Thank you for visiting and exploring the most important artistic project I have ever undertaken. With a successful funding endeavor, I will be able to share with the world the funny, sometimes dangerous career, of being a left of center clown in the right wing circus of modern politics. Did I ever tell you about being put in a mental hospital by the secret service while dressed as Uncle Sam? That story is here!. Did I ever tell you about the 8.0 second Oscar I received for being a stunt driver in "THE MATRIX" It's here! And the day I interviewed Ollie North, Neil Bush, and Pat Robertson, but PBS refused to air the segment? These are just a few of the true stories that will either have you laughing, crying or both. Included in the rewards incentives is the 1.5 hr DVD that chronicles and validates almost 40 years of shoot from the lip satire.
Here's how it all got started:
37 years ago I hitchhiked into Berkeley, CA as a white face mime from the fair state of Oregon. I lived, worked, and went to school in Eugene. i worked as a firefighter for the US Forest Service. I went to school at the University of Oregon The call of the mime brought me south to the Leonard Pitt School of Mime. I was intent on conquering the world with my silence.
Within one year of my arrival in the Free Speech capital of the USA, In Berkeley, CA I found my ideal spot to disseminate my message and a stronger voice than I knew I had. There, with newspaper in hand, I railed against the powers that be.
How did I come up with a title for this book? Some 30 years ago at Cal Berkeley and as the story goes.... I was fully engaged in a First Amendment rant, newspaper in hand, etc. Something I said must have struck a law enforcement nerve. I was arrested by the campus police on a charge of disturbing the peace. .
On the arresting officers docket was listed; WEAPON:MOUTH.
Hence the subtitle: MY ADVENTURES IN THE FREE SPEECH ZONE as well as the title was inspired by this incident. Almost 40 years ago, when I embarked on this journey, into the heart of the First Amendment, there, were no computers nor cell phones. Now, The struggle to attract and hold the attention of people with shorter and shorter attention spans leaves one gasping for the good old days of time, not defined by robots. In the words of Arnie Passman "to survive history, one must enter the Mythfire. This is my contribution to the burn.
I need 160 people who believe in me, my work, and ultimately in a book that will not only inform, but entertain people of all ages around issues of the first amendment for generations to come.
Here is a breakdown of the cost to publish and finish this project
$2600.00: Regent Press of Berkeley,ca, 100 copies. Typesetting , design, editing, proof reading, marketing, all the things necessary to publish.
$200.00: For the paper, metal backing, color brushing, and assembly of 200 custom designed buttons which read WEAPON:MOUTH.
$300.00: For the duplication and cover sleeve for 200 1.5 hr DVD's titled "Stoney Burkes Greatest Hits"
$250.00: USPS postage fees to mail the book, dvd, or buttons
$395.00 100 more books from Regent Press
$100.00: USPS book rate fee to ship all books to my address
$150.00: to design, print and mail 200 postcards with the pic of the cover shot of the book.
$5.00: One large jar of instant coffee to facilitate consciousness after all this work.
Risks and challenges
The challenge I see once funding is secured, is to finish the book, put it on disk, and getting it to the publisher in time to bring the book to print in February of 2014.
Obviously if the funding phase of this project is unsuccessful, then another less costly alternative would be my best option.
As it is i need 160 people to invest $25.00 or more to bring 200 books to market.
All those years of playing for dollars in the hat on the street will hopefully be rewarded here on this site to bring the stories and adventures of free speeching to a wider audience.
