About

Small farm food is so much tastier than factory farm food... Another Button Farm pasture raises heritage breed Tamworth pork, Freedom Ranger chickens and Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys on our 35 acres farm.

Just as the barn was originally raised by a community it will take a community to save the structure as we cannot do it alone.

Another Button Farm seeks to combine the energy of moving toward locally sourced food and knowing ones farmer with the history of Vermont's rich agricultural landscape.  Nestled in the valley of the first branch of Vermont's White River on the scenic byway of Route 110 our homestead began in 1835.  Since 2000 we have raised our three active sons in the community of Tunbridge.  We care for our children, our animals and our land while both working full time off the farm.  Life is busy, but we value being busy and working hard.  We someday hope to farm full-time.

During the winter of 2011 the snow load caused our circa 1840 hand hewn post and beam barn to sustain 5 cracked posts.  We have spent the last year working with a variety timber frame experts and our insurance company to determine the best way to fix our barn.  Our goal is to save this barn so it will not only continue to grace this picturesque landscape for the next 100 years but also function for us as a farming family and the generations that follow us.

We are fortunate to have insurance and have received a historic barn preservation grant from the State of Vermont but there is still a gap between the total amount needed for the project and those funds.  We are willing to do as much work ourselves as possible to make this happen but would love your help.

We are looking both long and short term.  We need a structure to brood our chickens and turkeys before they are old enough to go out on grass and a structure to shelter our Tamworth breeding stock for the winter.  Our sows farrow in the barn during late winter and outdoors late summer.

We could choose to utilize the insurance funds to replace our 162 year old barn with a modern structure.  We view replacement as a short-term solution.  The barn is an incredible piece of history and example of the art of timber framing.  We are reaching out to you to save this amazing structure.

PROJECT DETAILS

Timber framer's will dismantle, repair and reassemble the 40' x 70' hand hewn post and beam barn.  A local standing seam company will roof the barn.  We will reinstall original details like the hay loft ladders and shoots, the hay trolley and forks, the internal silo platform and reuse the wrought iron hinges.

We will work to empty the barn, remove current wiring, tear out Mike's existing woodworking shop, paint all new windows and doors, rebuild animal pens, coops and the woodworking shop. We will also act as a clerk of the works, coordinating all aspects of the project overseeing fundraising and pitching in anywhere possible to reduce costs.

The current concrete floor added during the 1970's is not a friend to a timber frame, as it slowly releases moisture and causes rot. The concrete would be removed and replaced with a natural base fitting the pigs need to root and explore with their snouts. The sills would be placed on a feld stone foundation and plinth stones set under each post.

COST ESTIMATES

We want to be upfront with our donors this is a large project.  We have $95,000. from insurance funds and a $15,000. barn grant from the Vermont Historic Preservation.  These funds will provide about 70% of the projects total cost.  The remaining $50,000. is too much for us to take on as a second mortgage.  The value of this barn to Vermont's working landscape is certainly worth the investment but we simply cannot do it by ourselves.

A set of two folding chairs. Mike crafts these chairs from hardwood, Anissa sews the canvas seat. Mike patterned these chairs after an old one we purchased at an estate auction. Not only are the chairs pegged and use wooden dowels to pivot but the only metal fasteners are to secure the back of the seat. (and inclusion in the time capsule)
