Happy Holidays!

Hi everyone.

I hope you’re enjoying your Portholes. For the holiday season, we’ve created a new recipe to share with you:

Thank you all for helping us make the Porthole a reality. We concluded shipping the Kickstarter edition some time ago, followed by add-ons and pre-orders. A small inventory is now available at our Chicago location as well as at our facility in Spain. Our Porthole minisite has just gone live at www.theportholeinfuser.com. There, we will continue to feature monthly recipes along with news, use tips, and a replacement parts shop.

Large tumblers

One very exciting development is that, thanks to suggestions from many of you, two larger versions of the tasting tumblers are now in production. We’ve gone through the development process with the manufacturer and anticipate a small batch arriving January in the EU and February in the US. If you’re interested in the larger tumblers, please fill this form out. This will help us gauge interest and adjust production volume, if necessary. We’ll notify you once production is complete. Let me just say that they feel fantastic in the hand and one of the two samples we received is now my absolute favorite nightcap snifter. The volumes are 4 fl oz and 7 fl oz (120 and 200ml). The one on the far right is the original for your reference.

In my last update, I mentioned a Porthole Use and Tips Facebook group. The group has been going strong with users frequently sharing recipe ideas and images. If you’re not a Facebook person, we’d still love to see your creations! Please tweet us your recipes and photos @CrucialDetail and use the #Porthole hashtag, or share with us via email, tumblr or Pinterest. There is always the possibility that your creation could become the recipe of the month on theportholeinfuser.com!

Crucial Detail web shop for the EU launched

Now, for the first time, a variety of Crucial Detail designs along with the Porthole, are available for purchase to our European customers. Our EU and US web shops can both be found at: http://www.crucialdetail.com/.

On behalf of myself and the entire team at Crucial Detail we hope you have a great holiday!

Thank you again.

Replacement screws are in

Posted by Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail (Creator)

Hi everyone,

Replacement screws arrived in Chicago today. Our warehouse will need a few of days to reassemble the Portholes and prepare them for shipment. The final wave of Black Portholes is scheduled to ship on Wednesday, September 18. If you pledged at one of the Black Porthole levels and are still waiting for your rewards, your Porthole(s) will be in this shipment. A tracking notice will be sent by UPS once the shipments have been processed.

If you pledged for White Portholes or added on to your initial pledge after the original Kickstarter campaign ended, your rewards kits will ship at the end of September. We will send an address survey closer to the shipping date.

If you are a backer with a shipping address outside of the continental United States and have not received your Porthole(s), please send an email to info@crucialdetail.com

For last minute address changes, please send me a message here on Kickstarter. To check which address you provided, your survey response link is highlighted under your pledge level on the right hand side of the screen.

Thank you,

Martin Kastner and the Crucial Detail team

Almost there

Posted by Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail (Creator)

Hi everyone,

The vast majority of Kickstarter rewards have been shipped. If you backed by August 28, your Portholes should be in your possession or en route to you. If you backed prior to that date and have not received a tracking notice from UPS, please check your spam folder. A small number of backers have not given us their shipping address. We've sent multiple messages requesting it. If you're an early backer without a Porthole or tracking notice, please check that you've filled out the Kickstarter address survey.

There are several hundred backers who pledged in the final days of the campaign whose rewards have not yet shipped. The final batch of black Portholes for Kickstarter backers arrived at our warehouse in Chicago last week but we discovered an issue with screws in part of the shipment. We're awaiting replacement parts and expect to ship these Portholes within the next two weeks. I apologize for the additional delay. Add-on kits will ship once all initial Kickstarter rewards have been fulfilled. White Portholes will ship later in the month as these require additional processing.

We have several backers who indicated an APO/FPO address. We're reaching out to all of them individually to confirm address before shipping. Those with APO/FPO addresses who have not received our message or haven't confirmed the address should send me a message here on Kickstarter.

Use tips:
- It's a good idea to first test the Porthole with plain water to familiarize yourself with its components and the assembly process.
- We can't emphasize enough the need to squeeze the Porthole during tightening. Press down on the top glass pane during the initial tighten, once you pick it up squeeze it around the perimeter (as if holding a steering wheel) to make sure the gasket is properly seated, and then hold tightly with one hand as you snug the screw. The gasket compression comes from the squeeze, not from torquing the screw. The screw is only intended to hold the glass in place.
- Check the gasket after tightening before filling with liquid. You should see a flat spot around the entire perimeter that's uniform in width.
- Increase in pressure inside the Porthole may cause leaks. If you're infusing components that expand or release gasses during the course of an infusion, don't insert the stopper during infusion..
- It's normal for the gasket to come out. When reinserting, make sure the square face goes in the groove and the rounded one protrudes.

Our backers created a Facebook group for sharing images, recipes, ideas, etc. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/169257609887026/

manufacturing is done

Posted by Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail (Creator)

Hi everyone.

Third wave of Porthole reward kits is now being assembled and those slated to receive them have been sent an email survey. This includes our Canadian and European backers. If you haven't received our survey yet, your rewards will be shipping in one of the subsequent waves and you will be hearing from us several days prior to shipping.

The Kickstarter edition Porthole manufacturing is done and the last ones are en route to Chicago. We will be shipping the remaining rewards in three additional waves roughly two weeks apart.

Rest of the World backers: Your rewards will be shipping in the next wave, currently scheduled to land July 6 and ship the following week.

White Porthole backers: Your rewards will be shipping in the final wave, currently scheduled for first week in August.

Poster level backers: Please respond to the message sent to you here on Kickstarter with the size of your choice. Be sure to check and fill out the Kickstarter survey if you haven't already done so.

Address changes: The best way to update your shipping address is to fill out our email survey sent via Survey Monkey several days before shipping.

Tracking: Everyone receives a notice with a tracking number once their shipment is processed and ready for pickup.

Thank you,

Martin and the Crucial Detail team

Production and fulfillment schedule update.

Posted by Martin Kastner / Crucial Detail (Creator)

Hi everyone.

I really appreciate the patience of those of you who are still waiting for your Portholes, allowing us to work out the supply chain issues. Thank you!

We finally have a firm production schedule that the suppliers not only promised but also have been able to stick to over the past month. At the end of this week, the assembly line will hit a 5000 porthole mark and the entire Kickstarter edition production of well over 8000 will be complete at the end of June. The last Kickstarter rewards should be en route to backers at the end of July.

Our next wave of shipments won't take place until the end of June due to a 3 week delay in port on the way out of China. Our shipment has been rescheduled to arrive in Chicago 6/22. It should be quickly followed up by one on 6/29 and two more shipments in July. There still are variables in play that we don't control. On the Chinese side, we haven't been able to get export clearance prior to physically delivering our shipments to port and the freight forwarder doesn't book our container space until it has cleared, making it somewhat unpredictable since there isn't always space available on a short notice. While we are able to pre-clear our shipments with US customs, there still is a possibility of being selected for inspection, potentially adding more time to the process.

If you're wondering where you stand in terms of the shipping waves, most US backers who backed by 8/11 have received their Portholes. The next two late June shipments will get us to the backing date of 8/20. Those who backed after 8/20 should receive theirs at the end of July.

Canadian backers: Your Portholes are a part of the next wave shipping at the end of June.

European backers: The EU shipment experienced a similar outbound delay. It is scheduled to arrive at our warehouse in Spain 6/25. We expect to have all of those en route to you first week in July.

Rest of the World backers: Your Portholes are a part of the shipment currently scheduled to arrive 6/29. Depending on your location, they should be en route to you first or second week in July.

Thank you for your patience!
