For over thirty years, Stephen DiRado has made stunning portraits and landscape images in a remote location on the beaches of Martha's Vineyard. Now at last, a sumptuously designed and produced new book, Stephen DiRado Up-Island, will bring together the very best of these images.
In Up-Island, Stephen shares his multi-faceted, highly personal vision of his corner of Martha's Vineyard-- the remote, wind-swept, western end of the island colloquially termed 'up-island.' His images convey deep insight into the interpersonal dynamics and inner worlds of his subjects, and a singular perspective on the ever-changing, unspoiled up-island landscape.
The result: A rich book of moods and atmospheres, a Vineyard of dreams.
Stephen, a 2012 Guggenheim Fellow in photography, has chronicled a circle of artists, friends, and seekers during summer after summer. The intimacy and power of these images are enhanced by his use of black-and-white film and a large format, 8x10 inch camera.
The varied, haunting landscapes in Up-Island combine with the portraits to form a highly personal body of work, embracing a range of themes and emotions-- eroticism, solitude, connection, and loss.
Stephen is working with a leading book designer and printer in Europe to create a book which will do justice to these stunning photographs-- a beautiful object you will be happy to own and revisit for years to come. The specs: full Verona cloth hardcover, Smyth-sewn, cotton head and tail bands, 11 x 12.5", debossed well on front cover with tipped-on image (Johanna, Aquinnah, MA, September 16, 2012), duotone images.
But world-class production comes at a price-- that's where you come in. If we all help, Up-Island will become a reality.
Stephen has devoted much of his career teaching three decades' worth of students at Clark University. This is our chance to give something back-- to help him realize his first published book.
The rewards are exceptional for this exceptional project-- limited edition silver prints housed in elegant portfolio-stye boxes; signed volumes; and much more at every level of contribution.

Risks and challenges
Stephen's exquisitely detailed images deserve the best, most advanced printing and binding. Our goal is a beautiful, lasting object. We've contacted the foremost book designer and printer in Europe and they're enthused to be part of this project-- but their expertise comes at a price.
If we don't meet our funding goal, we'll receive NONE of the money pledged. It's that simple. We all need to pitch in for this book to become a reality!
Should we meet our goal with your help, sending you rewards like amazing, limited edition prints, and making this book a reality will be our first priority. And if we exceed our goal, we can print more copies of this landmark publication.
It will take creativity and a bit of time as we work with our partners in Sweden, but please be patient-- we're confident the wait will be worth it! You will be proud to support and own a remarkable book you'll be drawn to again and again.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
