The Growing Hope Initiative, an organization dedicated to alleviating hunger and homelessness through education and promotion of locally grown organic food, made the restoration of Grimal Grove a priority in 2011. Since their involvement began, the property has seen drastic improvements in the management of invasive plants and the restoration of the health of these rare tropical fruit trees. There are currently over 60 fruit tree species planted, supplying the local community with a dynamic educational opportunity to learn about the vast species diversity that can grow in the Florida Key’s tropical climate. This is only the beginning of the development of Grimal Grove as a epicenter of culture related to the arts, sustainability, and a thriving local community.
This kickstarter campaign will provide the Growing Hope Initiative with the funds needed to begin producing organic produce that will be made available to the local community. As the only property in the keys with agricultural zoning, this is a huge opportunity to create an organic production farm that is needed here in the keys. Your support will help build a shade house for plant propagation, provide materials for the fall and spring planting, and ensure a stipend for a local farmer to manage the food production on site. The organic food produced will be available at local grocery stores, restaurants, and markets.
Risks and challenges
There are always risks with farming. Pests, disease, storm events, and other problems are likely to arise. Fortunately, the Growing Hope Initiative, which recently purchased the property where Grimal Grove is located, is totally dedicated to their vision for this project. This dedication is what is going to ensure the long-term success of the food production program at the Grove.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
