WE DECLARE 2016 THE YEAR OF THE MOTHER
Our mission for 2016 is to expand The Pump and Dump brand, have the resources to create the projects we’ve been dying to work on, and spread the Year of the Mother message to moms everywhere. This is how we want to do it:
1. MORE LIVE SHOWS
2. MORE DIGITAL CONTENT
3. MORE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
4. YEAR OF THE MOTHER 2016 CAMPAIGN
Three years ago, in the trenches of new parenthood, we started The Pump and Dump: A Parentally Incorrect Comedy Show and Night Out, For Once – a night for every kind of mom to be in the same room and laugh about the things we all have in common as parents. We never thought this show would grow like it has, but we now tour the country, create videos, write for blogs, wipe butts, make lunches, take conference calls, share beds in airport hotels, drive rentals and tell moms they are awesome every day.
We never expected to grow as we have and feel such camaraderie with the thousands of remarkable moms we have met. What we’ve learned is that telling moms they are awesome, giving them prizes for just making it out of the house, and laughing about the complicated life of a mother is really really important. What powers The Pump and Dump is moms, but moms don’t always empower themselves. We want to change that.
This is the year to be kinder to ourselves. This is the year where moms tell each other that they are awesome. This is the year we join together and declare as a group that raising humans is hard, but it's easier when we support each other. Let's change the way we treat ourselves and our friends - let's create a band of mothers.
WHY DO WE NEED YOU?
We love you. The Pump and Dump is for moms, and we literally want it to be powered by moms and the brands who love them. We realize that this show is bigger than us and we want to gather the BREEDER troops to set this thing on fire. (BREEDER is our affectionate term for any woman raising a human, no matter how she got there.)
This takes resources. The Pump and Dump has turned into a full time job for both of us...and for three years we have been doing everything ourselves, with help from only one other amazing mom, Kate. From managing a business to hauling music equipment through the airport to stuffing goody bags late into the night, we've done it all as a very, very small team and we've built this thing with a lot of blood, sweat and tears.
We suspect that many people think that we are flown venue to venue and wined and dined as the “talent.” Maybe you saw an Instagram photo with a champagne glass in our hands or caught a pic from the one hotel out of 20 that had a pool. That’s exactly why we posted those pics on Instagram...because we were so happy that it was happening! The truth is that traveling with the show, making videos, developing products, spreading the mom love and launching a Kickstarter campaign costs a lot of money and takes a LOT of time. We love our jobs, but if we want to grow, our manpower (or MOMpower) and resources need to grow with us. Below are details about the ways we plan to grow the brand to its full potential and why we need your help.
We want to tour to more moms. We have 19 shows currently booked from January through June, and that’s only half of the year. Touring is expensive, and we wish we could say it was glamorous. Also, we don’t stay on the road when we tour. We strategically plan our dates around our families and travel home as soon as we can after every city. That’s a lot of 6am flights - see our Instagram for proof.
Below you’ll see where we’ve been and where we’re booked for the first half of 2016. We are off in summer (hint: kids) and then we’ll start back up in the fall with a goal of another 10-15 shows August-November.
There are a lot of expenses involved in producing the show on the road and, even with a bootstrap budget, there are costs that cannot be avoided. With complete transparency, here’s how it all breaks down:
The Pump and Dump live show is a lo-fi (live) experience in a hi-fi (digital) world and something you could never fully grasp from behind your computer. There is nothing like finally leaving your house, being surrounded by awesome moms, and laughing so hard you leave feeling validated and ready to deal. With your help, we can continue to bring our show to more moms all over the country. Here's a sneak peek into The Pump and Dump experience:

We know you want more videos, and we want to give them to you. While the live show is what we have built our brand on, there are only a number of cities we can travel to per year. We are constantly asked for more online content that moms can share with friends and follow until we return to their towns or make it to new ones. We have BIG ideas we can't wait to share, and we need your help to make them happen.
