We are the Little Things, and we have a play,
It’s called A Dog’s Brexit and we just want to say…
We really need your help to make this play go ahead,
So we can share it with families and let conversation spread.

The play is about Brexit (which you’ve probably guessed by now),
And it’s about the British Bulldogs who live in Bowwow Town.
There’s jokes and puns a plenty, our aim’s to entertain,
As well as offer knowledge that will excite the brain.

Now before you get worried, we’re not taking sides,
We show Leave and Remain and address the divide.
But so this can happen, we’re asking everyone we know,
For a small (or large) donation, to help us make this show!

WHO WE ARE

The Little Things is an emerging children’s theatre company based in Bristol. We are a group of enthusiastic young theatre makers, predominantly made up of theatre & film graduates from the University of Bristol and people currently working at Bristol Old Vic. We are passionate about creating engaging and educational theatre for children and their families. We aim to create performances that feed the imagination, nourish the soul and inspire the mind, presenting current topics to young audiences in a clear and exciting way. We want to make plays about Big Topics for Little Ones.

WHAT WE’RE DOING

Our first show is A Dog’s Brexit, a new play written by Josie Hunt. ‘What is A Dog’s Brexit about?’ we hear you ask! Well. Let us tell you…

It is a play about Brexit, set in a town of dogs: Bowwow Town. The dogs are part of the BU, aka the Bowwow Union. The kennels trade with each other and dogs move from kennel to kennel, but this luxury comes at a price - a lot of doggie-dollar and BU rules to deal with. Some of the British Bulldogs decide they want to leave the BU. In an attempt to be re-elected, the Top Dog announces a BU ruf-erendum, where the British Bulldogs must vote in or out. And so the campaigns begin. We join Barney Bulldog and his family, as they squabble and disagree about which way to vote, in a Dog-Eat-Dog world where the news and media is an unavoidable influence.

Oh - and the whole thing is written in rhyme.

The production will be fast paced, lively and vibrant with plenty of multi-roling (7 actors play a total of 34 characters). We have some very exciting plans for the set, involving lots of newspaper and a cartoon aesthetic. We’ve already started some prototypes for some miniature kennels and cloud puppets...

The play itself will last about 45 minutes. We will be touring it in Spring/Summer 2018 around Bristol and the South West. We have confirmed three show dates for the Bath Fringe Festival in May and are in the process of confirming more. With the necessary funds, we will also be creating some workshops to go alongside the play that we can carry out in schools in Autumn 2018.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Sept 2016 Josie adapted a political cartoon for a University assignment on ‘Translation & Adaptation’. The original script was 10-15 mins long, and was entitled ‘One Less Bowl to Lick’.

Oct 2017 In an impromptu flurry, Josie ended up performing the poem at a scratch night at The Room Above Theatre. She recited the play as a one woman monologue and received such positive feedback, that she thought it was perhaps worth revisiting…

Nov 2017 Imogen and Josie started pooling people together to form The Little Things Theatre company, and began conversations about what their first project could be. In late November, a group got together to R&D (Research & Develop) A Dog’s Brexit.

Dec 2017 Brimming with ideas from the R&D, Josie extended and edited the script. She added in more characters and scenes, creating the focus of the Bulldog family.

Jan 2018 The company re-grouped to have their first rehearsal with the new script, and to prepare for another scratch night to showcase a 15 minute work-in-progress. Meanwhile, developments with the company were well under way - the website and social media sites were launched!

Feb 2018 Meetings, ideas, discussions, rehearsals, filming, bookings and many other Little Things things have continued! We had a great rehearsal at Bristol Old Vic and a workshop with James Peries, BOV's Literary Manager at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. It was a great day brainstorming staging ideas and getting feedback on the script, many thanks to James for his support!

Now Imogen and Josie have both invested money into the company in order to start things off, however we have reached a stage where we need financial help in order to continue. We want to be able to put this show on in theatres and share it with children and families.

