The Women Bake Bread Scholarship is an alternative to expensive culinary school for low-income, immigrant women. Through Hot Bread Kitchen’s year-long, paid training program, women receive extensive training in:
Our training curriculum tackles key elements of bakery work, as well as in-demand skills for all culinary positions: speed, accuracy, safe food handling, and punctuality among them. Because communication is key for safety and success in the kitchen, each trainee is paid for their participation in two hours of English classes—tailored to the culinary workforce—each week.
As trainees move toward graduation, Hot Bread Kitchen supports trainees in their job search, connecting them with well-paid positions in the baking industry. Our graduates move on to future jobs with tangible assets, professional skills, and a food-focused network.
Unlike traditional non-profits, Hot Bread Kitchen creates its own funding stream by selling a line of multi-ethnic breads. Every loaf we bake supports women as they pursue their passion for the culinary arts. BUT, we’re still on our way to self-sufficiency; bread sales alone do not cover the significant costs of training.
We've come to Kickstarter to fund training positions for new bakers because we know that community is at the heart of what we do. Your support will ensure two talented women will be able to pursue their passion for the culinary arts and build a secure financial future for their families.

Risks and challenges
As a quickly growing start-up, we've weathered our share of challenges. The Women Bake Bread Scholarship is essential to our work; to ensure its success and the success of our training, we draw from a wide range of candidates and hold a competitive interview process each month to select the women we feel have the right mix of passion, experience, and drive.
Hot Bread Kitchen has worked tirelessly to develop best practices that guide our hiring and training and to build a team that will support our bakers from day one past graduation. We take great pride in selecting and identifying unlikely candidates for jobs in this industry.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