Our web series is ready for production and although we cannot divulge all the juicy details, we can tell you that it's about real moms answering real questions, Pump and Dump style. Our goal is to make 20 episodes of the series in 2016.
We also have crazy great ideas for some of our music from the show. If you haven't seen Mama's Boy or Hotel Room, our previous music videos, check them out on our You Tube channel.
In case you don't know this about us, we are "slightly" Type A and we have high expectations for the quality of our work. We're also thrifty (because we're also moms - ha) and while we're able to work within lean and mean budgets, producing digital content is no cheap joke. Unfortunately, you just can't shoot everything on your iPhone.
We've always had a vision of creating an online shop filled with gifts for moms to give other moms. Last year we rolled out tee shirts and koozies we couldn't keep on the shelf. The success of our merchandise to date has inspired us to go bigger.
Not only do we want to have more of a selection to sell online and at shows, we really REALLY want to be able to give away a boatload of awesome products to deserving moms. And during the Year of the Mother, that's exactly what we plan to do. Here's a list of some of the products in the works:
- Tee Shirts
- Wine Labels
- Gift Packages
Products help us continue our mission of spreading humor and generosity, mom to mom. We believe expanding our product line is a key component to the Year of the Mother campaign.
Spreading the message that 2016 is the Year of the Mother takes strategy and manpower. We have a marketing plan and a vision, but it takes dollars to get our message heard...and you all can be a part of it.
We are launching an interactive social media campaign featuring monthly themes and giveaways. We are calling for random acts of kindness - mom to mom. We have a small but mighty marketing team to help tell the story and to arm our band of mothers with ways to participate.
Our hope is that the Year of the Mother creates a global conversation encouraging moms to actually believe they are awesome and that they are not alone. By declaring this call to action and asking you all to commit to the mission from day one, and by thoughtfully distributing the message through every modern channel available as well as through all the categories above, we know we'll reach a helluva lot of moms and make them smile.
In addition to all the cool pledge prizes you see below, we are unlocking awesome add-ons for the last two weeks of this campaign. Add-ons will be retroactive to anyone awesome enough to have already pledged prior to the add-on date, and of course, added to the existing pledge prizes we have >> over there >>

WHY WE NEED TO EXCEED OUR GOAL
If you are a math genius, you may notice that we are not matching our Kickstarter goal amount with the actual costs of our 2016 plans. We are hoping to exceed our goal and get to do everything we’ve laid out for you, but realize that’s a lot to ask...even as we continue to operate on a shoestring budget. The simple truth is that even one music video is a big chunk of change, so the more we raise, the more videos we’re able to make…you get it. And if you are dying to read through just one more list of goals, here’s more of what we are hoping to accomplish:
- Ensure that our Fall tour is fully funded
- Continue creating awesome digital content
- Roll out additional products
- Staff support for larger projects
- Legal support for brand protection
- Continue to enhance the live show experience with perks for moms, before and after events and even more content
Risks and challenges
Any project or business endeavor could potentially encounter unexpected obstacles, and ours is no different. The good news is we've already been performing and touring for three years, we've already produced videos and we've already created a bunch of merchandise, so we know what it takes to get this show on the road. Literally.
As with every other mom in the history of the universe, our biggest enemy is time. Time to spend two 20 hour days filming a music video. Time to fly to new cities. Time to film our web series. Time to pack and ship orders from our ecommerce shop. Time to be sick. Time to go on field trips. But, also like every other mom in the history of the universe, our resolve and power to multi-task is strong, and we do believe we've set reasonable expectations for ourselves.
So, in conclusion - barring any unforeseen circumstances - we are confident about our 2016 goals and beyond. We have incredibly supportive husbands, extended families, and friends who enable us to do this awesome job we love. We work fabulously together and each of us has her own unique skill set essential to the company. Plus, our kids play together swimmingly, which means there are plenty of play/work dates in our future.
