 STRETCH GOALS!!!!

Hello and welcome to Floral Frolic!! We are Amanda and Cari, two collaborators on the creation of this project, and we want to create a childrens’ book that will inspire young readers to write their own words and draw their own pictures! Do you remember as a child reading books for the first time? For many of us, this first step into reading was also our first introduction to the visual arts, and it was a kind of primer that launched us into drawing stories and adventures of our own characters.

After multiple years of working in comics, we, Amanda and Cari, are returning to our basic roots, and rediscovering the passion of childrens’ books that first inspired our hands to draw.

“Floral Frolic” is an excellently illustrated young readers’ book about two foxes, Queenie and Dawnsing, who competitively pick flowers. The flowers happen to occur in synonym and antonym pairs. The book is written clean and simple with the youngest readers in mind and drawn in a lush detailed style that will inspire children to dream of rainbows and break out their crayon box or their ipad drawing ap.

We know that when we were initially learning to read, what we loved most were incredible illustrations. We spent long hours as children drawing our favorite characters; in fact, this craving to see amazing art and draw it ourselves is how we first began drawing at a very young age. We hope our story introduces children to written words while inspiring the dream of art.

Please note that pictured here is a hardcover book. This is the ideal book and will occur if the kickstarter reaches its 16,500 stretch goal. If the kickstarter meets only its bare minimum funding goal of 10,000, the book will be softcover.
Please note that pictured here is a hardcover book. This is the ideal book and will occur if the kickstarter reaches its 16,500 stretch goal. If the kickstarter meets only its bare minimum funding goal of 10,000, the book will be softcover.

Books will be 24 pages long (or 36 with an extra content section if we can reach our first stretch goal)!

Each page of the book has been a collaborative effort.  We have both worked on the writing and layouts.  Amanda has done the final drawings in pencil and then Cari has lovingly rendered them in bright, vivid watercolors.  The final pages are cute and colorful, with artwork that all ages can enjoy!

Beyond inspiring children to literacy and art making, all of which are important goals for this project, we realize that funders of this book are going to be adults who have probably already sorted out how to read!

We have made a special endeavor here to not only create a book, but to create a surrounding line of products that our fellow adults might enjoy. We have taken a lot of care and passion into creating merchandise to accompany the book. By funding this project, you not only support the book, but have a chance at getting some fun and unique items!

 ~SURPRISE TIER!~

Here is a recap of all the great rewards available!:

We can openly admit here that this is more than a book project to us. As we come back to our first love of storytelling, we’re also addressing our futures as artists. One part of our dream for this kickstarter is that it will help us fund the creation of not only the book, but this collection of high quality associated merchandise. Some of these products require sizeable minimum orders to achieve high quality items and affordable unit costs. With your help, we hope we can bring these unique and high quality items to life.  Our ability to create new work and continue making art at all is, naturally, linked directly to our ability to do things like pay rent, eat food, afford electricity ... it is our goal here to ask you to help us in our efforts to remain financially stable and able to continue creating!

Notice how there isn’t a publisher’s logo on this book? We are just two independant artists, not waiting around for someone to notice us, there isn’t any kind of page rate associated with this project, we just want to create art and print dream books!

Some of you are probably wondering "Hey, will there be fox plush!?!"  We are happy to say this is something we've been working on along with the book!  However, we are still in the prototyping phase for both foxes (as you can see in the above picture).  We would love to make the plush a stretch goal for this project, however we feel like the goal would have to be very high (at least another $2000 for one fox). These plush will be much larger than Amanda's previous plush, Angry Cat, thus the higher cost.  If this campaign does well, we will reevaluate our goals to see if this is something we can achieve.

 Amanda Coronado

I'm a freelance illustrator originally from Texas! You might recognize my work from my previous Kickstarter for Angry Cat. I'm also illustrator for the Vamplets: Nightmare Nursery graphic novels, which I have been working on for the past 3 years. I've really enjoyed all the great feedback and enthusiasm I've received from younger readers, and it has really pushed me forward into creating even more! I grew up reading from an early age and felt especially drawn to storytelling after reading children's books by Chris Van Allsburg. I went on to reading a ton of fantasy books and, eventually comics and manga. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008 with a BFA in sequential art.  I then moved onto selling my own illustrations, as well as pursuing freelance work.

