Help us help the community by producing more granulated maple sugar from pure maple syrup!
Balsam Woods Farm wants to GROW! With your help, we can!
Our project is about helping our community and other maple syrup producers. We can help our community by providing access to natural and healthy granulated maple sugar. We help other producers by giving them access to a means to convert their maple syrup to sugar. As many farmers use maple sugaring as a means of supplementing their income in an otherwise off season, this can help them keep their farms profitable.
On this page we describe who we are and what we would like to do. If you have any questions or comments, please add them on these pages and please, help us spread the word!
Who we are: Balsam Woods Farm is a multigenerational farm located in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut. We produce high quality real maple syrup that has won awards in fairs and accolades from our customers around the world. Now we want to expand and be able to produce granulated real maple sugar.
How it’s made: Granulated maple sugar is made by raising the temperature of maple syrup to 250° and stirring it until it crystallizes. We currently produce small batches of maple sugar by hand which is time consuming and expensive.
What we’d like to do: We would like to expand by acquiring a maple sugar mixer that will allow us to produce larger batches and lower the cost of maple sugar. With access to this mixer, other syrup producers will be able to convert some of their maple syrup to maple sugar as well. This will allow us to get maple sugar to more customers at a lower cost than is currently available.
Why it’s important: Real maple sugar is sweeter than cane sugar yet has fewer calories and it contains vital trace minerals shown to have key health benefits. Corporate producers who make maple sugar price it out of the reach of most consumers but we would like to reduce the costs and make maple sugar available to consumers at farmers markets throughout New England and online at a lower cost than is currently available.
What we need: We are hoping to acquire funding for the maple sugar mixer and a pan to heat the maple syrup to the proper temperature. These American-made mixers are beyond our reach but with your help, we can obtain one. These are not mass produced machines and it will take a few months for the machine to be built, but once it is, we have a space for it which will allow us to get started and start producing real maple sugar for the masses fairly quickly.
About the funding: Kickstarter funding is all-or-nothing, which means if we don’t receive pledges for the full $8000, we won't get any of it. This means that your support, at any level, will have a huge impact on our ability to provide our community and region with affordable, nutritious maple sugar season after season. Words cannot thank you enough!
Portions of the funding go to Kickstarter and for the processing fees. 100% of the remaining funds go towards the purchase of the mixer and a pan to heat the syrup.
The rewards: To our backers we offer rewards of maple sugar and maple syrup as well as maple sugar cured, cob smoked bacon along with several other rewards. We invite you to learn more about us and our project by visiting some of the links and reading more about our project on this project page. You can also have the satisfaction in knowing that you are helping our farm and others continue to produce sustainable maple products!
Thank you to everyone for taking the time to look at our project and for your consideration!
Sure! If there is a similar item such as a 1/2 lb of maple sugar or a pint of syrup or a 1lb of maple sugar and a pound of maple cured, cob smoked bacon, we can exchange those. If we are successful, just let us know what you would like when we collect backer information.
