"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today."
From the same passionate people who brought you Black Button Distilling in 2012, Black Button Farm & Forestry is the continuation of a lifelong dream to grow the best ingredients and make the best craft spirits in New York State.
Did you know that New York State loses a family farm every three days? These farms are the foundation of our American culture: they produce the food we eat, the milk we drink, the air we breathe. Without farms, our local economy, and indeed ourselves, would be broken.
Why a Farm?
In today's next-day-delivery world, farms still take us back to a slower time. It's crazy to start a business where you have to put up the money today to invest in products that could take years to be ready for market; to make more of these long-term products, you have to hire more people and purchase more machines now, while waiting for that return on investment to pay out years down the line. We're used to that here, at Black Button, because it's the same for whiskey as it is for farming. For us, it's a calling: old school, hard work, long nights, stress about the weather, the crops, and the health of your products and your business, so often living entities of their own.
So what do we need your support for?
Well as you can imagine buying the root stock, saplings, tools and tractors can add up quite quickly. We're looking for you help to plant our first year crops of Juniper, and White Oak and to open our first bee hives. We also need to build a bridge across the stream that divides the property to we can properly farm the back acreage. Our business plan shows this should be enough to carry the farm until year three when we become self sustaining by selling what we grow to the distillery.
If we can exceed our goal we will invest that money in more trees, bees, and possibly a maple syrup operation on the same land. If we get to 70,000 dollars, we would be able to buy our tractor outright rather than renting it the first few years. This would save the farm a significant amount of money and allow us to reinvest in our farm each year much sooner. Each dollar beyond our goal will help our farm be stronger and more vibrant. None of it will be wasted.
If we raised 136,000 dollars, we would be able to plant our crops, buy the tractor, and pay off the mortgage. Raising this money would mean the farm would start life debt-free, ensuring it would be protected from future market changes.

Risks and challenges
Obviously there are risks in any business, but with this farm we have mitigated a lot of them.
First and foremost, we already have our farm's customer lined up: we are only going to be growing things needed for our current operation at Black Button Distilling.
Second, we have already secured the mortgage on the farm and calculated a payment schedule that we can afford.
Third, we will not have labor costs. Just like when Black Button Distilling began, the owner will do all of the work himself or with some volunteers if the job is too large.
Last but not least, we have time on our side. By keeping expenses low and earning a living elsewhere, this farm merely needs to be able to repay the mortgage and annual taxes to stay afloat.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
