Rouss & Vamp are opposite in every way. When their path's cross, they stumble on the most amazing adventure of their tiny life !
Batz is a modern and graphic cartoon, which tells the chaotic meeting of two bats that are very different. A simple bias guides the film : even if they are freaky and weird animals , bats can still be fun, cute and kick ass!
The story of this meeting is universal. It teaches us how to overlook our differences and make them strengths.
VAMP is a small bat from a colony at the top of a rotton building. His diet is simple : mosquitoes at every meal! Except this food peculiarity, the small creature is agile, nervous and rash. She's also very selfish and openly dirty…
ROUSS is a fox bat, who lives alone in the tunnels of the subway.she is afraid of mosquitoes more than anything in the world. She's particularly attentive to her environment and to her lifestyle ; Her diet is strictly vegetarian.
+BONUS : Rouss&Vamp's interview !!!
MOUSTIK is a very juicy mosquito who rarely shows emotion. His instinct constantly urges him to look for blood. Alone , he seems harmless. Once in mosquito pack, he turns out to be really threatening...
SUBWAY is a huge moray eel, made of metal and electricity. Howling and thundering, he rushes madly at 200miles /hour into the underground of the city.
The style of animation of BATZ is a smooth mix of japanese mangas & american snappy cartoon ! Posing are efficient , timing & spacing are sharp and fast , shapes and draws are very important to us , thats why we work our animation with a sort of "nolight" mode that help animators to control their animations. Here's a short example :
About the film
Batz is a CG cartoon movie. The action takes place in an urban and underground environment, a world made of complex and disintegrated geometries.
Batz is a project that we have been dreaming about for a long time, and we love what we see : the artwork and the excitment of the animation we've seen so far give us big expectations.
The team is composed by Max Maleo and Aurélien Prédal. Max worked for Dreamworks as an animator & on Despicable Me at Mc Guff / Illumination, and Aurélien is visual development artist at Aardman and has worked on feature films such as A Monster in Paris.
Their previous work was a raw shortfilm directed during their time at Gobelins animation school ; Burning Safari:
Our goal is to raise a minimum of £16.000 for this project. We intend to finish the film by February 2013, in order to submit it for the Annecy Internationational Festival. That's our first objective, the French Mecca for animation !
Kawa Studio plans on submitting the movie to film festivals around the world. They have had a great experiences with their films Café Allongé and La Détente in the past, which gathered a large audience and were selected at Annecy and Siggraph.
Anything raised above our minimum goal will go directly into the production of Batz.
Here is how we intend to use the funds raised:
- Finish the animation and render of Batz
- Help offset the current production costs
- Manufacturing costs for backers rewards (DVD, Blu-ray,Print materials etc)
Why Kickstarter ?
The truth is, we had intended to finish Batz by ourselves... But actually we're in need for your help : we need some fuel to finish the film! The money will help with the animation and rendering, compositing and VFX, sound and actors, etc...
The other very good thing about Kickstarter is the oppportunity it gives us to spread the word about the film and gather a community of fans around it. We have high expectations of Batz, and we hope people will like what they see and will want to see more !
We want to make a high quality movie, with high standards for animation, backgrounds and designs. We hope everyone will love the project and back us up !
A Note About International Shipping Cost
We'd like to remind people pledging from outside France to please add the extra shipping cost to their pledges. That amount is indicated when needed at the end of each reward description and vary from pledge to pledge. Example: Shipping : [France add £1.00] [Europe add £2.00] [International add £3.00]
If you have already pledged from outside France, and forgot to add the extra shipping, you can correct the amount by clicking on "Manage Your Pledge".
DRM & Region Free
Our digital downloads will be DRM free and our Blu-ray and DVD's will be region free.
Risks and challenges
The production is taking place at Kawa Studio, which already produced other quality shortfilms. We are very confident that we will be able to deliver this animated film within our time estimation.
Batz is on its way for about a year now. The Kickstarter funds will be totally invested into the animation, the render and compositing, and the sound (voices+mix, sound design and music).
The issues we are expecting are mostly technical, as we'll have to deal with the rendering pipe. It's a simple pipe, as it's a shortfilm, but the special visual of the movie is requesting some special settings and method, that could give us surprises. But in the end, we're pretty confident on our ability to deliver the film on time for the Annecy Festival submission in February 2013.
Regarding the rewards, we set up delivery dates to April 2013. Once we'll have finished the movie, our energy will be focused on the goodies and DVD and all. We'd like to build a whole universe around Batz, and the rewarding process will be even more encouraging.
We already made up some raw art book, and we'll be happy to ameliorate them for the reward,a long with the t-shirt and the Art toy, to name them only.
