3 20"x 21" CMYK silk screened prints of legendary Jazz musicians: Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker designed as a triptych.
Are you a Jazz junkie? Are you a fan of Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker and Chet Baker? Junkies? Collectible art prints? Cool French absinthe drinking cats? I love them all and have spent countless hours producing what I hope is the first in a series of limited edition prints. On certain Jazz discussion boards the title of my prints has become controversial, so please allow me to explain my intentions: I am not trying to glorify addiction---I'm lamenting it... These prints bear testament to my intentions and are a protest not for, but against junk addiction.
These 3 prints were designed as a triptych (see image below), but look great alone and are available for individual purchase.
What is a triptych and why as a triptych? According to Wikipedia,"The triptych form arises from early Christian art" and the why is that my prints are clearly meant to have religious significance. A traditional triptych might look like this:
In my prints, Charlie Parker is compared to the Buddha and the text extracted from "Mexico City Blues" is quite obviously a prayer to Charlie Parker--A prayer for forgiveness. I also put a halo behind his head to make my intentions clear. So, we have Charlie as god--Buddha-- as the center panel, flanked by the other parts of what forms a holy trinity.
Notice that both the heads of Chet Baker and Billie Holiday are at the same level, which is significantly lower than Charlie Parker's as traditionally triptychs had a larger center panel.
My intention was to take culturally iconic images and give them back, or give them, their proper iconic significance(in the true religious sense of that word), ..by framing them as strictly religious pieces.
These prints were designed to be issued as a collectible hand-signed and numbered limited edition. Only a maximum of 100 of each print will ever be printed and only 99 will be available for sale, as I really would like to keep 1 set for myself.
Why these three Jazz greats? Frankly, they are among my favorite Jazz vocalists and innovators. Each of whom eventually was to succumb to the very same demons which perhaps allowed them to reach new pinnacles in their respective forms. By carefully selecting fragments of lyrics from some of my favorite songs of theirs, and in the case of Charlie Parker, letting Jack Kerouac's famous elegy (Charlie Parker died on Kerouac's 33rd birthday), referenced here, tell the story, I think I've succeeded in visualizing the beauty and tragic dichotomy of their lives. My goal was to make the prints as musical as possible, with text and images that swirl and swing, telling the tales of their too brief lives. Look closely and listen.

After an extensive and exhaustive search for the ideal printer, I chose Continental ID out of Sparta, MI. For over 75 years, this incredible company has provided excellence and is world renowned for having printed Stephen Frykholm's Herman Miller picnic posters from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. As a company, their printing services are in high demand. Happily, they have agreed to produce these prints for me and will make their services available to get the prints out as promised. I live in California and the shipping costs alone are considerable, but I've elected to go with the best.

I already have my next series in mind--It will be called, "The Father, Son and Holy Goof" and will be another triptych of 3 of my favorite Beats: Jack Kerouac(father), Allen Ginsberg(son) and of course Neal Cassady as the holy goof. I can't wait to get started on that project, so implore everyone you know to get this funded asap.
Love and kisses,
Excalibur and Kamiblue
