Production ramping up

Hi everyone,

Production update: The glass process changes were successful, yield has improved, and the factory ramped up production. The assembly line is completing 2000 Portholes this week and plans to continue at roughly that rate until the Kickstarter edition is complete. We expect to receive the 2000 in five weeks and in about another week, they should be in backers' hands. The rest should follow in two more bi-weekly waves.

In terms of the 160 that were supposed to ship last week, our printer producing the kit box, recipe cards, and shipping boxes had to postpone due to an equipment failure. I was at the printer yesterday for a press check of the recipe cards and the kit box that holds the Porthole, tea, and glasses along with the recipe cards, few images are below. All packaging components should be finished this week and the Porthole kits will ship after the weekend.

Thanks again for your patience. Have a great week!

Martin and the Crucial Detail team

With as many comments below requesting more communication, and a couple of weeks since the last one, it begins to appear that the company is either arrogant or embarrassed. I suspect the former. As a person who has gone through the process, wasting the potential goodwill of your initial supporters is a crime.

    2. Keith Rome on April 4, 2013

There might not be much that could have been done to speed things up, but the lack of communication has really hurt things. For a project so badly behind schedule, you need to at the very least be showing your face every few days to let customers know that you haven't moved on. Even if it's just to say "sorry, still waiting on the next batch". It only takes a minute of time to do that.

As it stands I feel rather embarrassed that I gave my wife that "coming soon" card for the portholes... because there is nothing "soon" about 6 more months delay BEYOND the original 3-month delay. In retrospect, I shouldn't have even told her about it.

That said, this is pretty much standard operating procedure for Kickstarter projects. In all of the projects I have backed, not one has delivered on time yet. Most end up EXTREMELY late. Often, it seems that the project owners can't seem to admit to themselves that they are really behind until the date comes and goes.

I hope we get these by Christmas!

This process has totally soured my interest in this product.

I agree with Chuck. We simply HAVE to be patient. A funding of 2600% of the original goal brings about unforeseen logistical problems. There's not much Martin can/could have done to speed it up. We have all been waiting for 6 months now, those extra few weeks won't make the difference.
And I rather have a quality product than something that has been quickly put together to satisfy shipping dates. After all, when you back a project, you know these things can happen.
BTW: when is mine coming? ;-)

Not to speak for Martin, but in the update above her said:

We are still within that 5 week timeline before the 2000 porthole batch comes in. I think he already shipped the origian 160 that arrived. if you were not in that original 160, then you will either be in the 2000 that are supopsed to come next week, or in the bi-weekly waves that follow.

Assuming his timeline is still accurate, most units will have shipped by mid-May.

One of the biggest problems here is lack of communication. the last response to someone below was on March 12, almost 4 weeks ago. Is it so hard to give your customers (yes, the backers here are not only your customers -- they're your best/first customers who trusted you with their money to enable you to build your business) just a little bit of information? A simple post every couple of days updating the status, even if it is bad news, would do wonders for your customer relations.

    7. Bryan Kersten on April 2, 2013

It's now been a month since the last update and it seems a lot of people are getting rightfully anxious. I think we are owed at this point another update and ideally some sort of timeline so we can have an estimated arrival. This silence really isn't cool at this point.

Hi - just wondering when i can expect to receive the 2 portholes i ordered?

      thanks.

    9. Stephanie Yau Barker on April 1, 2013

Just wondering what the ETA was for delivery. I'm moving in a couple months and don't want it getting lost in the shuffle.

    10. Charles Tremewen on March 31, 2013

Regrettably, and as a product manager, this is the poorest managed product development I think I have ever seen considering you have so much in the way of funding and support to drive this project forward. If you worked for me Martin you would have been sacked. To hold customers ransom for this long requires customers to remarkable patience. How many have you lost along this development path? I know we almost withdrew from our support but to your credit your product is very cool. Stick to design and leave the product development to those who can get the job done. I know the comment section says be "respectful and considerate" but to fair you really should be giving your first adopter of your product something special to say thanks for their extraordinary holding power on a leap of faith. With this said - when WILL we get our PORTHOLE?

    11. Christina Chew on March 29, 2013

      Hello,
Are the Portholes being shipped out from earliest backer to later backers or are the smaller orders being shipped first, saving the larger ones for when production is running faster/smoother? I was an early backer (first day) and pledged enough for 5 Portholes. I've looked at the backing charts/graphs and approximate that between 750-800 Portholes were backed that day (my math may be off, if so I apologize). Assuming production is going as planned and that orders are shipped in order of backing, I should receive mine mid-late April, correct? I know you guys have put alot of work into getting this right, and I'm thrilled it's finally come to fruition, but I'm going to be out of the country sporadically over the next 4 months for up 2-3 weeks at a time and am trying to get an idea of when these may arrive so I can make plans for someone to collect them in case I'm out of town.
      Thanks,
      Christina

My patience is wearing thin. Seems like with around 3/4 million dollars you could deliver some product. The crucial detail that is missing is delivering what you promised. I held up my end, what about yours? Six months and waiting.......

When I look at this page, on the right-hand side, my level of support is highlighted, at the bottom of that box, there's a note that says survey sent, with a link that says your response. Which is where I can see the address that I have given them. I'm thinking that's a good way to see if they have your correct address.

    17. Matt Moy on March 24, 2013

Is there a way to get shipping numbers to track? Or to confirm that you have our correct addresses? Thanks so much in advance! Keep up the great work guys.

Ok, I'm growing weary of waiting! :) Just in the best way, because I'm just so looking forward to natural lemon infused chilled beverages on the patio this spring. To keep my enthusiasm going I even went to the restaurant in Chicago but that was already months ago. Looking forward to the day when I get that box on my front steps!

How do we submit shipping addresses for backers

    32. Keith Rome on March 8, 2013

@Sheila: $99 for one, $190 for two, $450 for five, or $800 for 10. They can already be pre-ordered from the Crucial Detail online store at http://www.crucialdetail.com/work/porthole.html

They do not come with the glasses or other Kickstarter extras. Only the black ones are available for pre-order (the white ones were limited editions).

    33. SHEILA SACCOMANNO on March 8, 2013

Thanks for getting back to me. What will be the price point for those post-Kickstarter Porthole?

    34. Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail Creator on March 6, 2013

@Christie: Please send me a message here on Kickstarter with your new address and we'll update the file.

@Sheila: Yes, the Porthole has been available for pre-order and will be available for purchase once all rewards and pre-orders have shipped. Post-Kickstarter orders don't include the Kickstarter stretch goals.

    35. Christie Vasquez on March 6, 2013

Thanks for the update. Love the packaging. Will there be an opportunity to update the shipping address? I have since moved. Thanks

    36. SHEILA SACCOMANNO on March 6, 2013

Just asking again...are you going to make this product available to the consumer? Everyone that I have shown this to..want at least two. So looking forward to getting mine. Love the packaging.
