I work out in my shop a lot and so I like to remove my ring. I had taken to using my Spoke Pencil 'dock' as a ring holder, but I recently decided I should make a nicer holder… and maybe some other people might be interested in one as well. And so, the Ring Spike project started.
My first model was a basic cone shape. The cone resulted in rings of various sizes 'sitting' at significantly different heights... which I just did not like.
I ultimately iterated to a clean shape with dual tapers, so rings of various sizes would sit around the same level. I sized the part to allow for an appropriate range of rings, from the small up to the large. I decided to split the part to allow for two metals to add some cool visual interest. The base part will be aluminum, and I'll have it anodized a super matte black, which I think adds a nice stealthy look. For the top 'post' part, there is a choice between stainless steel or brass. The finished parts will be assembled together and will not come apart.
In the base, I designed a groove to accept a square profile rubber ring to provide a bit of surface grip to prevent sliding. Lastly, I decided to hand stamp the Spoke Design 'S' on the bottom to give it a bit of a 'signature'. Overall, the ring spike is 2 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide, and weighs 3 ounces.
While I like to make prototypes myself, for larger quantities, I work with a local machine shop. The shop has previously done good work for me and delivered on time.
Once I have the parts, I'll hand stamp the 'S' on the bottom of the base and then have them anodized by a local shop. I'll then assemble, pack, and ship. Overall, a pretty fun, straightforward project. With your support, I'll be able to do the project by having enough quantity to get the parts made at a reasonable cost.
I'm very comfortable running projects… I've done a few already!
Spoke Pencil … an awesome example of super cool CNC machining …
Strong Like Bull Magnets… the world's coolest refrigerator, whiteboard, locker, etc. magnets
Strong Like Bull Bottle Opener… more cool machining… big, bold, awesome...
Strong Like Bull Throw Magnets... rubber covered magnet fun!
bottleLoft… super cool, super unique… # hangbeer!
Thanks for checking out my project!
Risks and challenges
Ring Spike is a straightforward project. As detailed above, I've got good experience with Kickstarter projects, so I'm comfortable with the process. The biggest potential for issues is with timing as I rely on an outside machine shop (but I have experience with them and they do good work). However it goes, I'll keep everyone posted with regular updates along the way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