OUR PLAN

March - May Plenty of rehearsals, including a work-in-progress showing to children to get feedback. Production preparation - set making, prop sourcing, show marketing, costume designing, poster designing, etc

26/27 May Bath Fringe Festival - three performances at The Mission Theatre:

Saturday 26 May 2pm
Sunday 27 May 1pm
Sunday 27 May 2.30pm

June/July Further performance dates in Bristol and Cardiff, venues tbc

Autumn 2018 Further runs in the South West and beyond, touring to schools and theatre spaces and developing workshops for KS2 & KS3 about Brexit.

OUR BUDGET

Josie and Imogen have invested £500 into the company to start things off. We need a further £2,000 to cover the costs of making and touring this show. Our pie chart shows where your money will be going - production costs, marketing, venue hire etc.

WHY HELP US

Of course you’ll be asking yourself, why should we help? What’s in it for me? Here are some reasons that will hopefully persuade you…

  • You will get a reward! Pick your Dog’s Meal at the side of the page and see what goodies we will send you.
  • You will be supporting an educational project that will be engaging children in a much-needed political conversation.
  • You will be helping to make our show reach people by supporting our marketing! Flyers, posters and printing are pricey, but will mean we can get bums on seats and share this play with as many people as possible.
  • You will be starting The Little Things Theatre ball rolling. Once we’re able to put on this first project, we’ll use the money from ticket sales to fund more projects. There are already some ideas in the pipeline about a hot air balloon play for Early Years! Watch this space…
  • You will get to see the play, inevitably the biggest pull for anyone! And this play does not only appeal to children, but has something to entertain all!

Thank you for reading, for watching, for waiting,
We hope you like the looks of what we’re creating.
It’s a tough business this theatre-making lark,
But we love it, we do, and we have a spark -
Of a story that’s fun, silly and educational,
We think kids will find it really sensational.
And as Phillip Pullman says: ‘children need theatre as much as they need air’
We’ve got theatre a-plenty, we have some spare!

Please help us to make this project a reality,
Money’s an issue (we know you know the gravity)
Just a click on the right and you’re away!
You’ll get some tasty rewards every time you pay.
We know it’s not nice to part with your pounds,
But every little will help, as cheesy as it sounds!

Thank you! Imogen and Josie ☁️

Risks and challenges

What if venues don’t want to book you?

We haven’t secured all of our tour dates yet, so there’s a risk that we are declined from the theatres we’ve contacted and therefore unable to put the show on in locations other than Bath. However, we have plenty of back-up venues and are very confident that we’ll be able to put the show on somewhere! Our set and tech is very flexible to allow the opportunity to tour schools and community halls, which gives us a huge amount of scope for venue flexibility.

What if people don’t buy tickets for your show?

We are hoping that with a good marketing strategy and enough money from the Kickstarter to pay for flyers, posters and online promoting, we’ll be able to sell plenty of tickets. We’re hoping that the title and unique concept will entice audiences in!

What if the show isn’t good?

Obviously that would be a disaster. All of this work and money and then the product isn’t any good! There are a few things on our side that will prevent this from happening:

1. The script is good. Feedback from scratch nights, friends, family, writers, theatre makers and anyone that has read some or all of the script, has confirmed this - and Josie has also been constantly updating the script based on this feedback.

2. All of our company have theatrical backgrounds and are used to making theatre of a high standard. Our ensemble includes members of Kite Theatre, INKBLOC ensemble, Muddlebox Arts and The Gloucester Theatre Company, and we have team members working for Bristol Old Vic, the BBC, Travelling Light, The Room Above and SoFar Sounds.

3. We are constantly seeking professional feedback and advice. We have the support of Joana Mendes, who we met through Theatre Bristol, and have had script suggestions from James Peries, Literary Associate at Bristol Old Vic.

4. Our links within Bristol mean that we will be able to test out material and get feedback from child audiences before the first shows.

5. We have plenty of time! We’ve got a three whole months (as we launch this Kickstarter) before previews, so we can really make this production the best it can be.