Cari Corene

I grew up with my mother reading to me every night. She started with the Berenstain Bears and Angelina Ballerina. As my reading tastes advanced, I loved everything by Paul Goble. I preferred darker fairy tale type stories, especially when my mother had reservations about reading them to me. I did not start drawing until I was about 9, after my family made a long distance move. After moving, I read more books on my own than I ever had done before. In third grade, my teacher read aloud to the class at the end of every day. She picked a book called ‘Kavik the Wolf Dog’ for one reading session, it was a chapter book that happened to have occasional ink drawings in it. She photocopied the ink drawings for us to color while she read. After I finished coloring all the drawings in the book, I started drawing my own Kavik art to satisfy my coloring needs. Once I started drawing, I never stopped. When I was 13, I started wanting to watercolor paint because the Sailor Moon manga had watercolor illustrations in it. I was motivated to get my drivers’ license and pass college entrance exams at 16 so that I could go to college early, it was my only chance to take art classes because my school was very small and limited in their facilities. My community college helped funnel me towards a BFA in sequential art at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I cite childrens’ picture books and later shoujo manga for encouraging me to draw, which encouraged me to stay in school and pass classes. Without this dream to hang on to, it’s hard to think what alternative futures I might have had.

Looking to get your own book printed? This is who's handling our printing!
Looking to get your own book printed? This is who's handling our printing!

Thank you so much for having a look at our kickstarter! We really hope you've enjoyed our video, this giant stack of text, and all our lovingly prepared graphics. MAYBE you've even also enjoyed our book project and fox character themed art! So then...

Sharing our kickstarter helps us! Faving our etsy shops and items helps us! The tragedy of the internet is you can look at all this pretty art all you want. You even can buy it, that's certainly the most helpful thing! But so frequently the second most helpful thing is to spread the word about a project or artist that you like, and that second step is rarely taken.

Floral Frolic doesn't get printed unless people first SEE the project and find that they care about it. That's where a caring audience really comes in, we need your help to be SEEN. We will be sending press releases to any blog we think might write about is, we will spam our facebooks, tumblrs, deviantarts, etsies, ALL THE PLACES!  BUT we really need help getting our project in front of the right eyes. If you can tell your friends on facebook, reblog us on tumblr, share our project anywhere else you frequent online ... maybe we can all be like the little sand grains that make up a giant pretty beach. We don't expect some uber celeb to come pluck us out of obscurity, we're just looking for other little sand grains like ourselves to go make a beach with.

If you would like to spread the word about Floral Frolic, here are some banners and some social media posts we've made that you can easily reblog or maneuver wherever you want.

Risks and challenges

Floral Frolic has been a project we have been working on since the beginning of 2014. The struggle with producing fully illustrated books (or comics, as each of us has worked on previously), is that it is an extremely labor intensive process, especially lacking that previously mentioned page rate that we are not getting for this project. We both wanted to work on a children’s book project that was all around fun; not just fun for someone to read, but fun for us to make! So for going on two years now, Floral Frolic has been drawn and painted in between our freelance projects and artist alley attendances. It’s been difficult to make the time, but we very much hope that having this one successful project can help launch us, someday, into a second successful project!

As freelancers, we are always drawing for other people, working on stressful deadlines that can’t be helped. Floral Frolic has given us a chance to be free from all that, and we hope that moving forward it can give us some financial footing to stand on while we create new projects.

As of now, there are only 3 paintings remaining for be finished in the books. It is our plan that we would like to share that remaining work with our backers in exclusive updates. So often we work at our desks without really getting to share with anyone outside the studio. We would love to bring all of our supporters into our space and share our work! As for the other merchandise presented in this Kickstarter, they are already completed; all that's left to do is order them!

LET’S TALK ABOUT SHIPPING!

The art should be polished off in June and, from there, it will only take an additional 2 months to have printed books. The book printing should take one month and the shipping from the printer to us should take another. This means the book should be ready to ship by August, but we have allotted time for delays. Right now we estimate that all tiers will be shipped in October. If there are delays past this point, we will be sure to inform all backers!

You will receive your backer reward survey (if the kickstarter is successful) sometime between July and October- whenever the book finally ships from the printer.. We’ll definitely be posting updates when we send out backer surveys, and we will do our best to make sure no one misses a survey! We will be waiting to send out the survey as close to our shipping time as possible to avoid any out-of-date addresses receiving fox book shipments.

When the surveys are sent out, you will have 6 months from that date to respond with your address and other pertinent information in order to receive your reward. Beyond that 6 month window, it is hard for us to be certain that we will still have all of our kickstarter backer merchandise! We definitely don’t want to short anyone out of their reward, 6 months should be more than enough time for most of you to collect your backer survey and respond.

We know that the shipping will be time consuming and expensive, but we both have a lot of experience with shipping! Please see our etsy shops (devilsbakery.etsy.com / storyofthedoor.etsy.com) for confirmation on that experience. We are prepared for packing everything up nice and have built the involved expenses into our reward tiers.

Books will be shipped in bubble wrap, inside a narrow book mailer box. They’ll be quite safe, even to international destinations. We also know that stuff can get lost in the mail. We will be subscribing to Endicia which offers a shipping discount and tracking numbers.
