of this. Hopefully, this whole thing has not turned you off to the great vehicle Kickstarter is turning out to be. I hope to see more products in the future.

@Fritz This is Aviary's department and we won't be involved in the publishing process. They only allowed us to publish the four that are included. If they do publish more, we'll let backers know.

Martin - thanks for the update! Can't wait to play with it. All the raves have us excited!

@Mani Stock 10-32, 3/8" long countersunk screw would work. Other than the finish, the main difference is a custom thread leader on our screws matching the post's interior chamfer, making it easier to thread in. We will have replacement parts available for purchase shortly after the next shipment.

I backed on 9/1 as a 2012 Christmas present for my wife... I really really hope you're finally going to make good on that... Given the updates over the last year or so, I was really beginning to wonder...

All the quality and production problems could have been prevented and addressed quicker if you would have sourced production in the U.S. Cheap production in China holds too many hidden costs. Not worth it. You raised enough money to have it made in the USA. Better to have your supplier in the same city where you can work closely with them and audit their processes.
