Help us fund Year Four!
We are Five Year Mission, a band writing and recording at least one song for every episode of the original Star Trek Series.

This album has been a long time in the making, which is unusual for us. Our past albums have come out fairly rapid fire, and before this one, the longest stretch between albums had been about a year and a half. This time around, we are about two and a half years since our last release, so we are very eager to get Year Four out into the world.
Unbelievably, the path to Year Four began about four years ago. We had just released our third full-length album, Year Three, and as is our tradition, we were drawing episodes out of a hat. Actually, this time we were drawing them out of a Gorn mask, but after all episodes were drawn and a few trades were made, we were locked in. But before we could get to those songs, we had another project in mind that we wanted to do first. That project was the Spock's Brain album.
A year and a half later we had released Spock's Brain, and we could begin in earnest on Year Four. At that point, however, we had just been hired for our most prestigious gig to date as the house band for Star Trek Las Vegas. Needless to say, we became distracted, but in a good way!
Over the course of the next couple years, we worked on Year Four songs (most of them were written already, but not really worked on), and we made slow but steady progress. Once we finally got down to recording earlier this year, we were still really busy, and we also were holding these songs to a higher standard than we had ever before. We've put a lot of time into the songs, and we think they're all the better for it. They say that perfection is the enemy of success, and that may very well be true (and would certainly explain why we've had to push our release date more than once), but we did our best to get there anyway. We hope you'll agree it was worth it.
What's left to do?
As it stands at this writing, there are still a few parts to record and mixing to do. We have a handful of songs that are practically ready to go and another handful that are REALLY close, and one that needs a whole lot of work. Our plan, though, is to have all the recording and mixing done by the end of the year, and that just leaves mastering and printing to get it done. Once we send the album off for printing, we will announce a release date and start planning a release show. As we work on this project ,we will provide frequent updates to let all of our backers know how we're doing and how much we have left to go!
Kickstarter has worked very well for us and provided us a way to fund our albums like we never would be able to otherwise. As an independent band, you just don't have a whole lot of extra money laying around, so to have access to a platform that allows us not only to pre-sell our album, but to offer rewards to do it as well is a perfect combination. We also get to do cool things that we may not have done if we just released an album without asking for help, so it's a lot of fun to use Kickstarter as well as just being a really practical way to fund our project.
But now on to the good stuff! Again, this time around many of the reward levels we're offering will be familiar. We've tried to consolidate some of the reward tiers we had last time, we've eliminated or refined some of the ones we're offering again, and we've thrown in some new cool stuff too.
A couple highlights include:
Signed Lyric Sheets - Every time we write a song, there's a lyric sheet that goes along with it. Sometimes the lyrics are originally scribbled in a notebook, and sometimes they're typed out, but however it's done, we have them for all the songs. There are a few reward tiers involved here, but each one offers the opportunity to have copies of our original lyric sheets or a piece of art created by us with our words preserved forever. It's something we've never offered before and something we really hope you'll enjoy!
5YM Bar-B-Que - Ever wanted to just chill with 5YM? Well, here's your chance. Backers at this level will come hang out with us for a friendly cookout. We'll eat, we'll drink, we'll play some tunes, and we'll just have a good time.
The Songs are Back - Once again, we're offering up our services as song writers and letting YOU choose what it is we write about. Maybe you want us to write a new song for your favorite TOS episode that we've already done a song for, or maybe you just want us to write a song about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Whatever it is, we'll write a song about it! Yes, we do reserve the right to refuse a topic, but that's mainly because we want to avoid completely absurd or inappropriate subject matter. A song about your cat would probably be borderline. Don't make us write a song about your cat!
Executive Producer - This one is really exciting, because it basically gives you a lifetime all access pass to Five Year Mission. Just take a look over there on the right!
Stretch goals are great. They give us the opportunity to shoot for a bigger target to help us keep collecting funds for more things we need, like gear and, well, mostly gear. But they also give us a way to reward all of our backers with some really cool extras.
Stretch #1 Achieved! - $3000 - Bonus Song! - Reaching this goal means that ALL of our backers will have access to an additional song inspired by one of the episodes from the album. The song will be available for download, and we'll reveal what that song is once we reach the goal.
Stretch #2 Achieved! - $4000 - Year Four Remix EP! - Yes, you can get even MORE music from us, and this time it's something we've definitely never done before. We will hand pick songs from Year Four, create dance remixes, and release a digital EP for all your partying needs.
Stretch #3 Achieved! - $5000 - Year Four Tees! - We have a brand new T-Shirt design for Year Four, and if we hit this goal, all backers who have pledged $10 or more will get one.
Stretch #4 Achieved! - $6000 - The Alternates EP! - When we're working on albums, a lot of times ideas get left on the cutting room floor, and this EP will be the first opportunity we've ever offered to hear what could have been. This digital EP will be all alternate takes on select Year Four songs that we decided for whatever reason didn't belong. Now they do.
Stretch #5 - $9000 - If we are able to get to this one, it means even more music from Five Year Mission. Hitting this goal will give every one of our backers exclusive access to "Year Four: Supplemental," an EP of completely new songs inspired by the episodes that comprise Year Four. This will be a digital EP that will be available as a free download to ALL of our Kickstarter backers. The only way this EP gets made is if we hit this goal!
But that's not all!
A lot of you have been asking us for this for a long time, and if we hit this goal, you're going to get it. That's right, it's the 2019 5YM Calendar. It may or may not also be a (probably embarrassingly hilarious) beefcake calendar. We'll be taking a survey, so we can get a good feel for what our amazing backers want. Anyone pledging up to $100 will get a digital copy of the calendar that will be suitable for printing if you so desire, and anyone at $100 or more will get an actual physical copy that we will all sign for you.
We know this is a lofty goal, and that's why we're making it worth it to get us there!

Risks and challenges
The most difficult challenge for us lies in fulfilling some of the more intangible rewards. Anything involving scheduling of several people tend to be difficult to coordinate. Songs take time to write too, so if we're writing one for you, it may be a while. We just ask that everyone is patient, and we will honor everything we promise!
As far as the CDs and Tees, we have yet to run into any problems with manufacturing or delivery, but if something does come up, we will get everything out as soon as we get it.
Throughout the fulfillment process, we'll be sure to keep everyone informed, and everyone will get what they've been promised.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
