"A fast, fun and refreshing zombie card game... I really enjoyed that. Can I play the game again?"
— Carla Hortsch, MZM Playtester
Welcome to the page of MZM, sit down and take a load off...while you still can. Earl, our fun, friendly and crazy old man will be your host, and he has everything ready for you. Use the MZM deck to run through the sewers right below your feet from the safety of your couch.
Push your luck, dodge our family friendly zombies, and find a way out of town so you can survive the horde somewhere safe. Tie or exceed each card's value to either collect or outrun your zombie friends. Play by yourself for a quick laugh in about 5 minutes, or bring in some friends to enjoy the fun with you for a 10-15 minute game.
MZM is easy to learn and even easier to play and enjoy. Are you ready to run?
UPDATE: As of April 24, we have surpassed our initial funding goal. Thank you so much to all of our backers and supporters! We literally could not have done it with out you.
Keep up the good work! At this point, we are well on our way to some terrific stretch goals! Scroll down for more details.

Now that you know the basics, Earl can... Earl? Hey, Earl! Buddy!
Okay, well, normally, he would tell you all of this himself, but he appears to have nodded off for a moment. Lovable guy, handy to have around in a pinch, but not always the smartest guy on the block, so we will continue without him for now.
Let's look at the cards and give him time to take a short nap so he can get back with us in a bit. Trust me, you want this guy to be well rested when the time comes...
The MZM team believes strongly in the power of crowdfunding. We are deeply excited to be campaigning through Kickstarter for Midnight Zombie Marathon. Our core members have collectively backed over 60 crowdfunded projects, and we are so proud of our teammate who has already run a successful Kickstarter.
We are also pleased to be Kicking It Forward by reinvesting at least 5% of MZM's campaign profits back into other creator's Kickstarter projects.
We have worked tirelessly on this game, from design and development to extensive playtesting and sourcing production. Our excitement to bring this to you is matched only by our confidence in this game. We sincerely hope you agree!
So, why crowdfund this game?
Our team has already poured heart, soul, and hundreds of dollars of our own capital to develop and promote MZM. We've got the mechanics, core concepts, art, prototypes, and more. At this point, we're ready to roll but simply can't do it without you!
Our standards for printing are necessarily high. We have designed this game to be playable time and time again and to go wherever you do on a whim, so durability and production value are essential to success. When you back MZM, that affords us the opportunity to print this game in the USA at the highest quality and get it to you in the shortest time frame possible.
We also feel that backing the game makes you part of our team, because let's face it...you've earned it! We welcome your questions, comments, and feedback throughout this project.
Thank you so much for your interest! Now, put on your running shoes, and check out our great reward tiers...
All backers at the Brains for Brains tier and above will automatically receive the additional rewards from any stretch goals unlocked during the campaign.
We are pleased to be able to offer all rewards to backers in the US, Canada, and worldwide.
The basic MZM deck will contain 31 cards* printed at premium quality with a smooth finish. The deck and rules sheet will fit into a custom-printed tuck box with thumb slot, so the entire game can travel wherever you do as easily as any standard poker deck.
We of the MZM design team are committed to quality, efficiency, and supporting local business. We are proud to say that the design and production of this game is and will continue to be 100% made in the USA.
This will ensure not only a stunning final product, but also a much shorter time between printing and shipping to our US customers, all with a lower carbon footprint while supporting American workers.
* The deck may be expanded if certain stretch goals are reached.
Alright, alright... Your good friend Earl is back and ready to explain to you how to play this fun game where I'm the star!
I'm pretty sure most of y'all have played the card game Solitaire, right? It took a long time to try to beat that game, and I think I only won the once. The rest of the times I'd just fall asleep before it was near done. It was clearly not a game for me, but MZM here is fast and easy. Way more up my alley. Or sewer, as it happens.
Let's get back to how to play this game.
- First, you want to shuffle your deck. Make sure all the zombies are in there, so there is something to run from.
- Next, grab a single 6-sided die or 6 coins, if you haven't got a die on hand. These things will be the items you use to see if you win against the card that pops up.
- You flip a card over, and...
- Look at that, you need to roll that die or flip those coins to beat a 2 or greater.
- If you beat that score, it goes into your personal pile. If you lose against it like I tend to do, it goes into a discard pile.
- Now, every so often a zombie will pop up and try to take your stuff, but as long as you beat him he or she takes nothing from you. If you lose, well, then that card goes into the discard pile and the zombie goes back into the deck.
- Yep, that's right, folks. Zombies around here never really go away. Thank goodness they're fairly kindly, as the undead go.
Here's my favorite part of the whole thing!
This game can be played by yourself or with up to 4 people, and when you bring in more people you are not limited by what is in the deck. When it's a multiplayer game, you've got to try to beat 10 rounds in total as you race through the sewers.
If you can get the most supplies from your friends in that time, you get a ride out of town with me in my sweet pickup. I got some new 8-tracks that are just begging for a listen. It's gonna be great!
Now, if all that was too many words for you (and I know how that can be), have a look at these short videos on how to play MZM:

Thanks so much to the crew at MFGCast for providing our first review and a thorough playtest of Midnight Zombie Marathon. It was certainly nice to see all the play modes broken down and to receive confirmation that the game has appeal for both adults and families.

MZM participated in a regulated, formal playtest session at GameStorm 2015, and received an average rating of 7.8 of 10 stars from our players. Here are some of the highlights from our feedback forms:
"Super quick and fun, really like the art. Good use of horde building mechanics to make the game more challenging."
"Quick, fun, [and] competitive without being stressful."
"Fun, fast paced, and easy to learn."
"I won! Zombies are awesome! =)"
We have shared some prototype games with testers, reviewers, and out at conventions, and were overwhelmed by the response. We are immensely proud of this game ourselves, but even still, we were surprised at just how well it was received and to hear some of the stories of how it's been put into play.
Some folks used this game to enjoy a little humorous diversion while waiting in a long line at a con; others report pulling it out on road trips. The number of possibilities appear endless, and we will want to hear all about it. We are looking forward to hearing your own stories of where you decide to take this game and play it, what tedium it has spared you from, and what adventures you create with it.
Risks and challenges
Team MZM is a small, dedicated group of designers who have merged their various backgrounds and skills and worked tirelessly to overcome the initial challenges in developing this game. We have put every effort into making Midnight Zombie Marathon the best game it can possibly be in its mechanics, design, and artistic quality.
The biggest challenge ahead concerns the production of a full run of this game. After serious debate (and countless quotes, samples, and prototypes), we have settled on a printer here in the USA. This is our way of supporting other American workers, and it offers several other advantages. No one else could compare in terms of combining overall quality and turnaround time. Printing in the USA also means no added cost for international shipping and delivery in a fraction of the time from the printer to us, which in turn means faster final delivery to you.
In the post-funding phase, we intend to put the finishing touches on the game, including the custom art for the highest tier backers. Our goal is to provide those backers their digital rewards and have the game printing within about a month of wrapping up the Kickstarter. We expect to have the run in our hands for QA about 4-6 weeks after it goes to press, and complete fulfillment to you 2-3 weeks after that.
Based on estimates from our printer, this leaves a safe margin of error for any minor issues, but of course, our combined experience says that delays can always happen. As backers, you are a part of our team and will be kept fully informed of all progress and any hurdles we encounter going forward.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
