Jen - the Green Thumb of Green Thumb Technology!
Jen has always wanted to create a business that is good for the planet and people. Three years ago, while researching how to make her balcony garden more vertical the idea of the VeggieWall came to her!
Jen's passion for eating healthy food and her desire to share a healthy food solution is inspired by growing up in a single-parent household where sometimes the cupboards were bare. Another inspiration comes from having family members pass away from cancer. Growing your own food is beneficial for our health because plants start to lose their nutrients once picked. Jen has a VeggieWall in her kitchen, a 500 sq foot apartment. It makes it easy to cook with fresh ingredients.
Growing our own food helps reduce our impact on the planet. Growing with the VeggieWall decreases the need to ship food, and therefore can decrease greenhouse gases associated with shipping. The VeggieWall uses 2/3rd less water over conventional agriculture. The drought in California is a great example that we cannot sustain to feeding the world population with current farming practices. It is time for change! Jen hopes Green Thumb Technology will inspire more people to grow their own food, so we can also reduce the use of pesticides. The more we grow, the greater our impact!
Matthew Mei - CoFounder & Lifelong Inventor
Matt has always been creative. He has produced 4 music albums, had his own recording studio, and has been involved in photography and film for many years. Matt has also applied his creative talents to renovating homes in Vancouver for the past 12 years.
Matt's can-do problem solving attitude, his entrepreneur experience in music and construction, and his desire since he was young to invent makes his talents the perfect compliment to Jen's business skills and drive to create a great product that people need.
Matt is also a foodie and loves to cook with fresh herbs. Prior to getting involved with inventing the VeggieWall he had never grown food before. The VeggieWall was so easy for him to use, he was growing fresh herbs in his basement with many of our early prototypes.
Gary Brownstone - Business Adviser
Jen and Matt met Gary through an Istuary Pitch Competition (think Dragons Den or Shark Tank). Gary was one of the judges and mentors. We took second place in the pitch competition, and better yet, connected with Gary! He has been helping us with many elements of our business, from our business plan, to setting up manufacturing, to budgets and financing.
Gary Brownstone is a C-level executive with over twenty years of direct experience in launching, growing, financing and exiting tech companies. He has a BA & MBA from the University of Western Ontario - Richard Ivey School of Business.
Gary has owned, operated, managed, mentored, financed and exited both private and public companies in IT, Ag-Tech, Clean Tech, Life Sciences, Health Tech, and more. As President of a tech incubator from 2007 to 2015 Gary supported the launch, financing and growth of over 45 companies. He has conducted business throughout Canada, the United States, Israel and China.

We have overcome many hurdles and challenges to develop the VeggieWall. From design, to sourcing parts and manufacturers, here and abroad, as well as financing.
We have spent over three years developing, testing, and getting others to test the VeggieWall. We wanted to ensure we could fulfill our campaign so we waited a full year to launch, rather than launch when we had our early prototypes built.
There will continue to be challenges in developing and delivering a product. The demand for the VeggieWall will influence the following steps:
-Mid to high level orders will involve creating a new mould and faster manufacturing and assembly processes. The product will be the same. We have discussed this process with our manufacturers and anticipate if it doesn't happen on Kickstarter, it will happen in the future regardless.
-Hiring and training staff to spread the workload
Possible Delays:
-Suppliers not fulfilling our orders. We have experience finding suppliers and our general practice for each part has been to gain quotes from three companies for the same part. If company 1 does not come through we have contacts and have developed relations with companies 2 and 3 for every part of the VeggieWall.
-Delay in shipping of parts from suppliers
-Delay in our manufacturing of parts, which will reslult in:
-Delay in assembly
We will do our best to start orders as soon as we can and give our manufacturers and suppliers notice, and hold them to the timelines they have provided to us.
